A Look at the 8 New Movies Coming Out This Week: ‘The Watchers,’ ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die,’ and More!

First up, M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter, Ishana, is following in her father’s footsteps. She brings us the horror film The Watchers starring Dakota Fanning. And Will Smith and Martin Lawerence are back on the streets of Miami in Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

Next up, we also get Dakota Johnson playing a woman trying to find herself in Am I OK?, and Karen Gillian playing a 28-year-old loser who becomes a caretaker for an elderly woman in Late Bloomers.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: June 3, 2024, – June 9, 2024

The Watchers  (2024)

Rating:  PG-13

Release Date:  In theaters nationwide on Friday, June 7, 2024. 

Summary: The Watchers starts when Mina’s (Dakota Fanning) car breaks down while she is traveling on a forest road. Taking off on foot, she suddenly sees a woman yelling at her to run to a concrete bunker. Mina makes it before the bunker’s door closes, and she finds herself in another world where creatures observe their captive humans and terrible things happen when people don’t reach the bunker in time. 

What to Watch For: The writer/director of the film, Ishana Shyamalan, is the daughter of M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Signs). The Watchers is Ishana’s directorial debut.

Word on the Street: The film is based on A.M. Shine’s best-selling book of the same name.

My Take: I always forget that Dakota Fanning played Jane in The Twilight Saga film series.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die   (2024)

Rating:  R

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, June 7, 2024. 

Summary: In Bad Boys: Ride or Die, the bad boys (Will Smith and Martin Lawrence) are back and in trouble. The late Captain Conrad Howard is being accused of being on the take with the Romanian Mafia. The guys set out to exonerate the late captain but get set up themselves, and now, as fugitives, they will have to work outside the law to solve the case.

What to Watch For: The cast includes actors from past Bad Boys films, including Vanessa Hudgens, Paola Núñez, John Salley, Alexander Ludwig, and DJ Khaled.

Word on the Street: Directors of the last Bad Boys movie, Bad Boys for Life (2020), Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, have returned to helm this movie.

My Take: I will miss Joe Pantoliano as Capt. Conrad Howard, though I know he makes an appearance in the movie in a video sent to the guys after the captain’s death. 

Am I OK?  (2022)

Rating: R

Release Date: Premiering on Max on Thursday, June 6, 2024.

Summary:  Am I OK? is about Lucy (Dakota Johnson) and Jane (Sonoya Mizuno), who are lifelong friends, even though Lucy is a mess. Things change when Jane announces she is moving to London, leading Lucy to reveal a secret about herself. 

What to Watch For: The film is directed by Stephanie Allynne and Tig Notaro. Allynne directed Tig Notaro’s standup special Tig Notaro: Hello Again. The two are married. 

Word on the Street: The film is based on screenwriter Lauren Pomerantz’s real-life experiences of coming out as gay when in her 30s.

My Take: The film made its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and has a cast that includes Jermaine Fowler, Kiersey Clemons, Sean Hayes, Molly Gordon, and Tig Notaro.

Late Bloomers   (2023)

Rating:  N/A

Release Date:  In theaters and On Demand on Friday, June 7, 2024.

Summary: Late Bloomers is about Louise (Karen Gillan), a 28-year-old woman who is recently single again, in need of a job, and depressed. When she drunkenly falls while doing something stupid, Louise breaks her hip and finds herself in a physical therapy ward full of people twice her age. There, she meets Antonina (Małgorzata Zajączkowska), a cranky elderly Polish woman who doesn’t speak English. Somehow, Louise gets a job as a caretaker for Antonina, and it just might be time for her to grow up with Antonina’s help.

What to Watch For: The movie did wonderfully on the film festival circuit, winning the Independent Visions Award at the 2023 Sarasota Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The movie is Lisa Steen’s feature film directorial debut. Steen is the award-winning filmmaker of the shorts Stepdaddy and Sundowners.

My Take: Although most people will know Karen Gillian from her roles as Nebula in The Guardians of the Galaxy and Ruby in the Jumanji series, I will always know her as Amy Pond from Doctor Who.

Solo  (2023)

Rating:  N/A

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, June 7, 2024.

Summary: In Solo, Simon (Théodore Pellerin) is a rising star in Montreal’s drag scene performing at a local club. Simon’s world changes when he meets Oliver (Félix Maritaud), a new performer at the club, and there are instant sparks between them. But Oliver doesn’t want to share the spotlight, and Oliver’s destructive behavior jeopardizes Simon’s spotlight. 

What to Watch For: The film won the Best Canadian Feature Film at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. 

Word on the Street: The film is from filmmaker Sophie Dupuis, who directed the award-winning films Underground (2020) and Family First (2018).

My Take: Théodore Pellerin played Beau’s son in last year’s film Beau Is Afraid.

I Used to Be Funny  (2023)

Rating:  N/A

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, June 7, 2024.

Summary: I Used to Be Funny is about Sam (Rachel Sennott), an aspiring standup comedian and sometimes nanny who struggles with PTSD and depression. Sam sets up to find Brooke (Olga Petsa), a troubled teen she used to nanny who is missing. 

What to Watch For: The film played at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Grand Jury Award.

Word on the Street: This is the feature film debut of director/writer Ally Pankiw. Pankiw was a story editor on the TV series Schitt’s Creek and has directed TV series such as Black Mirror and The Great.

My Take: Rachel Sennott blew people away with her award-winning performance in the 2021 hit film Shiva Baby.

How to Rob a Bank  (2024)

Rating:  N/A

Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

Summary: In the documentary How to Rob a Bank, a bank robber nicknamed Hollywood was the most prolific bank robber in the 1990s. His robberies were straight out of the movies. However, everything must end, and it all comes crashing down in one spectacular final heist.

What to Watch For: Hollywood was a meth dealer until he saw the movie Point Break and decided then to rob banks.

Word on the Street: The film is directed by Stephen Robert Morse (EuroTrump (2017) and Seth Porges (Class Action Park (2020)).

My Take: I still tell people about Porges’s off-the-wall nuts documentary Class Action Park. 

Kidnapped: The Abduction of Edgardo Mortara  (2023)

Rating:  N/A

Release Date:  In select theaters on Friday, June 7, 2024.

Summary: Kidnapped: The Abduction of Edgardo Mortara tells the story of, in 1858, a young Jewish boy living in Italy who was forcibly taken from his family by the Catholic Church and was baptized. His parent’s struggle to free their son became a part of a larger political battle that shocked the world. 

What to Watch For: The film is based on a true story.

Word on the Street: The film has won over fifteen awards, including winning Best Film from the Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists.

My Take: I know that Steven Spielberg once wanted to make a film based on this story.
