‘Jurassic World 4’: The New Era of ‘Jurassic Park’ Films to Start Summer 2025
Following Jurassic World: Dominion, yet another installment is in the works with Jurassic World 4. The upcoming movie is said to be a reboot of the entire franchise, meaning a new slate of characters and a new story is in the works.
A lot of details about Jurassic World 4 are still scarce, leaving room for speculation as to what the film will be about and who will star in it. Here’s what we know so far about Jurassic World 4.
Jurassic World 4 in the Works
The fourth installment of the Jurassic World movies is coming to the screens in 2025. Jurassic World 4 is the franchise’s latest movie based on Michael Crichton’s novel. The franchise started in 1993, with Jurassic Park, followed by The Lost World in 1997 and Jurassic Park III in 2001. More than a decade later, Universal revived the franchise with Jurassic World in 2015, Fallen Kingdom in 2018, and Dominion in 2022.
The announcement of a fourth movie comes despite Jurassic World: Dominion seemingly concluding the sequel trilogy. It brought together the arcs from the new movies while bringing back the main characters of the original films.
Another thing to note is that Jurassic World 4 would be seen as a hard reboot of the franchise. David Koepp is writing the screenplay, with Gareth Edwards said to direct. Edwards coming aboard the project follows the departure of David Leitch, who originally was to helm the movie.
Steven Spielberg will return to executive produce the reboot for Amblin Entertainment. Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley, who oversaw the original films, will serve as producers. Leitch and Kelly McCormick will also be producing for 87North. Sara Scott and Jacqueline Garell will be overseeing Jurassic World 4 for Universal.
Jurassic World 4 Plot
No word yet on what Jurassic World 4 will be about, only that it will serve as a hard reboot. With Koepp, who wrote the screenplays for the 1993 and 1997 Jurassic Park films, writing this one, it might go back to its roots as a brand new story.
In the 1993 film, the story centered around genetically-engineered dinosaurs that were brought back to life through cloning technology. The reanimated dinosaurs became attractions in theme parks and islands.
Speaking with Collider, Edwards, known for directing Rogue One and The Creator, revealed that he immediately took the chance to direct.
“I was about to take a break and I started writing my next idea for a film and this is the only movie that would make me drop everything like a stone and dive right in. I love Jurassic Park, I think the first movie is a cinematic masterpiece. So this opportunity is like a dream to me. And to work with Frank Marshall and Universal and David Koepp, who’s writing the script, I think they’re all legends. So I’m just very excited,” said Edwards.
Cast
For Jurassic World 4, the latest cast announcement has revealed that Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, famed for his performance in The Lincoln Lawyer, will star in the film. As reported by Deadline, Garcia-Rulfo will feature alongside Scarlett Johansson of Marvel fame and Jonathan Bailey from Bridgerton in the new installment of the Jurassic Park series.
It remains unclear what roles Garcia-Rulfo, Bailey, and Johansson will have in the upcoming movie. They follow Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, who led the sequel trilogy. This follows the confirmation that several of the original cast of the previous movies will not return to the franchise.
What to Expect
As said earlier, the details for Jurassic World 4 remain scarce, so anything is still possible. Because the fourth movie will serve as a reboot, it will be a brand new story to tell audiences.
Since the first Jurassic Park film premiered in 1993, it has brought in over $6 billion in the box office worldwide. Over the years, several cast members have reprised their roles in the movies that followed. Notably, in Jurassic World: Dominion, Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum joined Pratt and Howard in what would be the end of the franchise. At least Pratt has said it would be.
“I can say that it was incredible to be back together,” Dern told PEOPLE in May 2022. “It was an amazing thing to join my original cast members and go down memory lane, from that experience in the beginning of a franchise through the whole course of these films together with all the key cast members who have been working on these movies, as well as Colin Trevorrow and Steven Spielberg, who is like family to me.”
During an appearance in the Today Show in May 2022, Pratt told the hosts that Dominion served as the sixth film and the final one.
“This is the sixth Jurassic film. And it’s the end of this franchise,” said Pratt at the time, before being pressed if it was really the end. “I really do think it’s the end yeah. You’ve got the legacy cast back — Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum – plus the cast of Jurassic World. All our storylines converging in a way that is very much a finale.”
Jurassic World 4 Release Date
Jurassic World 4 is set to premiere on July 2, 2025, a year and a half after Universal confirmed a fourth film. Filming is expected to start on June 17, 2024. Production will take place in the United Kingdom and Thailand under the working title “Saga.”
However, it remains to be seen if the movie will stick to that time frame of filming. With the film having a director, writer, and producers already on board, it won’t be long before more details come out.
