A Look at the 7 New Movies Coming Out This Week: ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ ‘Cirque du Soleil: Without a Net,’ and More!

Just when we thought we never would see Hugh Jackman extend those giant claws as Wolverine, he’s back, and Deadpool has him in Deadpool & Wolverine. The MCU may never be the same again.

In the documentary Cirque du Soleil: Without a Net, we see the ultimate circus act, Cirque du Soleil, come back after shutting down for 400 days because of the Covid outbreak. We witness the preparation process of these talented performers as they create the show that has enthralled audiences worldwide. 

And we have four legendary actors, Susan Sarandon, Megan Mullally, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Bette Midler, who get together for a wedding full of laughs and highjacks in The Fabulous Four.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: July 22, 2024 – July 28, 2024

Deadpool & Wolverine

Deadpool & Wolverine   (2024)

Rating:  R

Release Date:  In theaters nationwide on Friday, July 26, 2024. 

Summary: In Deadpool & Wolverine, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) is recovering from some serious injuries when he comes across someone he really doesn’t like, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds). After trying to kill each other, the two frenemies team up to defeat a common enemy.

What to Watch For: This is the 10th time that Hugh Jackman has portrayed Wolverine/Logan in films, but this is the first time Wolverine has worn the yellow and blue uniform. 

Word on the Street:  This is the only MCU movie that will be released in 2024, making it the first time since 2012 when The Avengers was released.

My Take: I hear that some really cool superheroes from the past will appear on the screen in this movie.

Cirque du Soleil: Without a Net

Cirque du Soleil: Without a Net   (2023)

Rating:  PG-13

Release Date:  Premiering on Prime Video on Thursday, July 25, 2024. 

Summary: In the documentary Cirque du Soleil: Without a Net, the company, after shutting down and declaring bankruptcy due to the worldwide Covid outbreak, moves to reboot its flagship production O. The film documents the struggle of both performers and crew members as they work to return to their world-class standards in time for an opening night.

What to Watch:   Cirque du Soleil gave the film crew unprecedented access to the behind-the-scenes preparation, unlike any of their previous theatrical releases. 

Word on the Street: The movie is from filmmaker Dawn Porter, known for award-winning documentaries Gideon’s Army (2014), Trapped (2016), and Philly D.A. (2022).

My Take: I am a huge Cirque fan, and I see the touring shows every time they come to Atlanta, so I can’t wait to see what happens behind the scenes.

Didi

Didi    (2024)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, July 26, 2024.

Summary: Didi takes place in 2008, during the last month of summer before he starts high school, Chris (Izaac Wang), a thirteen-year-old at the horror of his mother (Joan Chen), is constantly shooting videos and trying to make friends instead of studying. He is a typical American boy, learning to be a teenager while trying not to disappoint his Taiwanese family.

What to Watch For: The film won two awards at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, including the Audience Award.

Word on the Street: Other than cast members Izaac Wang (Good Boys, Raya and the Last Dragon) and Joan Chen (The Last Emperor, Twin Peaks), the cast comprised first-time actors from the Bay-area.

My Take: With over 35 film critic reviews, the movie is at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Fabulous Four

The Fabulous Four   (2024)

Rating:  R

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, July 26, 2024.

Summary:  The Fabulous Four is about three lifelong friends (Susan Sarandon, Megan Mullally, Sheryl Lee Ralph) who travel to Key West, Fla., to be bridesmaids in a surprise wedding of their college girlfriend Marilyn (Bette Midler). Sisterhood will be rekindled, wine will be drunk, and maybe even a bit of romance will happen (if they’re lucky).

What to Watch For: The film is from award-winning filmmaker Jocelyn Moorhouse, known for her movies How to Make an American Quilt (1995), A Thousand Acres (1997) and The Dressmaker (2015).

Word on the Street: Sheryl Lee Ralph replaced Sissy Spacek before production began because of a scheduling conflict.

My Take: The film was shot in the Savannah, GA. area, one of my favorite places to visit. 

Made in England: The Films of Powell & Pressburger

Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger   (2024)

Rating:  N/A

Release Date: In select theaters on Friday, July 26, 2024.

Summary: Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger is a documentary that chronicles the British cinematic partnership of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, known as The Archers. Between 1939 and 1972, the duo created 24 award-winning films, including Black Narcissus (1947), The Red Shoes (1948) and The Elusive Pimpernel (1950).

What to Watch For: Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese narrates the film.

Word on the Street: The film features rare archival material from Powell, Pressburger, and Scorsese’s personal collections, including never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage.

My Take: I am a massive fan of The Archers, and I Know Where I’m Going! (1945) is one of my favorite films of theirs.

Mothers' Instinct

Mothers’ Instinct  (2024)

Rating:  R

Release Date: In select theaters on Friday, July 26, 2024, and on Digital on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.

Summary:  In Mothers’ Instinct, Alice (Jessica Chastain) and Celine (Anne Hathaway) are best friends, living their perfect lives with their husbands and sons of the same age. A tragic accident causes their friendship to be suddenly shattered. The combination of guilt, suspicion, paranoia, and intrigue leads to the unraveling of their once-strong friendship.

What to Watch For: This is a remake of the 2018 French-language award-winning film of the same name, directed by Belgian filmmaker Olivier Masset-Depasse.

Word on the Street: This is the third film starring Hathaway and Chastain after Interstellar (2014) and Armageddon Time (2022). However, it’s the first time they have shared scenes.

My Take: Anytime two Oscar-winning actors star in a movie, it becomes a must-see film.

Swan Song

Swan Song  (2023)

Rating:  N/A

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, July 26, 2024.

Summary: Swan Song is a documentary that gives us a behind-the-scenes look at one of the great ballet companies, the National Ballet of Canada, as they work to mount a new production of Swan Lake.

What to Watch For: The film won the Documentary Feature Award at the 2023 Calgary International Film Festival.

Word on the Street: Neve Campbell is the film’s executive producer.

My Take: I love documentaries that give us an inside look at the lives and work of dancers.
