New Movies Coming Out This Week: August 26, 2024 – September 1, 2024
AfrAId (2024)
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: In theaters nationwide on Friday, August 30, 2024.
Summary: AfrAId takes place when the Curtis family is lucky to be selected to test a new home device called AIA that can learn the family’s behavior and anticipate their needs. AIA will also ensure that the Curtis family is safe and that no one gets in their way. Maybe a little too safe.
What to Watch For: The cast includes John Cho, Katherine Waterston, Isaac Bae, Havana Rose Liu, Lukita Maxwell, David Dastmalchian, and Keith Carradine.
Word on the Street: Blumhouse produced the film, which is known for its horror films, such as M3GAN and Five Nights at Freddy’s.
My Take: The film is written and directed by Chris Weitz, whose last two films were Operation Finale and A Better Life.
Slingshot (2024)
Rating: R
Release Date: In theaters on Friday, August 30, 2024.
Summary: In Slingshot, an elite trio of astronauts (Casey Affleck, Laurence Fishburne, and Tomer Capone) are aboard a years-long trip to Saturn’s moon Titan. Unfortunately, their mission may be compromised, so they decide to perform a slingshot maneuver that could either redirect them back on course or send them off into deep space.
What to Watch For: This is a busy month for Casey Affleck, having just starred in the Apple TV+ film The Instigators with Matt Damon.
Word on the Street: The movie is from award-winning filmmaker Mikael Håfström (Evil (2004), 1408 (2008)).
My Take: I am always up for seeing a psychological horror film that takes place in space.
The Deliverance (2024)
Rating: R
Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, August 30, 2024.
Summary: In The Deliverance, Ebony Jackson (Andra Day) is a single parent who moves her family into a new home, hoping for a fresh start. Ebony is determined to put her troubles behind her, but something in the house is causing trouble. With Child Protective Services threatening to tear her family apart, she must battle a demon in a battle for her life and the souls of her children.
What to Watch For: The cast includes Glenn Close, Mo’Nique, Anthony B. Jenkins, Miss Lawrence, Demi Singleton, Tasha Smith, Omar Epps, Caleb McLaughlin, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.
Word on the Street: The movie is from Lee Daniels, the two-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker (Precious (2010).
My Take: Lee Daniels and Mo’Nique have made up after the longtime feud and she agreed to be in this film.
City of Dreams (2023)
Rating: R
Release Date: In theaters on Friday, August 30, 2024.
Summary: City of Dreams is about Jesús (Ari Lopez), who dreams of becoming a soccer star for his local team. His father surprisingly sends him to Los Angeles to train, but Jesús learns his destination isn’t a training camp but a sweatshop that his father has sold his son to. Jesús now dreams of escaping from his nightmare.
What to Watch For: The film is based on a true story.
Word on the Street: Yalitza Aparicio Martinez, who earned an Academy Award nomination for her role in the 2018 film Roma, is an executive producer of the film.
My Take: The film made its world premiere at the 2023 Mammoth Film Festival.
You Gotta Believe (2024)
Rating: PG
Release Date: In theaters on Friday, August 30, 2024.
Summary: You Gotta Believe is about a Little League baseball team of misfits who dedicate their season to their best player’s dying father. Things start turning around, and they accomplish what they thought was impossible: playing in the World Series final.
What to Watch For: The film is based on the true story of a team from Ft. Worth, Texas.
Word on the Street: Academy Award nominee Greg Kinnear plays the team’s coach, and Luke Wilson plays the father the team rallies around.
My Take: I remember the game that the team played, it was the longest Little League World Series final ever played.
1992 (2024)
Rating: R
Release Date: In theaters on Friday, August 30, 2024.
Summary: 1992 is about Mercer (Tyrese Gibson), a father who is trying to reconnect with his son (Christopher Ammanuel) during the unrest following the Rodney King verdict. On the other side of town, a father (Ray Liotta) and son (Scott Eastwood) plan a heist to steal catalytic converters from a factory. As the riots break out, the two families are about to collide.
What to Watch For: This is the last film that the late Ray Liotta filmed before his death.
Word on the Street: The film’s executive producer is Snoop Dogg.
My Take: It’s going to be sad seeing Ray Liotta up on the movie screen one last time.
The Wasp (2024)

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, August 30, 2024.
Summary: In The Wasp, Heather (Naomie Harris) and Carla (Natalie Dormer) haven’t seen each other since they were youngsters in school. They meet by chance, and Heather comes to Carla with an unexpected proposition that could change their lives forever. That proposition involves murder.
What to Watch For: The film is based on a play by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm, who also wrote the screenplay.
Word on the Street: The film premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival.
My Take: The film is directed by Guillem Morales. Morales directed a movie I loved, the 2005 film The Uninvited Guest.
Tokyo Cowboy (2023)
Rating: PG
Release Date: In theaters on Friday, August 30, 2024.
Summary: Tokyo Cowboy is about Hideki (Arata Iura), a Japanese corporate executive known for turning failing companies around. When his company is about to liquidate a money-hemorrhaging cattle ranch in Montana, Hideki decides he can go to America and turn the ranch into a money-maker. Hideki is about to learn firsthand about life on a cattle ranch, and it’s going to be a bumpy ride.
What to Watch For: The film has been a big hit on the film festival circuit, winning two awards at the Tallgrass International Film Festival.
Word on the Street: Arata Iura is best known for his roles in Like Father, Like Son (2013) and Air Doll (2009).
My Take: I love the trailer for this film and can’t wait to see it.
