Joker: Folie A Deux

Release Date: In theaters nationwide on Friday, October 4, 2024. 

Summary: In Joker: Folie à Deux, Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), the failed comedian, has caused a lot of trouble and has been put away in the Arkham State Hospital. There, he meets the love of his life, Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga), and they soon embark on a journey of mayhem and romance. 

What to Watch For: This is the sequel to Todd Phillips’s Oscar-winning 2019 film Joker.

Word on the Street: The film was nominated for the Golden Lion Best Film Award at the 2024 Venice Film Festival.

My Take: “Folie a Deux” means “Madness of Two” in French, which gave us a clue before more information was known about the film that the Harley Quinn character was probably going to be in the movie.

Salem's Lot

Salem’s Lot  (2024)

Rating: R

Release Date: Premiering on Max on Thursday, October 3, 2024.

Summary: Salem’s Lot is about Ben (Lewis Pullman), a writer who returns to his childhood hometown after twenty years to write a book about a long-abandoned house named the Marsten House, which Ben had a horrible experience as a child. Ben soon learns that an ancient evil has returned, which he believes is turning residents into vampires.

What to Watch For: The film is based on the infamous Stephen King novel of the same name.

Word on the Street: The book has had several adaptations; the most famous is the 1979 TV mini-series that starred James Mason, Lance Kerwin, and David Soul as the vampire.

My Take: The 1979 mini-series was directed by one of my favorite horror directors, Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre).

Hold Your Breath

Hold Your Breath   (2024)

Rating: R

Release Date: Premiering on Hulu on Thursday, October 3, 2024.

Summary: Hold Your Breath takes place in 1930s Oklahoma amid the region’s horrific dust storms. An evil presence named The Grey Man is killing people, and one mother (Sarah Paulson) is determined to stop him from killing her two daughters.

What to Watch For: The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film is written by Karrie Crouse, who co-directed the movie with Will Joines. The two are known for their award-winning music video, Propagation, which they did with Com Truise.

My Take: Sarah Paulson is known for her multiple roles on the TV series American Horror Story.

The Outrun

The Outrun   (2024)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, October 4, 2024.

Summary: In The Outrun, Rona (Saoirse Ronan) is a troubled young woman whose life in London was filled with alcohol and mayhem. To get sober, she travels back home to Scotland’s Orkney Islands, hoping that she can find something to bring her peace in its wild beauty and isolation.

What to Watch For: The film is based on the 2016 memoir of the same name by Amy Liptrot. Liptrot co-wrote the script with the film’s director, Nora Finscheidt.

Word on the Street: The film premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.

My Take: Ronan’s husband, actor Jack Lowden, suggested that Saoirse should play the part of Rona. Ronan and Lowden are the film’s producers.

Monster Summer

Monster Summer   (2024)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, October 4, 2024.

Summary: Monster Summer is about Noah (Mason Thames) and his friends, who are ready for a big summer of fun on Martha’s Vineyard, but their plans are disrupted when some kids they know are suddenly turned into almost lifeless zombies. Noah enlists the help of a retired police detective (Mel Gibson) to embark on a monstrous adventure to save their beloved vacation spot.

What to Watch For: The cast includes Lorraine Bracco, Kevin James, and Patrick Renna.

Word on the Street: Patrick Renna knows a few things about films about kids having starred as a child in The Sandlot (1993) as Ham Porter and Larry Musgrove in The Big Green (1995).

My Take: Movies about kids taking on evil forces are always fun to watch.

White Bird: a wonder story

White Bird: A Wonder Story   (2023)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, October 4, 2024.

Summary: In White Bird: A Wonder Story, after being kicked out of one school for being a bully, Julian (Bryce Gheisar) is having trouble fitting in at his new school. His grandmother, Grand-mere (Helen Mirren), tells Julian how she, a young Jewish girl, was hidden by a family in a French village during World War II. She tells Julian how a boy she made fun of and bullied became her savior and best friend.

What to Watch For:  This is a sequel to the 2017 film Wonder.

Word on the Street: The film is based on the graphic novel of the same name by R. J. Palacio.

My Take: Bryce Gheisar is reprising his role of Julian from the first Wonder film.

It's What's Inside

It’s What’s Inside   (2024)

Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, October 4, 2024.

Summary: It’s What’s Inside happens when a pre-wedding party descends into madness after an estranged friend shows up unexpectantly with a mysterious suitcase. A suitcase that will change all their lives, whether or not they want it.

What to Watch For: The cast includes Brittany O’Grady, James Morosini, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Devon Terrell, Gavin Leatherwood, Reina Hardesty, Nina Bloomgarden, and David W. Thompson.

Word on the Street: The film premiered at the Midnight section of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.

My Take: The film was bought by Netflix for 17 million dollars, a record for a film showing at the Midnight section.

Look Back

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, October 4, 2024.

Summary: In Look Back, Fujino, an overly confident school kid who draws manga, is almost completely different from Kyomoto, a shut-in who also draws manga. They form, over the years, an unlikely friendship over drawing that will change both their lives.

What to Watch For: The film is based on the highly popular manga of the same name written and illustrated by Tatsuki Fujimoto.

Word on the Street: The film screened at the Japan Cuts: Festival of New Japanese Cinema in New York City this past summer.

My Take: I know the manga, published online, was a tremendous hit in Japan, reaching over 4 million reads in just two days.

V/H/S/Beyond

Release Date: Premiering on Shudder on Friday, October 4, 2024.

Summary: V/H/S/Beyond is six bloodcurdling tales that have been discovered in this found-footage anthology which pushes the boundaries of fear and suspense.

What to Watch For: This is the seventh installment of the V/H/S franchise.

Word on the Street: The movie has films directed by Christian and Justin Long, Kate Siegel, Justin Martinez, Virat Pal, Jordan Downey, and Jay Cheel.

My Take: Actress and known ‘screen queen’ Kate Siegel (Oculus, Hush, The Haunting of Hill House) is making her directorial debut with a short named Stowaway, written by her husband Mike Flanagan.

House of Spoils

House of Spoils   (2024)

Rating: R

Release Date: Premiering on Amazon Prime on Thursday, October 3, 2024.

Summary: House of Spoils begins when Chef (Ariana DeBose) opens her first restaurant. Almost from the start, everything has gone wrong. She begins to doubt herself, then realizes that a powerful evil spirit in the restaurant threatens to sabotage her at every turn.

What to Watch For: The cast includes Marton Csokas, Arian Moayed, Barbie Ferreira, and Amara Karan.

Word on the Street: The film premiered at the 2024 Fantastic Fest.

My Take: The films co-writers/directors Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy are known for the award-winning 2019 film Blow the Man Down.

Blink

Summary: Blink is a documentary about the Pelletier family, who find out that three of their four children will soon lose their vision to retinitis pigmentosa, a rare, incurable disorder that leads to permanent blindness. The family sets out on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to explore as many of the wonders of the world as they can while they can still see it. 

What to Watch For: The film is directed by Daniel Roher, known for his Oscar-winning documentary Navalny (2022), and Edmund Stenson, known for his award-winning short The Martyr (2022).

Word on the Street: The film had its world premiere at the 2024 Telluride Film Festival.

My Take:  The movie’s tagline says it all: ‘Don’t lose sight of what matters.’
