First, we have a new flick by legendary director Robert Zemeckis. Here reunites the duo of Tom Hanks and Robin Wright from 1994’s Forrest Gump in a drama that spans over a century of life in one American home. 

For those craving a courtroom drama, Clint Eastwood is back in the director’s chair with Juror #2, starring the talented Nicholas Hoult. As a juror facing a moral dilemma, Hoult’s character must confront his past while determining the fate of a high-profile murder trial.

Summary: Here is about more than a century of life in one American home, one room, shown to us from one view as we see a tale of love, loss, laughter, family, and life.

What to Watch For: The movie is based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Richard McGuire.

Word on the Street: The camera is in a fixed position and never moves throughout the film.

My Take:  The film is from Academy Award-winning director Robert Zemeckis (Forest Gump), and the cast includes Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Kelly Reilly, Michelle Dockery, and Paul Bettany.

Juror #2   (2024)

Rating:  PG-13

Release Date:  In select theaters on Friday, November 1, 2024.

Summary: In Juror #2, Justin Kemp (Nicholas Hoult), is serving on a high-profile murder trial. Justin faces a moral dilemma that will undoubtedly impact his entire life. Justin is being forced to reexamine a past event that happened to him that could help determine the verdict of the case.

What to Watch For: This is Clint Eastwood’s 40th film he has directed. 

Word on the Street: The film has an all-star cast that includes Zoey Deutch, Kiefer Sutherland, Toni Collette, Gabriel Basso, Francesca Eastwood, Leslie Bibb, J. K. Simmons, and Chris Messina.

My Take: There are rumors that this will be the final film that Eastwood directs. 

Blitz

Blitz   (2024)  

Rating:  PG-13

Release Date:  In select theaters on Friday, November 1, 2024, and streaming on Apple TV+ on Friday, November 22, 2024. 

Summary: Blitz is about nine-year-old George (Elliot Heffernan), who is sent by his mother Rita (Saoirse Ronan) to the countryside via train to escape World War II in London. Defiant and determined, George leaves the train and sets out to return to his family in a city being attacked by constant bombing.

What to Watch For: The film is from Academy Award-winning filmmaker Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave).

Word on the Street: The film was nominated for the Grand Jury Award at the 2024 New Orleans Film Festival. 

My Take: Legendary rock musician Paul Weller (The Jam, The Style Council) plays George’s grandfather.

Release Date:  Premiering on Disney+ on Friday, November 1, 2024. 

Summary: Music by John Williams is a documentary film about the life and work of legendary composer John Williams, who has composed some of Hollywood’s most famous scores.

What to Watch For:  The film has interviews with Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Ron Howard, J. J. Abrams, Seth MacFarlane, Ke Huy Quan, Kate Capshaw, James Mangold, and Chris Columbus.

Word on the Street: The film is from award-winning director Laurent Bouzereau, known for his documentaries Faye, Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind, and Roman Polanski: A Film Memoir.

My Take: The film is up for two Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards, including Best Documentary Feature.

A Real Pain

Release Date:  In select theaters on Friday, November 1, 2024. 

Summary: A Real Pain is about two cousins, David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin), who reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. Their trip will explore tensions that have been simmering for a long time. 

What to Watch For: Jesse Eisenberg wrote, directed, and produced the film.

Word on the Street: The film premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.

My Take: I love that Emma Stone is also a producer on this film. 

Martha

Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Wednesday, October 30, 2024.

Summary: The documentary Martha tells the story of Martha Stewart, who went from teen model to America’s first influencer, a woman who became a billionaire but also went to prison. 

What to Watch For: Stewart gave the filmmaker, R.J. Cutler, access to her personal archives. The film will have never-before-seen photos, letters, and diary entries.

Word on the Street: R. J. Cutler won two Primetime Emmys for Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium (2023) and American High (2001).

My Take: Surely Martha’s pal Snoop Dogg will be in the film.

Chasing Chasing Amy

Summary: Chasing Chasing Amy is a documentary exploring the complex legacy of Kevin Smith’s film, Chasing Amy (1997) and its impact on the LGBTQ+ community.

What to Watch For: The film won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 2024 Charlotte Film Festival.

Word on the Street: Director Sav Rodgers tells how the 1997 film had a profound impact on him coming out as a queer individual.

My Take: I love that Sav Rodgers announced his intent to bring the film to life at a Ted Talk in 2018.

Lost on a Mountain in Maine

Summary:  Lost on a Mountain in Maine is the story of 12-year-old Donn Fendler (Luke David Blumm), who separated from his family by a fast-moving storm, must fight to survive on a mountain alone. 

What to Watch For: The film is based on a book Fendler wrote with writer Joseph B. Egan about his true-life experience.

Word on the Street: Sylvester Stallone produced the film.

My Take:  The film takes place in 1939, always an interesting time to set a film. 

Hitpig!

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, November 1, 2024.

Summary:  Hitpig! takes place in a futuristic cyberpunk world, where Hitpig, a bounty-hunting pig, is on the job to capture an elephant named Pickles.

What to Watch For: The film is based on a story by Berkeley Breathed (who also co-wrote the script), the creator of the comic strip Bloom County, the home of Bill the Cat and Opus.

Word on the Street: The voice cast includes Jason Sudeikis, Lilly Singh, Rainn Wilson, RuPaul, Flavor Flav, and Andy Serkis.

My Take: Berkeley Breathed has been trying to get this film made since 2008 when he published his children’s book Pete & Pickles, which is the basis of the film.

The Gutter

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, November 1, 2024.

Summary: In The Gutter, Walt (Shameik Moore) is a man who has been fired from every job he has had. Somehow, he lands a job at a rundown bowling alley, and it’s discovered that he has a talent for bowling. To save his beloved bowling alley, Walt goes on tour with his friend Skunk (D’Arcy Carden) to win enough money to save it. However, a legendary pro-bowler (Susan Sarandon) has made it her mission to take Walt down.

What to Watch For: The cast includes Kim Fields, Jay Ellis, Jackée Harry, Adam Brody, Rell Battle, Paul Reiser, Paul Scheer,  and Tony Baker.

Word on the Street: The film played at the BFI London Film Festival 2024.

My Take: I am a huge fan of D’Arcy Carden, so I can’t wait to see this film.

Time Cut

Time Cut   (2024)

Release Date:  Premiering on Netflix on Wednesday, October 30, 2024. 

Summary: Time Cut is about Lucy (Madison Bailey), a modern high school senior who stumbles on a time machine and is transported back to 2003, the year her sister was murdered by a serial killer. Lucy must now figure out how to blend in while living in 2003 as she tries to find and stop a serial killer and save her sister. 

What to Watch For: Director/co-writer Hannah Macpherson is known for work on the TV series School Spirits and Into the Dark.

Word on the Street: This is one of the last films that the late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins worked on before she lost her life on the film Rust.

My Take: I love the tagline for the film:  ‘This murder is set on repeat.’
