We’re saying goodbye to a cranky superhero and saying hello to a mystery at the Vatican this week at the movies!

Tom Hardy brings his acting talents to play the duo Eddie and Venom in Venom: The Last Dance, as the pair are being hunted by bad guys from both of their worlds.

In Conclave, Ralph Fiennes plays a Cardinal who supervises the vote for the new Pope when he uncovers a tale that could bring down the whole Catholic Church.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: October 21 – 27, 2024

Venom: The Last Dance

Release Date:  In theaters nationwide on Friday, October 25, 2024. 

Summary: In Venom: The Last Dance, Eddie and Venom (Tom Hardy) are on the run, being hunted by both of their worlds, and about to be caught. The duo will have to make a devastating decision that will end their partnership forever. 

What to Watch For: The cast includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Rhys Ifans, Stephen Graham, Peggy Lu, and Alanna Ubach.

Word on the Street: The studio has kept the identity of the actor playing Knull, the bad guy in the film, under wraps.

My Take: I know that Tom Hardy was pushing for an R rating for the film, but it’s rated PG-13.

Conclave

Conclave  (2024)

Rating: PG

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, October 25, 2024. 

Summary: Conclave begins when the Pope has suddenly died, and Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) has been given the task of leading the secretive and ancient voting process of selecting a new Pope. Once the Catholic Church’s most powerful leaders have convened, Cardinal Lawrence discovers a trail of secrets left in the dead Pope’s wake. Secrets that could destroy the Church and get Cardinal Lawrence killed. 

What to Watch For:  The film is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Robert Harris.

Word on the Street: The film was shot in Rome, Italy.

My Take: The cast includes three former Academy Award Nominees: Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow, and Stanley Tucci.

Don't Move

Don’t Move  (2024)

Rating: R

Release Date:  Premiering on Netflix on Friday, October  25, 2024. 

Summary: Don’t Move begins with Iris (Kelsey Asbille), a grieving woman who tries to find solace in an isolated forest. She meets a stranger, who turns out to be a seasoned killer who injects her with a drug that will paralyze her in 20 minutes. Iris must try to get away before her body shuts down.

What to Watch For: Kelsey Asbille is best known for her roles as Monica Dutton on the TV series Yellowstone and Swanee Capps on the TV series Fargo.

Word on the Street: The film is produced by Sam Raimi, known for the Spider-Man movies starring Tobey Maguire.

My Take: I like the trailer for the film, especially how it ends with her timer going off. 

My Name is Alfred Hitchcock

My Name is Alfred Hitchcock   (2023)

Release Date:  In select theaters on Friday, October 25, 2024. 

Summary: My Name is Alfred Hitchcock is a documentary where a fictional Alfred Hitchcock (voiced by Alistair McGowan) gives a lesson on filmmaking the Hitchcock way.

What to Watch For: The film uses clips from his movies, along with his extensive use of storyboarding to examine how Hitchcock constructed a movie.

Word on the Street: The film premiered at the 2023 Glasgow Film Festival.

My Take: Filmmaker Mark Cousins directed award-winning films Life May Be (2014), The Eyes of Orson Welles (2018), and The Storms of Jeremy Thomas (2021).

Your Monster

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, October 25, 2024.

Summary: In Your Monster, life has gone from bad to worse for Laura (Melissa Barrera), as she is just getting over cancer surgery, and her boyfriend (Edmund Donovan) has broken up with her and taken the musical they wrote together away from her. Just when things are going horribly wrong, she meets a terrifying but charming monster (Tommy Dewey) living in her closet. Could this be love…with a monster?

What to Watch For: The musical played at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.

Word on the Street: After appearing in the last two Scream films (Scream, Scream VI) and Abigail, Melissa Barrera is beginning to be labeled a ‘Scream Queen.’

My Take: Your Monster won the Audience Favourite Award at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival: London.

The Remarkable Life of Ibelin

The Remarkable Life of Ibelin  (2024)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, October 25, 2024.

Summary: The documentary The Remarkable Life of Ibelin is about Mats Steen, a Norwegian gamer who loved the World of WarCraft games. Mats succumbed to a degenerative muscular disease at the age of 25. His parents mourned what they thought had been a lonely life until they started receiving messages from his online friends. It turns out that Mats had been leading a life full of friends and adventure on the internet.

What to Watch For: The film has won awards at film festivals around the world, including both the Directing and Audience Awards for Documentaries at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film is considered a front-runner to be nominated for a Best Documentary Oscar.

My Take: The film was just announced as one of the nominees for Best Documentary Feature at the 2024 Critics Choice Documentary Awards.

Canary Black

Release Date:  Premiering on Amazon Prime on Thursday, October 24, 2025.

Summary: Canary Black is about Avery Graves (Kate Beckinsale), the CIA’s best agent. Terrorists kidnap her husband, and Avery must steal a secret program called Canary Black that could start WWIII. Will Avery save her husband and betray her country?

What to Watch For: The film is directed by Pierre Morel, director of Taken (2008) and From Paris with Love (2010).

Word on the Street: Beckinsale made a few headlines when she was seen hanging from a drone above the rooftops of the Croatian capital.

My Take: Kate Beckinsale played one of my favorite roles as Selene in Underworld (2003).

Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band

Release Date:  Premiering on Disney+ and Hulu on Friday, October 25, 2024. 

Summary: The documentary Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the preparations Springsteen and his band made to get ready for their 2023-2024 World Tour.

What to Watch For: The film shows us the rehearsals of a band that hadn’t been together since before the pandemic.

Word on the Street: The film premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.

My Take: I still consider one of the Springsteen concerts I’ve seen as my best concert experience of all time.

Family Pack

Release Date:  Premiering on Netflix on Wednesday, October 23, 2024.

Summary: In Family Pack, a family sits down to play a mysterious board game and are suddenly transported to a medieval land beset by werewolves.

What to Watch For: The film is based on the award-winning game Werewolves of Millers Hollow.

Word on the Street: This is the third film in 2024 starring Jean Reno.  The first two were Lift and My Penguin Friend.

My Take: I will always remember Jean Reno for his role as Leon in the 1994 Luc Benson film Leon: The Professional, which he made with Natalie Portman and Gary Oldman.
