First up is Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which brings Furiosa’s origin story to life, with Anya Taylor-Joy playing the title character. Next, there’s The Garfield Movie, where we get to see that fat cat, voiced by Chris Pratt, who loves lasagna more than anything.
And lastly, we get Glen Powell as a professor who moonlights as a hitman for hire, working for the local police department to catch bad guys in Hit Man.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: May 20, 2024, – May 26, 2024
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)
Rating: R
Release Date: In theaters nationwide on Friday, May 24, 2024.
Summary: In Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, as the world falls, a biker horde led by the warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) takes a young Furiosa. Years later, Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) tries to escape and find her way home as two tyrants wage a war.
What to Watch For: From filmmaker George Miller, this is the origin story of Furiosa, who Charlize Theron played in the 2015 film Mad Max: Fury Road.
Word on the Street: All the Mad Max films have been shot in George Miller’s native land of Australia, except Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), which was shot in the Namib Desert, Namibia. This was due to floods in Australia, making its desert transform into lush green areas.
My Take: I find it funny that Anya Taylor-Joy doesn’t have a driver’s license but had to perform a driving stunt on one of her days of shooting the film.
The Garfield Movie (2024)
Rating: PG
Release Date: In theaters on Friday, May 24, 2024.
Summary: The Garfield Movie starts when Jon (voiced by Nicholas Hoult) rescues Garfield (Chris Pratt) after finding the cat abandoned in a restaurant. Now grown, Garfield has a sudden reunion with his long-lost father, an alley cat named Vic (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson). Now Garfield and his dog pal Odie (voiced by Harvey Guillen) are forced from their perfectly pampered life into joining Vic in a high-stakes heist.
What to Watch For: The film will be released in May to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first live-action film, Garfield: The Movie (2004), and the 40th anniversary of the TV special, Garfield in the Rough (1984).
Word on the Street: Be sure to be on the lookout for Lorenzo’s Music Store during the film. It’s a tribute to the late Lorenzo Music, Garfield’s original voice in the TV series and commercials.
My Take: Mark Dindal, known for his movies The Emperor’s New Groove (2000) and Chicken Little (2005) directs the film.
Atlas (2024)
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, May 24, 2024.
Summary: Atlas is about Atlas Shepard (Jennifer Lopez), a data analyst who deeply mistrusts AI technology, even though her father is responsible for creating the technology that gave AI robots their power. Atlas decides to join an anti-terrorist mission to stop an AI from destroying Earth. After an attack, Atlas is marooned on a planet, and her only ally is an AI robot named Smith. Together, they will have to succeed, or the Earth is doomed.
What to Watch For: The cast includes Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction), Mark Strong (Tar), and Gregory James Cohan (Bull).
Word on the Street: The film is directed by Brad Peyton, known for his movies San Andreas (2015), Incarnate (2016), and Rampage (2018).
My Take: It will be interesting to see if this film is as big a hit for Netflix as Lopez’s 2023 film The Mother, which broke streaming records.
Sight (2023)
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: In theaters on Friday, May 24, 2024.
Summary: In Sight, Ming Wang (Terry Chen) grew up in China during the Cultural Revolution. He escaped from Communist China to become a pioneering eye surgeon in America. When a blind orphan arrives in his waiting room, Ming must confront his past trauma of living through that violent uprising of his youth to try to restore the child’s sight.
What to Watch For: The film is based on Dr. Ming Wang’s autobiography, “From Darkness to Sight.”
Word on the Street: The film is from Angel Studios known for their movies Cabrini (2024) and Sound of Freedom (2023).
My Take: The cast includes Emmy-winner Fionnula Flanagan and Oscar-nominated Greg Kinnear.
Hit Man (2023)
Rating: R
Release Date: In select theaters on Friday, May 24, 2024, and on Netflix on Friday, June 7, 2024.
Summary: Hit Man is about Gary (Glen Powell), who is your typical, boring philosophy professor with two cats. Except, Gary has a side job, he poses as a hit man for the New Orleans police department and he is good at catching criminals who want someone dead. Things are going great until he meets Madison (Adria Arjona), who wants to hire him to kill her husband. Two problems: Gary is falling for Madison, and her husband just turned up dead.
What to Watch For: The film was written by Glen Powell and was co-written by his director, Richard Linklater.
Word on the Street: This is the fourth film that Powell has worked on with the five-time Oscar-nominated Linklater.
My Take: I love that the film is based on a true story, and Powell brought the idea of the film to Linklater.
