‘John Wick 5′: Everything We Know About Keanu Reeves’ Future as John Wick

John Wick 5

With the ending of John Wick: Chapter 4, it’s understandable that a lot of fans are wondering what the future has in store for John Wick 5. Will there even be another film? What does the future hold for Keanu Reeves as John Wick?

While we know that there is no shortage of content coming from the John Wick-verse with Peacock’s The Continental series and the upcoming spin-off film Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas, Anjelica Huston, and Norman Reedus, the question still stands, will there be a John Wick 5?

With the box office success of John Wick: Chapter 4, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Joe Drake says the “will” and “openness” is there to make another film. However, he also notes that the team needs a “tiny rest.”

The Studio Is Open to John Wick 5

Despite the ending of John Wick: Chapter 4, Drake revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that, “There’s a will and there’s an openness. And you could certainly interpret that ending in different ways.”

“We’re all going to take a tiny rest here and then scratch at ideas about whether there’s a credible way to get into five. But there’s no guarantee.”

Drake also alluded that John Wick 5 might end up being a prequel.

“You could certainly go earlier (with the story.)” Drake notes.

“Keanu and Chad, rightly so, are very protective about never screwing with the audience,” he continued, noting that director Chad Stahelski doesn’t want the film franchise to overstay its welcome.

“So we certainly have our work cut out for us… Keanu is so beloved and that character is so beloved; that’s not lost on him,” he added.

Of course, the box office success of the current film, which has already surpassed $244.8 million globally, has resulted in Chad Stahelski being asked about a potential fifth film as well.

Chad Stahelski Is Confident that John Wick 5 Will Happen If They Have the Right Idea

Stahelski, 54, admits that he’s flattered by the positive reaction that fans are having to the fourth installment. And furthermore, he’s confident that another movie will happen if the right idea is found.

“It’s very flattering for them to come back. And, you know, say ‘We want more’ and it’s not just a cash grab. It’s legitimately the audience wants more,” Stahelski said during his appearance on the Hollywood Reporter’s Behind the Screen podcast.

“I think we all need that little bit of time to go, ‘Whew. Let’s see what’s next.’ If Keanu (Reeves) and I, a few months from now sit down at a whiskey bar in Japan again and go, ‘Yep, we’ll never do another one of those.’ And then all of a sudden go, ‘Yeah. But I got an idea.’ We’re open to it.”

John Wick 4 and John Wick 5 Were Originally Planned to Film Back-to-Back

Previously, Stahelski had alluded to John Wick: Chapter 4 being the final film in the franchise. Even though initially, John Wick 4 and John Wick 5 were planned to film back-to-back. However, that plan was scrapped once the ending of the fourth film was decided upon.

“In our minds, Keanu and I are done for the moment. We’re going to give ‘John Wick’ a rest. I’m sure the studio has a plan. If everyone loves it and goes kooky, then we’ll take a quiet minute.” he stated.

While the fourth film may have been planned as the finale, the worldwide box office is keeping the dream alive for the studio and the fans. With over $122 million made domestically, the film is now heading into its third week in theaters. However, it did fall to the second spot in terms of domestic gross during its second week of release as Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves outperformed initial expectations for its opening weekend.

Franchise producer Basil Iwanyk has also teased that the film’s crew was willing to make another film. Though he also noted that the rather ambiguous ending to John Wick: Chapter 4 could be a great way to wrap up the story.

“Just on a personal level, we can’t break up the band yet. If the movie does really well, and people love it, and if there’s a germ of the idea, we’ll entertain it,” Iwanyk told IndieWire. “We’re so far away from that. I’m not saying there will be a sequel by any stretch. But if there is a world where we can find a story, we’ll explore that.”
