Summary: The Wild Robot takes place when a robot named Roz (voiced by Lupita Nyong’o) crashes on Earth and is stranded on an uninhabited island. Roz’s survival depends on her wits and newfound animal friends, including an orphaned baby goose. Roz is going to learn a lot about life and the importance of friends.
What to Watch For: The film is based on the middle grade novel of the same name by Peter Brown.
Word on the Street: The voice cast includes Pedro Pascal, Bill Nighy, Kit Connor, Stephanie Hsu, Ving Rhames, Catherine O’Hara, and Mark Hamill.
My Take: The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Megalopolis (2024)
Rating: R
Release Date: In theaters on Friday, September 27, 2024.
Summary: In Megalopolis, a brilliant architect, Cesar (Adam Driver), wants to rebuild his beloved city and create a utopian future. Not everyone believes in Cesar’s vision, including the greedy mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito). In between the battle for the city is Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), who is divided between her father, the mayor, and Cesar, her beloved.
What to Watch For: The film was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
Word on the Street: Filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola started working on the script in the 80s. The inspiration for the film was Coppola’s love of the history of ancient Rome.
My Take: The cast includes Shia LaBeouf, Laurence Fishburne, Jason Schwartzman, Aubrey Plaza, Jon Voight, Talia Shire, and D.B. Sweeney.
Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story (2024)
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: In select theaters for one night on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, the anniversary of Christopher Reeve’s birthday.
Summary: The documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story tells the story of Christopher Reeve, who went from an unknown stage actor to Superman, only to have his world changed when he suffered a near-fatal horse-riding accident that left him paralyzed.
What to Watch For: Christopher Reeve narrates the film, taken from the audiobooks he did about his life.
Word on the Street: The film uses home movies to show Reeve’s home life. Glenn Close, Susan Sarandon, Whoopi Goldberg, and Reeve’s families are interviewed for the film.
My Take: I can tell you the theater and who I saw the first Superman film with. It was that groundbreaking of a movie.
Bagman (2024)
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: In theaters on Friday, September 27, 2024.
Summary: Bagman begins when Patrick (Sam Claflin) moves back to his hometown. Patrick was always told as a child about an evil threat called the Bagman. His childhood fears have returned, and now the evil that once wanted him now wants his son.
What to Watch For: Director Colm McCarthy is best known for his work on the TV series Peaky Blinders, Curfew, and the 2016 award-winning film The Girl with All the Gifts.
Word on the Street: Sam Claflin is best known for his role as Finnick Odair in The Hunger Games films.
My Take: It’s the perfect time for a scary movie to get us in the mood for Halloween.
In the Summers (2024)

Release Date: In select theaters on Friday, September 27, 2024.
Summary: In the Summers takes place over the years, as Violeta (Dreya Renae Castillo) and her sister Eva (Luciana Quinonez) spent every summer with their father, Vicente (Residente), in New Mexico. What was once a place of fun and love has, through the years, become very different, now a place of problems and misunderstanding.
What to Watch For: The film won two awards at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, including the Grand Jury Prize.
Word on the Street: The film is loosely based on filmmaker Alessandra Lacorazza Samudio’s own childhood.
My Take: I can’t wait to see this film that was a hit on the film festival circuit.
Killer Heat (2024)
Rating: R
Release Date: Premiering on Amazon Prime on Thursday, September 26, 2024.
Summary: In Killer Heat, Nick Bali (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), is a private eye American expat living in Greece, and has been hired to investigate the death of a young shipping magnate, Leo, on the island of Crete. Nick discovers that the victim’s sister-in-law, Penelope (Shailene Woodley), doesn’t believe that Leo’s death was an accident. Nick soon learns that the rich control the island, and they don’t want him around to mess up their world.
What to Watch For: The film was shot on location in Greece.
Word on the Street: Richard Madden plays both the victim, Leo, and his twin brother, Elias, who is married to Penelope.
My Take: Director Philippe Lacôte is known for award-winning films, Run (2014) and Night of the Kings (2020).
Lee (2023)
Rating: R
Release Date: In theaters on Friday, September 27, 2024.
Summary: Lee is the story of Elizabeth ‘Lee’ Miller (Kate Winslet), a fashion model who became an acclaimed war correspondent for Vogue magazine during World War II.
What to Watch For: Kate Winslet began researching Lee’s life when a friend told her how much she resembled the war correspondent.
Word on the Street: The production was given full access to the Lee Miller archives.
My Take: The film is based on the book The Lives of Lee Miller, written by her son, Antony Penrose.
Rez Ball (2024)
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, September 27, 2024.
Summary: Rez Ball takes place in New Mexico, where the Chuska Warriors, a high school basketball team rich in Native American heritage, are facing a season without their star player. The team will have to unite like never before to keep their dreams of winning a state championship alive.
What to Watch For: The film is based on the award-winning book Canyon Dreams: A Basketball Season on the Navajo Reservation by Michael Powell.
Word on the Street: The film is co-produced by LeBron James and Sterlin Harjo, who co-created the TV series Reservation Dogs.
My Take: I love they had over 5,000 submissions for the ten player parts.
Empire Waist (2024)

Summary: In Empire Waist, Lenore (Mia Kaplan) has gone through life trying to stay in the background and unnoticed because of her weight. Things change when it’s discovered that Lenore has a talent for designing clothes, clothes for everyone, not just the thin and rich. Lenore will have to conquer her fears and take the spotlight she deserves.
What to Watch For: Mia Kaplan is best known for her role as Chloe on the TV series SMILF.
Word on the Street: When writing the script, writer/director Claire Ayoub did readings of her screenplay to audiences across the country, getting valuable feedback.
My Take: One of my favorite actors, Missi Pyle, plays Lenore’s mother in the film.
Sleep (2023)

Release Date: Available on most streaming platforms on Friday, September 27, 2024.
Summary: Sleep is about Soo-jin (Jung Yu-mi) and Hyun-su (Lee Sun-kyun),a married couple about to have a baby. Soo-jin begins to worry about her husband, who starts sleepwalking at night. It becomes so bad that she is worried that he might accidentally hurt her or their soon-to-be-born son. What Soo-jin doesn’t know is that her husband’s sleep problems are going to get worse. Really worse.
What to Watch For: The film wowed audiences as part of the Midnight Madness program at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.
Word on the Street: The film won the Discovery Award as the Best Debut Feature at the 2024 Raindance Film Festival.
My Take: With over 50 film critic reviews, the film is at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Notice to Quit (2024)

Summary: In Notice to Quit, Andy (Michael Zegen) has just about given up on being an actor and is a struggling New York City rental agent who is now caught up in his own eviction crisis. As things are crashing down around him, Andy’s estranged 10-year-old daughter, Anna (Kasey Bella Suarez), shows up on his doorstep.
What to Watch For: The movie was shot on 35mm film on location in NYC.
Word on the Street: This is writer/director Simon Hacker’s feature film debut.
My Take: I love the tagline for the film: ‘On the hottest day in New York, Andy & Anna don’t have time to sweat.’
