New Movies Coming Out This Week: August 19 – 25, 2024
Blink Twice (2024)
Rating: R
Release Date: In theaters nationwide on Friday, August 23, 2024.
Summary: Blink Twice starts when Frida (Naomi Ackie) and her best friend Jess ( Alia Shawkat) sneak into a big fundraiser party for tech billionaire Slater King (Channing Tatum). Never in their wildest dreams did they think they would be invited to Slater’s private island to party with his friends. What follows is a dream of wild nights and sun-soaked days that slowly reveals itself to be a nightmare.
What to Watch For: Zoë Kravitz directs the film and has a cast that includes Christian Slater, Simon Rex, Adria Arjona, Haley Joel Osment, Kyle MacLachlan, and Geena Davis.
Word on the Street: Zoë Kravitz co-wrote the film with E. T. Feigenbaum, who wrote an award-winning episode of the TV series High Fidelity in which Zoë starred.
My Take: I always love it when a favorite actor of mine has an unexpected role in a film. This time, it’s Geena Davis, playing Slater King’s overworked personal assistant.
The Crow (2024)
Rating: R
Release Date: In theaters on Friday, August 23, 2024.
Summary: In The Crow, soulmates Eric Draven (Bill Skarsgård) and Shelly Webster (FKA Twigs) are brutally murdered when Shelly’s dark past catches up with them. Eric is given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, becoming a man who rises from the dead to seek revenge, traveling between the worlds of the living and the dead.
What to Watch For: The film is based on the late 80s comic book series by James O’Barr. The film is said to more closely follow the comic book than the 1994 film of the same name that starred Brandon Lee.
Word on the Street: The film has been in development for over fifteen years.
My Take: While in development hell, Mark Wahlberg, Bradley Cooper, Tom Hiddleston, Luke Evans, Jack Houston, and Jason Momoa were all attached to star in the film.
The Supremes at Earl’s All You Can Eat (2024)
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: Premieres on Hulu on Friday, August 23, 2024.
Summary: The Supremes at Earl’s All You Can Eat follows three best friends (Uzo Aduba, Aunjanue Ellis, and Sanaa Lathan), who, when younger, were given the nickname The Supremes. We follow the three through the decades as they live their lives, through marriages and children, bad times and good. The one thing they always had was each other.
What to Watch For: The film is based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Edward Kelsey Moore.
Word on the Street: The film is from filmmaker Tina Mabry, known for her award-winning 2009 film Mississippi Damned.
My Take: Sanna Lathan starred in one of my favorite films, Love & Basketball (2000).
The Killer (2024)
Rating: R
Release Date: Premiering on Peacock on Friday, August 23, 2024.
Summary: In The Killer, Zee (Nathalie Emmanuel) is the most lethal and feared assassin in the business. In fact, she is known by the name Queen of the Dead. Zee takes a job to kill a young blind woman (Jenna Silvers) and has a change of heart. Now, every hitman in Paris is out to kill her, and her only ally is a French detective (Omar Sy).
What to Watch For: The movie is from legendary filmmaker John Woo, who is known for his action films Broken Arrow (1996), Face/Off (1997), and Mission: Impossible II (2000).
Word on the Street: This is a remake of Woo’s 1989 film The Killer, which made John Wood a star.
My Take: Nathalie Emmanuel is best known for her role as Missandei on the TV series Game of Thrones.
Strange Darling (2023)
Rating: R
Release Date: In theaters on Friday, August 23, 2024.
Summary: Strange Darling is a story where nothing is what it seems when a one-night stand between two people (Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner) turns into a tale of a murder spree of a serial killer.
What to Watch For: The film had its premiere at the 2023 Fantastic Fest.
Word on the Street: The film won the Best Director award at the 2024 Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival.
My Take: Actor Giovanni Ribisi was not only a producer on the film, he was also the director of photography.
Between the Temples (2024)
Rating: R
Release Date: In theaters on Friday, August 23, 2024.
Summary: Between the Temples tells the story of Ben (Jason Schwartzman), a cantor who is grief stricken after the death of his wife and has lost his voice. Ben is a man who is lost until he meets Carla, his 70-year-old grade school music teacher (Carol Kane). Carla longs for her bat mitzvah, which she had never had the opportunity to experience, and it could be the turning point in Ben’s life.
What to Watch For: The movie has been a big hit on the film festival circuit, winning two awards at the 2024 Champs-Élysées Film Festival.
Word on the Street: Between the Temples is directed by Nathan Silver, known for his award-winning film Uncertain Terms (2014).
My Take: I have been a fan of Carol Kane since her Oscar-nominated role as Gitl in the 1975 film Hester Street.
