A Look at the 10 New Movies Coming Out This Week: ‘Fly Me to The Moon,’ ‘Longlegs,’ and More!

Curious about the new movies are coming out this week? We have a full list of new releases along with their trailers below! 

First up, we’re traveling back in time to the late ‘60s when the man in charge of getting a rocket to the moon (played by Channing Tatum) meets an advertising executive (played by Scarlett Johansson), who joins the team to create publicity for the moon launch in Fly Me to the Moon.

We also get a horror film about a new FBI agent (Maika Monroe) trying to catch a serial killer who is connected to the occult in Longlegs. Plus, Sing Sing is a film based on the true story of a group of prisoners who perform in a very unconventional theater group. 

Below is the full list of all the new movies coming out this week in theaters and streaming!

New Movies Coming Out This Week: July 8, 2024 – July 14, 2024

Fly Me to the Moon   (2024)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date:  In theaters nationwide on Friday, July 12, 2024. 

Summary: Fly Me to the Moon occurs before the first lunar landing. NASA has been having a rough couple of years with its attempts to reach the moon. Due to failed tests, successes by the Soviet Union, and a launch pad disaster that resulted in the death of three astronauts, NASA is in danger of losing its funding. The White House has hired marketing maven Kelly Jones (Scarlett Johansson) to come in and get the public behind the U.S.A.’s race to the moon. With her constant demands and interference, Kelly has made the job of strait-laced launch director Cole Davis (Channing Tatum) even more difficult. Little does Cole know that Kelly has an even bigger task: to stage a fake moon landing as a backup.

What to Watch For: The cast includes Woody Harrelson as a mysterious government official behind Kelly’s hiring, Jim Rash as an TV advertising director with his sights set on Hollywood, Ray Romano as Cole’s right-hand man, and Anna Garcia as Kelly’s assistant and partner in crime.

Word on the Street: The production was able to film an actual launch while filming at Cape Canaveral.

My Take: While Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum have appeared together in two films (Don Jon (2013) and Hail, Caesar! (2016)), this is the first time they have appeared together on screen.

Longlegs  (2024)

Rating: R

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, July 12, 2024.

Summary:  In Longlegs, FBI Agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) is a gifted new recruit assigned to an unsolved case involving a serial killer and the occult. Agent Harker discovers she has a personal connection to the killer and must stop him before he strikes again.

What to Watch For:  The cast includes Nicolas Cage, Blair Underwood, and Alicia Witt.

Word on the Street: Test audiences have compared the film to Zodiac (2007), Se7en (1995), and Silence of the Lambs (1991). 

My Take: Neon, the studio of the film, has created a phone number, 458-666-4355, which you can listen to an alarming message from the killer in the film.

Touch  (2024)

Rating: R

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, July 12, 2024.

Summary: Touch spans decades and several continents as Kristopher (Egill Ólafsson) has been told he is running out of time. And he sets off to find his one true love, who disappeared over 50 years ago. 

What to Watch For: The film is based on the international bestselling book of the same name by Ólafur Jóhann Ólafsson.

Word on the Street: The movie is from filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur, known for his award-winning films The Deep (2013) and The Oath (2017).

My Take: Baltasar Kormákur directed the 2022 film Beast, which starred Idris Elba as a father protecting his two daughters from a rogue African lion.

Sing Sing   (2023)

Rating:  R

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, July 12, 2024.

Summary: In Sing Sing, Devine G (Colman Domingo), a man in jail for a crime he did not commit, survives by acting in a theater group with other inmates. 

What to Watch For: The film won the audience award at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival.

Word on the Street: Most of the cast is composed of former inmates who were part of the theater troupe the film is based on. 

My Take: The film is based on John H. Richardson’s 2005 Esquire article, ‘The Sing-Sing Follies. ‘

Tyler Perry’s Divorce in the Black   (2024)

Rating: R

Release Date: Premiering on Amazon Prime on Thursday, July 11, 2024. 

Summary: Tyler Perry’s Divorce in the Black is about Ava (Meagan Good), an up-and-coming bank professional who is devastated when her husband, Dallas (Cory Hardrict), leaves their marriage. Ava is determined to fight for her marriage until fate intervenes and she learns the truth, a truth about a long-lost love.

What to Watch For: The film is written and directed by Tyler Perry. Perry’s last two directorial efforts were Mea Culpa (2024) and A Jazzman’s Blues (2022).

Word on the Street: Star Meagan Good and Tyler Perry are credited as producers of the film.

My Take: I remember Meagan Good’s outstanding performance as Cisely, Eve’s sister, in the 1997 film Eve’s Bayou.

Lumina  (2024) 

Rating: R

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, July 12, 2024.

Summary: Lumina starts when Alex’s girlfriend, Tatiana (Eleanor Williams), disappears under mysterious circumstances. Alex (Rupert Lazarus) and his friends embark on a quest to find her. Their journey takes them to an underground military base, which holds a secret that could cost them their lives.

What to Watch For: The film was shot in Morocco, the first science fiction feature film ever done there.

Word on the Street: This is the first feature film for director Gino McKoy.

My Take: The movie was shot during the COVID crisis and had numerous problems it had to solve for the film to be completed.

National Anthem   (2023)

Rating: R

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, July 12, 2024.

Summary: In National Anthem, Dylan (Charlie Plummer) is a 21-year-old construction worker in New Mexico when he finds himself working on a ranch with a community of queer rodeo performers. Dylan is about to meet someone, Sky (Eve Lindley), who will change his life forever.

What to Watch For: The film was nominated for the 2023 SXSW Film Festival Audience Award.

Word on the Street: Eve Lindley is best known for her role in the TV series Dispatches from Elsewhere as Simone.

My Take: I loved Charlie Plummer’s performance, as John Paul Getty III in the Ridley Scott film All the Money in the World (2017).

Sorry/Not Sorry   (2023)

Rating: N/A

Release Date:  In theaters and On Demand on Friday, July 12, 2024

Summary: Sorry/Not Sorry is a documentary about comedian Louis C.K., accused of sexual harassment in 2017. The film investigates his comeback and how it impacted the women who spoke out about his behavior publicly.

What to Watch For: Co-director Caroline Suh directed the Netflix documentary Blackpink: Light Up the Sky.

Word on the Street: The movie was part of a film series about ‘cancel culture’ at the 2024 Glasgow Film Festival.

My Take: One of the accusers in the film is Jen Kirkman, a comedian I am a fan of.

Descendants: The Rise of Red  (2024)

Rating: TV-G

Release Date: Premiering on Disney+ on Friday, July 12, 2024. 

Summary: Descendants: The Rise of Red follows Red (Kylie Cantrall), daughter of the Queen of Hearts, and Chloe (Malia Baker), daughter of Cinderella, as they travel back in time using the White Rabbit’s pocket watch to stop an event that could have grave consequences if they fail.

What to Watch For: The film reunites Brandy Norwood and Paolo Montalban as they reprise their roles as Cinderella and King Charming from the 1997 TV movie Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella.

Word on the Street: The film was teased at the end of the 2021 film Descendants: The Royal Wedding.

My Take: This is the fourth film in the Descendants series.

Dandelion  (2024)

Rating: R

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, July 12, 2024.

Summary:  Dandelion (KiKi Layne) is a singer-songwriter whose career is filled with small venues and even smaller towns. Desperate for a gig, she takes a job at a motorcycle rally in South Dakota. It’s there she meets Casey (Thomas Doherty), a guitarist who left his dreams of stardom long ago. Casey will ignite something in Dandelion that she thought was long forgotten.

What to Watch For: The music for the film was written by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of the band The National.

Word on the Street: The movie is from filmmaker Nicole Riegel, known for her 2021 award-winning film Holler.

My Take: I loved KiKi Layne’s performance in the 2018 film If Beale Street Could Talk.
