Rami Malek’s Thriller ‘Amateur’ Filming Underway in London

Rami Malek gets ready to start production on Amateur

Rami Malek is no stranger to spy thrillers. And he’s returning to the genre in yet another flick in the genre with the upcoming movie, Amateur.

It was announced that Malek, 41, best known for his role in Mr. Robot, had signed onto the project not long after the project’s last major development update on IMDb in February, which noted Amateur as being in the “Optioned” status of development. And as of June 5th, despite the writers’ strike, the project began filming in the U.K., with additional filming planned for France and Turkey

Slow Horses‘ James Hawes is directing the movie, which is authored by Gary Spinelli, with Hutch Parker and Dan Wilson producing.

Filming is expected to continue until September. And if no rewrites are needed, then the writers’ strike shouldn’t impact the project. Though, if there is an actors’ strike at the end of June, that could affect the production time.

Amateur production is currently operating under the code name “THE DEFECTION”.

The Storyline of Amateur

Amateur will follow Charlie Heller, who is an ace cryptographer. Used to working mostly in the back offices at the CIA, he’s described as a quiet man with a quiet job. However, when terrorists shoot his fiancee in cold blood, Charlie learns that the agency isn’t planning to pursue those responsible. And that’s when his life takes an abrupt turn.

Being a blackmailer wasn’t on Charlie’s resume. But Charlie has no choice but to force the CIA’s hand. His goal? Penetrate the Iron Curtain with the intent to kill. Driven by an obsessive need for revenge, targeted for elimination by the CIA itself, Charlie is an amateur with a one-in-a-million chance of success.

Rami Malek’s Upcoming Projects

Rami Malek last starred in 2022’s Amsterdam and 2021’s No Time To Die. The latter was much more successful in terms of ticket sales, grossing over $774 million globally against its $250 million budget. Unfortunately, despite no shortage of hype, Amsterdam ended up flopping at the box office, only grossing $31 million against its $80 million budget.

Fans can catch Malek next in this summer’s Oppenheimer, opposite Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., and Cillian Muphy. At this time, Malek isn’t attached to any additional projects.

Additional Details on Amateur

Additional cast has been announced for the film, including Outlander‘s Caitríona Balfe, Adrian Martinez, Rachel Brosnahan, Laurence Fishburne, Holt McCallany, and Julianne Nicholson.

Filming is expected to continue through September 2023. No word yet on when the movie will release. But it would likely be mid-to-late 2024 at the earliest.

    1. Nothing yet. I get production updates every Wednesday for what’s filming, about to film, or in early active development – so I’ll keep an eye out for it and update this as soon as I see something.

I did double-check a few sources as well – They’ve not updated the planned release date of November 8, 2024, yet – and they were initially scheduled to film from June 2 through September – so they probably made it to around halfway point before the SAG-AFTRA strike. So, if they’re still aiming for a release next fall, they should be going back into production super soon. I wouldn’t be surprised if it were sometime in January though, due to the holidays.
