New Movies Coming Out This Week: Renfield

Curious about what the new movies coming out this week are? There’s a good selection releasing at the box office this weekend.

This week we have a much-anticipated horror film starring Nicolas Cage as a famous bloodsucker! We also have a flick that sees Russell Crowe as an exorcist. Next, we have Toni Collette as an ordinary American housewife, who suddenly becomes head of an Italian Mafia crime group.

Additionally, there is a Japanese animated film about saving the world from evil forces. And there is also a documentary exploring the use of Native Americans as mascots and icons.

It’s going to be another big week at the box office!

New Movies Coming Out This Week: April 10, 2023 – April 16, 2023

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, April 14, 2023.

Summary: Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) has spent centuries doing the bidding of his master and would love to find a way out. After a chance meeting where he saves a feisty, perennially angry traffic cop (Awkwafina), he decides to find a way to escape and live an everyday life. One problem, his master is Dracula (Nicolas Cage).

What to Watch For: Nicolas Cage has said that playing Dracula is his lifelong dream. Additionally, Cage is a big fan of Christopher Lee, who became famous for playing Dracula in the Hammer films of the 60s and 70s.

Word on the Street: Director Chris McKay says that Renfield is meant to be a sequel to the 1931 classic film Tod Browning’s Dracula.

My Take: I love that the castle which appears in the film is also the castle in the 1968 film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

The Pope's Exorcist

Summary: In The Pope’s Exorcist, Father Gabriele Amorth’s (Russell Crowe) title is officially the Chief Exorcist of the Vatican. Unofficially, Father Gabriele is known as ‘The Pope’s Exorcist.’ Father Gabriele is sent to investigate a young boy’s possible possession and ends up uncovering a centuries-old conspiracy that the Vatican has tried to keep hidden for years.

What to Watch For: The film is inspired by the actual files of Father Gabriele Amorth, who was the Vatican’s Chief Exorcist.

Word on the Street: Director Julius Avery is known for his award-winning short film Jerrycan (2008) and the Fangoria Chainsaw Award nominee Overlord (2018).

My Take: This is Russell Crowe’s first horror film, so seeing what he brings to the role will be interesting.

Mafia Mamma

Mafia Mamma  (2023)

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, April 14, 2023.

Summary: Mafia Mamma is about Kristin (Toni Collette), who has a full life dealing with a son leaving for college, a horrible boss, and a husband she has recently discovered is cheating on her. To add to Kristin’s troubles, she is told that her grandfather has died. And she is requested to attend his funeral in Italy. Her friends convince Kristin to attend the funeral because what could go wrong? How about a near assignation because her grandfather has wished for Kristin, his last living descendant, to take over the family business and become a mafia boss?

What to Watch For: The film is from filmmaker Catherine Hardwicke, who directed the first Twilight film back in 2008.

Word on the Street: The film was shot on location in Italy.

My Take: One of the most famous Italian actors today, Monica Bellucci, plays Kristin’s grandfather’s trusted advisor in the film.

Summary: In Suzume, a 17-year-old girl named Suzume lives in a small, quiet town when she meets a mysterious man who tells her he needs her help to stop a series of disasters from happening across Japan. Suzume is about to go on an adventure, where the two will try to save the world from an evil force that could devastate the land.

What to Watch For: The film was nominated for the Best Film award at the 2022 Berlin International Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film is from Makoto Shinkai, whose 2016 animated award-winning film Your Name was a big worldwide hit.

My Take: I loved Makoto Shinkai’s 2019 film Weathering with You.

Imagining the Indian

Summary: Imagining the Indian is a documentary that examines the movement to eliminate the use of Native American slurs, names, logos, and images, such as the former mascot of the Cleveland Indians, Chief Wahoo, and the name of the NFL team, the Washington Redskins.

What to Watch For: The film was nominated for the Best International Documentary at the 2022 Calgary International Film Festival.

Word on the Street: Co-director of the film, Aviva Kempner, directed the award-winning 1998 film The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg.

My Take: As a sports fan, I can’t wait to see this film on a topic that has been in the news for the past few years.

Rare Objects

Summary: Rare Objects is about Benita (Julia Mayorga), who is trying to rebuild her life when she takes a job at an antique store. Benita is slowly restoring her confidence with the help of the shop’s owners until her past rears its ugly head again.

What to Watch For: Katie Holmes is not only the film’s director, but she’s also co-wrote the script.

Word on the Street: The film is based on the novel by Kathleen Tessaro.

My Take: Derek Luke and Katie Holmes worked together in the 2003 film Pieces of April and the 2022 film Alone Together that Holmes also directed.

Sweetwater

Summary: In Sweetwater, Nat ‘Sweetwater’ Clifton (Everett Osborne) is the main attraction of the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters team when Nat is asked to become the first African-American player to sign a contract with an NBA team, the New York Knicks. Sweetwater is about to change basketball forever.

What to Watch For: The stellar cast includes Cary Elwes, Eric Roberts, Robert Ri’chard, Richard Dreyfuss, Ashani Roberts, Jeremy Piven, Gary Clark Jr., and Kevin Pollak.

Word on the Street: This is Everett Osborne’s first feature film role. Osborne played professional basketball in Australia.

My Take: As a basketball fan, I can’t wait to see this film.

One of These Days

One of These Days  (2022)

Summary: One of These Days takes place in a small town in Texas, where there is an annual endurance contest on who can stand with their hand on a truck the longest. The winner will win the truck. Kyle (Joe Cole) is determined to win the truck to get his family going again after many setbacks. The contest promises thrilling entertainment for the spectators lined up to watch. But no one can expect what will happen next.

What to Watch For: The film was a nominee for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2020 Nashville Film Festival.

Word on the Street: Filmmaker Bastian Günther’s 2013 film Houston was a nominee for the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize.

My Take: Joe Cole is best known for his role as John Shelby on the TV series Peaky Blinders.
