Get ready to witness the birth of an epic rivalry in Transformers One. For the first time since 1986, we’re treated to a feature-length animated Transformers film, diving deep into the backstories of Optimus Prime and Megatron.

Meanwhile, Wolfs brings together the dream team of Brad Pitt and George Clooney as professional crime scene fixers. These lone wolves are about to learn that sometimes, two heads are better than one – especially when they’re in way over their heads.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: September 16 – 22, 2024

Transformers One

Rating:  PG

Release Date:  In theaters nationwide on Friday, September 20, 2024.

Summary: Transformers One tells the origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron, who, when they were young, were friends who bonded like brothers. Little did they know that the two would change the fate of Cybertron forever after discovering what they had always been told was false.

What to Watch For:  The voice cast includes Chris Hemsworth as Orion Pax/Optimus Prime, Brian Tyree Henry as D-16/Megatron, Scarlett Johansson as Elita-1, Keegan Michael Key as B-127/Bumblebee, Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime, and Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion.

Word on the Street: Transformers One is the first theatrical animated movie since the classic original 1986 animated film Transformers: The Movie.

My Take: I love that Chris Hemsworth worked with Peter Cullen, who has been the voice of Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise, in order to get the voice right for the role.

Wolfs

Wolfs  (2024)

Rating: R

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, September 20, 2024, and Apple TV+ on Friday, September 27, 2024.

Summary: In Wolfs, a professional fixer (George Clooney) is hired to cover up a high-profile crime. However, a second fixer (Brad Pitt) has also been hired to clean up the crime site. The two ‘lone wolves’ are forced to work together, and soon, the two find that their night starts spiraling out of control, much to their dismay.

What to Watch For: This is the fifth film that Clooney and Pitt have starred in, which includes the ‘Oceans’ trilogy and the 2008 film Burn After Reading.

Word on the Street: Both Pitt and Clooney are film producers and negotiated that the film would open in theaters before going to Apple TV+.

My Take: The movie is by filmmaker Jon Watts, who is known for his Spider-Man trilogy starring Tom Holland.

Never Let Go

Never Let Go  (2024)

Rating:  R

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, September 20, 2024. 

Summary: Never Let Go is about a mother (Halle Berry) and her two sons (Anthony B. Jenkins, Percy Daggs IV) who have been haunted by an evil spirit for years. Even when traveling outside, they keep themselves connected by tethering themselves with ropes, ensuring they are always connected back to their house. When one of the boys questions if the evil is real and the ties that bind them together are severed, their fight for survival becomes life and death.

What to Watch For: Director Alexandre Aja has plenty of experience with horror films, having directed The Hill Have Eyes (2006), Piranha 3D (2010) and Crawl (2019).

Word on the Street: Screenwriters of the film KC Coughlin and Ryan Grassby are best known for writing the 2016 film Mean Dreams starring Bill Paxton.

My Take: One of my favorite Halle Berry roles is Angela in the 1992 movie Boomerang, starring Eddie Murphy. 

A Different Man

A Different Man  (2024)

Rating:  R

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, September 20, 2024.

Summary: In A Different Man, Edward (Sebastian Stan) is a man with neurofibromatosis, a condition that causes facial tumors that make his face almost unrecognizable. Edward is barely making a living as an actor in corporate videos and dreams of someday impressing his neighbor (Renate Reinsve). Edward’s life is about to change when he is given the opportunity to undergo facial reconstructive surgery that will transform his face. Be careful of what you dream of!

What to Watch For: Adam Pearson, an actor with Neurofibromatosis, portrays Oswald, who rises to stardom in a play based on when Edward had the condition.

Word on the Street: Filmmaker Aaron Schimberg is best known for his award-winning 2018 film Chained for Life, starring Adam Pearson.

My Take: Sebastian Stan won the Best Leading Performance at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival.

Child Star

Child Star  (2024)

Release Date:  Premiering on Hulu on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.

Summary: The documentary Child Star explores the world of being a child star and how growing up in the spotlight and their ascension to fame, riches and power affects their adult lives.

What to Watch For: The film is co-directed by Demi Lovato, who got her start as a child on the TV series Barney & Friends.

Word on the Street: Christina Ricci, Drew Barrymore, Raven-Symone, Kenan Thompson, Jojo Siwa, and Alyson Stoner are interviewed in the film.

My Take: Lovato, who was the subject of the 2021 documentary Demi Lovato: Dancing With the Devil, certainly knows the perils of being under the spotlight at such a young age.

All Shall Be Well

All Shall Be Well  (2024)

Summary: In All Shall Be Well, Angie and Pat are a lesbian couple who have been together for over four decades in a country that doesn’t allow same-sex marriages. Pat’s unexpected death has turned Angie’s (Patra Au) world upside down as she is now at the mercy of Pat’s family, as she struggles with grief, trying to retain her dignity, all the while fighting to keep the home she shared with Pat.

What to Watch For: The film won the Best Feature Film Teddy Award at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The movie is from Award-winning filmmaker Ray Yeung, best known for his 2020 film Twilight’s Kiss.

My Take:  The film is rated at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with ten film critic reviews.

The Critic

The Critic  (2023)

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, September 20, 2024.

Summary: The Critic takes place in 1936 London, where there is one theater critic who is feared and wields the power to kill a play with just a few nasty words, Jimmy Erksine (Ian McKellen). However, times are changing with new ownership of the paper Jimmy works for and a brush with the law, causing Jimmy to lose his job. Jimmy has a plan to get his job back, and it involves an actress (Gemma Arterton) who has never gotten a good review from Jimmy. 

What to Watch For:  The cast includes Lesley Manville, Mark Strong, Ben Barnes, and Alfred Enoch. 

Word on the Street: The movie premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.

My Take: Director of the film Anand Tucker, is best known for his movies Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003) and Leap Year (2010).

Happy Clothes: A Film about Patricia Field

Summary: Happy Clothes: A Film About Patricia Field is a documentary about Patricia Feld, the Emmy-winning costume designer behind fashion ground-breaking TV shows such as Sex and the City, Emily in Paris, Ugly Betty, and the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada.

What to Watch For: The film has been a massive hit on the film festival circuit, winning major awards such as the Rare Pearl Award at the 2023 Denver International Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film features interviews with Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Lily Collins, Darren Star, Vanessa Williams, and Michael Urie.

My Take: I don’t know much about fashion, but I do know that all the shows/films she worked on were trendsetters.

Omni Loop

Summary: Omni Loop starts when Zoya (Mary-Louise Parker) finds out that she has one week to live. Zoya has the ability to go back and relive that week over and over. What would you do if you could live your last days on earth over? Zoya is about to find out.

What to Watch For: The film premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival and was nominated for the Narrative Spotlight Award.

Word on the Street: The cast includes Ayo Edebiri, Carlos Jacott, Hannah Pearl Utt, and Chris Witaske.

My Take: My favorite Mary-Louise Parker role is that of Sarah in the 2010 film RED, which starred Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, and Morgan Freeman.
