Curious what movies are releasing this week? We’ve got you covered! The ‘Smilers’ are back, and this time, they are terrorizing a pop star, and we have a romance between a woman who is determined to stay single and a just divorced man who isn’t looking for love.

Smile 2 brings back the horror with a pop star (Naomi Scott) who starts experiencing increasingly terrifying events that make her question her sanity.

In We Live in Time, Florence Pugh plays an up-and-coming chef, and Andrew Garfield plays a recent divorcée who is just trying to survive. A chance encounter brings them together, something they both didn’t expect and possibly want.

New Movies Coming Out This Week:  October 14 – 20, 2024

Smile 2

Release Date:  In theaters nationwide on Friday, October 18, 2024. 

Summary: In Smile 2, Pop sensation Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) is about to embark on a world tour when she begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events. The curse of the smile is back, and Skye has become its latest victim.

What to Watch For:  This is a sequel to the 2022 movie Smile.

Word on the Street: Kyle Gallner is the only actor to reprise his role from the 2022 film.

My Take:  With a great promotion campaign including creepy smilers at major sporting events and the VMAs, the horror film Smile became a box office hit in 2022. The 2024 film is also doing the same type of stunts this time, with a ‘Smiler’ showing up again at this year’s VMAs.

We Live in Time

We Live in Time  (2024)

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, October 18, 2024.

Summary: We Live in Time is about an up-and-coming chef (Florence Pugh) and a recent divorcee (Andrew Garfield), who meet under incredible circumstances that bring them together in a decade-spanning look at life, love, and heartache. 

What to Watch For: The film made its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. 

Word on the Street: The movie became an internet meme hit because of a ‘ugly carousel horse’ in a publicity picture with Garfield and Pugh. 

My Take:  Florence Pugh is well known for her online posts of her cooking expertise. 

Brothers

Brothers  (2024)

Release Date:  Premiering on Prime on Thursday, October 17, 2024.

Summary:  In Brothers, two twin brothers, Jady (Peter Dinklage) and Moke (Josh Brolin), are career criminals who have spent most of their lives in and out of jails. Despite Moke’s efforts to reform, he succumbs to Jady’s plan to steal emeralds worth millions. The only problem is they may have to ask their mom (Glenn Close) for help. 

What to Watch For:  The cast includes Marisa Tomei, Brendan Fraser, M. Emmet Walsh, Jennifer Landon and Taylour Paige.

Word on the Street: The film is from director Max Barbakow, known for his award-winning movie Palm Springs (2020).

My Take: This is the late legendary character actor M. Emmet Walsh’s last film appearance.

Woman of the Hour

Woman of the Hour  (2023)

Release Date:  Premiering on Netflix on Friday, October  18, 2024. 

Summary: Woman of the Hour is about Cheryl Bradshaw (Anna Kendrick), a struggling actress who gets a job to appear on a hit national dating show in 1978. Cheryl is unaware that behind the gentle facade, Batchelor Number 3 is a serial killer.

What to Watch For:  The film is based on a true story.

Word on the Street: Besides starring in the film, Anna Kendrick is making her directorial debut. 

My Take: Netflix acquired the film for 11 million dollars after it made its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Stolen Time

Stolen Time  (2023)

Release Date:  In select theaters on Friday, October 18, 2024.

Summary:  The documentary Stolen Time follows elder rights lawyer Melissa Miller as she confronts the corporate for-profit nursing home industry. Miller builds a case to sue facilities for countless tales of neglect, exposing a system wrought with abuse.

What to Watch For: Helene Klodawsky, known for her award-winning documentaries, including No More Tears Sister (2006) and Undying Love (2004), directs the film. 

Word on the Street: The film won the Award of Excellence: Documentary Feature at the 2024 Impact DOCS Awards. 

My Take: The film covers four years of work that Miller did to uncover years of abuse and neglect.

Exhibiting Forgiveness

Exhibiting Forgiveness  (2024

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, October 18, 2024.

Summary: Exhibiting Forgiveness is about Tarrell (Andre Holland), who has found success as an artist using his paintings to find freedom from his troubled past. Just as Tarrell has started to reap the rewards of his hard work, his estranged father (John Earl Jelks), a recovering addict who wants to make amends. Together, they will learn that forgetting might be harder than forgiving.

What to Watch For: The film is from filmmaker Titus Kaphar, a renowned artist whose work is in museums around the country. This is his first feature film.

Word on the Street: The film won Titus Kaphar the Grand Jury Prize in the New Directors Competition at the 2024 Nashville Film Festival.

My Take: The film is currently at an outstanding 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes with over 40 film critic reviews.

Dusty & Stones

Summary: The documentary Dusty & Stones tells the remarkable story of Gazi “Dusty” Simelane and Linda “Stones” Msibi, a duo of struggling country singers from the African Kingdom of Swaziland. The film follows the two as they travel to Texas to compete in a battle of the bands. 

What to Watch For: The film won the Jury Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 2023 Atlanta Film Festival.

Word on the Street:  This was Jesse Rudoy’s directorial debut, a film that won awards at four film festivals.

My Take: I love the duo got to come back in 2023 to appear at several film festivals and play at some sold-out performances. 

Anora

Summary:  In Anora, a sex worker from Brooklyn named Anora (Mikey Madison), meets Ivan (Mark Eidelshtein), who hires her for the weekend. The weekend becomes something more when the two impulsively marry. Little does Anora know that Ivan is the son of an oligarch, and when his family finds out about the marriage, Anora and Ivan are in big trouble.

What to Watch For: Filmmaker Sean Baker won the Palme d’Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.

Word on the Street: Mikey Madison is best known for her role as Max on the TV series Better Things.

My Take: Sean Baker is known for his award-winning films, Tangerine (2015), The Florida Project (2017) and Red Rocket (2021). 

Kensuke's Kingdom

Kensuke’s Kingdom  (2023)

Release Date:   In theaters on Friday, October 18, 2024.

Summary: Kensuke’s Kingdom begins when on a sailboat with his father and brother, Michael and his dog are swept over in a heavy storm and end up on a remote island. Michael must now learn to live on his own, discovering that the world contains both beauty and danger. 

What to Watch For: The film is based on the beloved children’s book of the same name by Michael Morpurgo.

Word on the Street: The Voice cast includes Aaron MacGregor, Sally Hawkins, Cillian Murphy, Ken Watanabe, Raffey Cassidy, and Alfred Kodai Berglund.

My Take: The film has been a big hit on the film festival circuit and won the Best Feature award at the 2024 British Animation Awards.

Goodrich

Goodrich  (2024)

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, October 18, 2024.

Summary: In Goodrich, Andy Goodrich’s (Michael Keaton) life is going into a tailspin. He is about to lose his art gallery, and his second wife has left him and checked into a 90-day rehab program. Andy is left on his own with his young kids. Andy leans on the only person he can think of, his daughter Grace (Mila Kunis) from his first marriage. The problem is that Andy wasn’t a good father to Grace and there is a lot of baggage that they will have to deal with. 

What to Watch For: Writer/director Hallie Meyers-Shyer wrote the part of Andy for Michael Keaton and would not have made the film if he hadn’t said yes.

Word on the Street: This is the second film for filmmaker Meyers-Shyer. Her first film was the 2017 film Home Again, starring Reese Witherspoon.

My Take: One of my favorite actors, Andie MacDowell, plays Andy’s first wife.
