Summary: Y2K takes place on New Year’s Eve in 1999 when everyone is told that because of Y2K, the world might end. Two best friends, Eli (Jaeden Martell) and Danny (Julian Dennison), go to a party to have fun. Little did they know that when the clock strikes midnight, the party is over.
What to Watch For: The film is directed and co-written by Kyle Mooney, known for his stint on Saturday Night Live.
Word on the Street: The film played at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival and was nominated for the Audience Award.

Nightbitch (2024)

Summary: Nightbitch is about a woman (Amy Adams) who has paused her career to be a stay-at-home mom, but it’s not what she wanted in life. Soon, she feels different, and her life begins changing. She starts to transform into a dog.
What to Watch For: The movie is from filmmaker Marielle Heller, known for her award-winning films The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015) and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019).
Word on the Street: The film is based on the novel of the same name by Rachel Yoder.

Flow (2024)

Summary: In Flow, when a cat’s home is devastated by a great flood, it goes on an adventure to find a new home. Along the way, the cat must team up with other species to find this new world. One of those species is a dog.
What to Watch For: No words are spoken in the film, only the sounds of the animals, which were recorded with real animals.
Word on the Street: The movie is the official submission of Latvia for the ‘Best International Feature Film’ category of the 97th Academy Awards in 2025.
My Take: The film is currently at 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, with over fifty film critic reviews.
That Christmas (2024)
Rating: PG
Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.
Summary: That Christmas is about the small town of Wellington-on-Sea when a snowstorm for the ages threatens to shut the town down, altering everyone’s plans, including Santa’s.
What to Watch For: The film is based on the series of children’s books by Richard Curtis, who wrote the screenplays for Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) and Love Actually (2004).
Word on the Street: The magnificent voice cast includes Bill Nighy, Brian Cox, India Brown, Fiona Shaw, and Jodie Whittaker.
My Take: This is the first feature film that Simon Otto has directed. Otto worked as one of the lead animators on the first two How to Train Your Dragon films.
The Return (2024)

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, December 6, 2024.
Summary: The Return is about Odysseus (Ralph Fiennes), who, after 20 years, has returned home to Ithaca, where he finds his wife (Juliette Binoche) being held prisoner by suitors wishing to be king and his son (Charlie Plummer) facing death.
What to Watch For: The film is from filmmaker Uberto Pasolini, known for his 1998 Oscar-nominated movie The Full Monty.
Word on the Street: This is the third time Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche have worked together on a film. The first two were Wuthering Heights (1992) and The English Patient (1996).
My Take: I love the tagline for the film: Some legends are more than myths.
Unstoppable (2024)

Summary: Unstoppable centers around the life of Anthony Robles (Jharrel Jerome), who was born with one leg but didn’t let him stop him from reaching his dream of becoming a wrestler at the collegiate level.
What to Watch For: The film is based on a true story.
Word on the Street: Jharrel Jerome won the Rising Star Award at the 2024 Middleburg Film Festival.
My Take: The cast includes Jennifer Lopez, Michael Pena, Don Cheadle, Bobby Cannavale, and Mykelti Williamson.
The Order (2024)

Summary: The Order takes place in 1983 when a series of bank robberies and car heists were frightening communities in the Pacific Northwest. Law enforcement was baffled, not knowing who or why the robberies were being committed. One man, an FBI agent (Jude Law) in Idaho, began putting the pieces together and was out to prove he was right.
What to Watch For: The cast includes Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Marc Maron, Jurnee Smollett, and George Tchortov.
Word on the Street: The film premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival.
My Take: I love that Hoult and Law did not talk to each other for the first four weeks of shooting because they were playing characters that were adversaries.
How to Kill Monsters (2023)

Summary: In How to Kill Monsters, Jamie (Lyndsey Craine) is the sole survivor of an attack by a bloodthirsty monster that tore apart her friends in front of her eyes. Jamie must team up with a rag-tag bunch of rookie cops and criminals to defend a police station from an invasion—an invasion of killer monsters from another dimension.
What to Watch For: The movie has been an enormous hit on the horror film festival circuit, winning four awards at the 2023 South African Horrorfest.
Word on the Street: Lyndsey Craine won the Best Actress Award at the 2024 Romford Horror Festival.
My Take: I can’t wait to see this film. It looks like it will be a blast.
The End (2024)

Summary: The End is about a wealthy family, who after surviving the end of the world and spending years alone in an underground salt mine, a stranger shows up to change their world.
What to Watch For: The movie is from Academy Award-nominated director Joshua Oppenheimer (The Act of Killing (2012), The Look of Silence (2014).
Word on the Street: The film is a musical with songs by Josh Schmidt (music) and Joshua Oppenheimer (lyrics).
My Take: The cast includes Tilda Swinton, Michael Shannon, George MacKay, and Moses Ingram.
