‘Funny Girl’ Review: Katerina McCrimmon Steals the Show in Atlanta
Funny Girl, the beloved Broadway musical that first premiered on Broadway in 1964 (with Barbra Streisand in the lead), has taken the stage at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre. And its timeless charm is bringing all the old-school Broadway vibes back!
The Music and Performances:
Katherina McCrimmon shines in the lead role of Fanny Brice, delivering a powerhouse vocal performance that effortlessly captures the character’s infectious energy and comedic timing. Her renditions of iconic songs like “Don’t Rain On My Parade” and “I’m the Greatest Star” are nothing short of spectacular.
And while the rest of the cast does a fantastic job as well, it’s McCrimmon who effortlessly steals the show.
The live orchestra, led by music director Elaine Davidson, adds a rich backdrop that truly brings Jule Styne’s beloved score to life. From the brassy, show-stopping numbers to the more intimate, emotional ballads, the orchestra delivers an incredible performance as well.
The Set Design & Costume:
The production’s set design transports the audience to the glamorous world of 1920’s Broadway, with elaborate backdrops and detailed recreations of iconic performance venues. And the costumes are equally impressive, with lavish, gowns and suits that add to the show’s visual appeal. It’s a playground for the senses of anyone who loves this era of Broadway!
The History of Funny Girl
For those unfamiliar with the show, Funny Girl takes audiences behind the scenes of Fanny Brice’s rise to fame, chronicling her journey from a young, undiscovered performer with big dreams to one of the world’s most renowned stage actresses. But it’s not all smiles and laughter on the homefront, as her husband John struggles to deal with his misfortunes amidst Fanny’s endless successes.
While the tale the musical tells may feel quite dated (women offering to do anything for their husbands – even if it means giving up their dreams) – Thankfully, the ending of this one turns the story around by the final scene and leaves audiences with a reminder that it’s possible to make it through and smile again – even in the toughest of times.
