A Look at the 7 New Movies Coming Out This Week: ‘Borderlands,’ ‘It Ends With Us’ and More!

Curious what the new movies coming out this week are? In this week’s lineup, we have a film that’s based on a best-selling video game, a suspense film that’s based on a best-selling book, and an action comedy about a heist that goes wrong. 

First up is the highly anticipated flick Borderlands, starring Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis. Also debuting is the the suspense film It Ends With Us, starring Blake Lively, which is based on the best-selling book.

Lastly, we have The Instigators, a comedy that features two Oscar winners, Matt Damon and Casey Affleck. The movie is about two robbers who go on the run after kidnapping one of their therapists.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: August 5 – 11, 2024

Borderlands

Borderlands  (2024)

Rating:  PG-13

Release Date:  In theaters nationwide on Friday, August 9, 2024.

Summary: Borderlands tells the tale of Lilith (Cate Blanchett), an infamous bounty hunter who has reluctantly returned to her home planet, Pandora, to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Edgar Ramirez), the universe’s most powerful villain. Lilith recruits a ragtag team to find the missing daughter, who might be the key to saving the universe.

What to Watch For: The cast includes Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Menteanu, Jack Black, Gina Gershon, Haley Bennett, and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Word on the Street: The film is from Eli Roth, known for his movies Hostel (2005), The House with a Clock in Its Wall (2018), and Thanksgiving (2023).

My Take: The film is based on one of the best-selling video games of all time. It’s intriguing to see if it can meet the expectations of the game’s fans.

It Ends with Us

It Ends with Us   (2024)

Rating:  PG-14 

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, August 9, 2024. 

Summary: It Ends with Us tells the story of Lily (Blake Lively), who has overcome a traumatic childhood and has moved to Boston to open her flower shop. There, she meets the man of her dreams, a neurosurgeon, Kyle (Justin Baldoni), and falls in love. However, she starts to see a pattern in Kyle that brings up the mistakes of her childhood. Then Atlas (Brandon Sklenar), Lily’s first love, reenters her life, and Lily must rely on her strength to make tough decisions.

What to Watch For: The film is based on Colleen Hoover’s best-selling book of the same name.

Word on the Street: Fans of the book were initially dissatisfied with the casting of Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni because they were older than the characters in the book. Colleen Hoover has stated that the characters in the book were too young and requested that it be corrected for the movie.

My Take: If the film does well at the box office, it will be interesting to see if there is a sequel. Colleen Hoover wrote a sequel to the first book, It Starts with Us, published in 2022.

Cuckoo

Cuckoo  (2024)

Rating:  R

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, August 9, 2024.

Summary: In Cuckoo, Gretchen (Hunter Schafer) is seventeen and is mad at the world after her mother died and her father has remarried. She and her family move into a resort, where Gretchen’s father (Marton Csókás) and stepmother (Mila Lieu) have been hired to design a new resort to replace the aging one. Gretchen takes a job as a receptionist at the resort, and strange things start happening. It’s a job that just might be Gretchen’s last.

What to Watch For: The film was nominated for an Audience Award at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival.

Word on the Street: Hunter Schafer is best known for her portrayal of Jules Vaughn on the TV series Euphoria.

My Take: This is Tilman Singer’s 2nd feature film. His first was Luz (2018), which won the Best Horror Feature at the 20198 Fantastic Fest.

The Instigators

The Instigators  (2024)

Release Date:  Premiering on Apple TV+ on Friday, August 9, 2024. 

Summary:  In The Instigators two robbers (Matt Damon, Casey Affleck) are part of a heist that goes bad. With the assistance of one of their therapists (Hong Chau), they go on the run. To put it simply, they have a lot of problems to work out.

What to Watch For: The film is co-written by Casey Affleck and is produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

Word on the Street: Hong Chau is hot off her Best Supporting Academy Award nomination for her role in The Whale.

My Take: The film has a strong supporting cast that includes Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, Ron Perlman, Paul Walter Hauser, and Michael Stuhlbarg.

Sugarcane

Sugarcane  (2024)

Rating:  R

Release Date:  In select theaters on Friday, August 9, 2024.

Summary: The documentary Sugarcane tells the story of the St. Joseph Mission, where, in 2021, unmarked graves were discovered, bringing out long-buried stories of how indigenous children were mistreated for years, all in the name of Christianity.

What to Watch For: The film won the Directing Award for Best Documentary at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.

Word on the Street: Film critics who have seen the film believe it is an almost sure thing for an Oscar nomination.

My Take: Co-director Julian Brave NoiseCat is a member of the Canim Lake Band Tsq’secen of the Secwepemc Nation in the Canadian province of British Columbia.

One Fast Move

One Fast Move  (2024)

Rating:  R

Release Date:  Premiering on Amazon Prime on Thursday, August 8, 2024.

Summary: One Fast Move is about Wes (K.J. Apa), a young man who is down on his luck but dreams of becoming a professional motorcycle racer. He seeks out his estranged father (Eric Dane) to mentor him and repair their relationship. With the help of a new love (Maria Reficco) and a motorcycle owner (Edward James Olmos), Wes might succeed if he doesn’t wreck too many times.

What to Watch For: K.J. Apa is best known for portraying Archie Andrews on the CW TV series Riverdale.

Word on the Street: This is director Kelly Blatz’s second feature film. His first was the 2019 award-winning Senior Love Triangle.

My Take: Edward James Olmos is a fan favorite at Dragon Con, having played roles in Battlestar Galactica, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Blade Runner.

Inside the Mind of a Dog

Release Date:  Premieres on Netflix on Friday, August 9, 2024.

Summary: The documentary Inside the Mind of a Dog takes viewers on a journey into the world of man’s best friend, the dog, revealing scientific and emotional insights into our furry buddies.

What to Watch For: The film is narrated by Rob Lowe.

Word on the Street: The film is from award-winning filmmaker Andy Mitchell, who also gave us the 2022 documentary Inside the Mind of a Cat.

My Take: I can’t wait to find out what makes a dog do the things that they do.
