A Look at the 6 New Movies Coming Out This Week: ‘Trap,’ ‘Harold and the Purple Crayon’ and More!
Considering a trip to the theater this week? A movie night in? With six new movies coming out this week – there’s something for everyone. Check out the complete list of new releases below along with their trailers!
First up is the latest from M. Night Shyamalan, Trap, which tells the story of a father and daughter attending a massive pop concert where a notorious serial killer is also in attendance.
The beloved children’s book Harold and the Purple Crayon is finally being adapted for the screen. It stars Zachary Levi, Lil Rel Howery, and Benjamin Bottani.
Adding to the mix is the comedy Coup!, which is about a mischievous cook who leads an uprising against a wealthy family. The film stars Peter Sarsgaard and Billy Magnussen.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: July 29, 2024 – August 4, 2024
Trap (2024)
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: In theaters nationwide on Friday, August 2, 2024.
Summary: In Trap, a father (Josh Hartnett) and his daughter (Ariel Donoghue) attend the concert of a lifetime. However, not everything is as it seems, and something dark and sinister is about to make its appearance at this concert.
What to Watch for: The movie is from filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense (2000), Knock at the Cabin (2023)). His daughter, Saleka Shyamalan, portrays the concert performer Lady Raven, whom the father and daughter are seeing.
Word on the Street: Josh Hartnett was just part of the ensemble cast of Oppenheimer and had starring roles in Pearl Harbor (2001) and Black Hawk Down (2001).
My Take: M. Night Shyamalan has had a bit of a resurgence with his films Split, Glass, and Knock at the Cabin. Let’s hope it continues.
Harold and the Purple Crayon (2024)
Rating: PG
Release Date: In theaters on Friday, August 2, 2024.
Summary: Harold and the Purple Crayon is about Harold (Zachary Levi), who has a magic purple crayon that allows him to create anything he can imagine. Harold has grown up and has now drawn himself off the book’s pages and into the physical world. Is the world ready for Harold and his magical crayon?
What to Watch For: The film is a sequel to the book of the same name by Crockett Johnson. In the book, Harold is a child. The film takes place after Harold has grown up.
Word on the Street: The cast includes Lil Rel Howery, Zooey Deschanel, Jemaine Clement, Tanya Reynolds, Alfred Molina, Benjamin Bottani, and Ravi Patel.
My Take: The film has been in the works since 1992 with a long list of creators trying to get the project off the ground, including Maurice Sendak, Michael Tokin and David O. Russell.
Kneecap (2024)
Rating: R
Release Date: In theaters on Friday, August 2, 2024.
Summary: Kneecap starts on that fateful day in West Belfast when a disillusioned music teacher JJ met two self-confessed ‘low life scum’ and decide to create a band. That band, Kneecap, will change the sound of Irish music forever.
What to Watch For: The film is based on the true-life story of the Belfast-based hip-hop trio Kneecap. It stars the band members as themselves.
What to Watch For: The film premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, the first time an Irish-language film has been shown at the festival.
My Take: The film was shot on location in Belfast.
Coup! (2023)
Rating: N/A
Release Date: In theaters on Friday, August 2, 2024.
Summary: Coup! takes place during the 1918 influenza epidemic, when a new cook named Floyd Monk (Peter Sarsgaard) comes to work for the family of wealthy journalist Jay (Billy Magnussen) and his socialite wife Julie (Gadon) at their family estate on an island. It’s a hiring that will turn the family’s idyllic life upside down.
What to Watch For: The film premiered at the 2023 Venice International Film Festival.
Word on the Street: Co-director Austin Stark is known for his films, The Runner (2015) and The God Committee (2021).
My Take: I will never forget Peter Sarsgaard as Chuck Lane in the 2003 film Shattered Glass.
Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes (2024)
Rating: TV-MA
Release Date: Premiering on Max on Saturday, August 3, 2024.
Summary: The documentary Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes uses newly discovered interviews with Elizabeth Taylor to give us an inside look at a star who fascinated a world long before the internet and social media.
What to Watch For: In addition to the tapes, the filmmakers were given unprecedented access to Taylor’s personal archive.
Word on the Street: The film had its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
My Take: My favorite role of Elizabeth Taylor was of Katharina in the 1967 film The Taming of The Shrew with her husband, Richard Burton.
Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie (2024)
Rating: N/A
Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, August 2, 2024.
Summary: Pals Sandy Cheeks and SpongeBob go on an adventure in Savving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie when Bikini Bottom is suddenly scooped out of the ocean and must be saved from the clutches of an evil CEO.
What to Watch For: The film’s release marks the 20th anniversary of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004).
Word on the Street: This is the fourth movie in the SpongeBob SquarePants movie franchise.
My Take: Of course, Tom Kenny is voicing the character of the legendary SpongeBob SquarePants.
