A Look at the 6 New Movies Coming Out This Week: ‘A Complete Unknown,’ ‘Nosferatu,’ and More!

Christmas Day is one of the biggest days of the year for theater attendance, and this year, we have a lot of options to choose from!

First up, Timothée Chalamet stars as legendary singer/songwriter Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, telling us his story from when he first arrived in New York City in 1961 to that fateful performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.

Next, we have a horror film with a gothic twist in Nosferatu, starring Lily-Rose Depp as a young woman who is the obsession of a master vampire, played by Bill Skarsgård.

And there are four additional films to choose from if those don’t spark your interest! We have the full list below of all the new movies coming out this week in theaters and streaming!

A Complete Unknown  (2024)

Rating:  R

Release Date:  In theaters nationwide on Christmas Day, 2024.

Summary: A Complete Unknown begins in 1961, when a young man from Minnesota arrives in New York City with only a few clothes and a guitar on his back. That man was Bobby Dylan (Timothée Chalamet), and in just a few short years, he would become a worldwide folk singer sensation. But Bob wanted more, and he was about to set the folk world on fire.

What to Watch For: Timothée Chalamet, Monica Barbaro, who portrays Joan Baez, and Edward Norton, who portrays Pete Seeger, sang all the songs in the film. 

Word on the Street: James Mangold, who directed and co-wrote the film, directed Walk the Line, the 2005 award-winning film about the life of Johnny Cash.

My Take: I love that Chalamet not only learned how to play the guitar and harmonica for the role, but also visited Dylan’s childhood home. 

Nosferatu

Nosferatu  (2024)

Release Date:  In theaters nationwide on Christmas Day, 2024.

Summary: Nosferatu tells the tale of an obsession between a newly married young woman (Lily-Rose Depp) who is haunted by her dreams and a master vampire, Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård), who is so infatuated with her he travels across the ocean to be near her.

What to Watch For: The cast includes Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe.

Word on the Street: This film is based on the classic 1922 silent film by F. W. Murnau, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, which is considered one of the greatest movies of the silent era.

My Take: I love that the exteriors of Count Orlok’s castle were filmed in Transylvania at a castle that once imprisoned Vlad Dracula.

Babygirl  (2024)

Rating:  R

Release Date:  In theaters nationwide on Christmas Day, 2024.

Summary: In Babygirl, a high-powered CEO (Nicole Kidman) has everything she’s ever desired except one thing. She finds it in a torrid affair with her much younger intern (Harris Dickinson).

What to Watch For:  Nicole Kidman won the Best Actress award for the film at the 2024 Venice Film Festival.

What to Watch For: Harris Dickinson is best known for his roles as Carl in Triangle of Sadness (2022), Chase Andrews in Where the Crawdads Sing (2022), and David Von Erich in the 2023 film The Iron Claw.

My Take: Writer/director Halina Reijn is best known for her award-winning film Instinct (2019) and Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022).

The Fire Inside

The Fire Inside  (2024)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date:  In theaters nationwide on Christmas Day, 2024.

Summary: The Fire Inside tells the story of Claressa ’T-Rex’ Shields (Ryan Destiny), a boxer from Flint, Michigan, who, with the help of a local gym owner, Jason Crutchfield (Brian Tyree Henry), trained to become the first American woman in history to win an Olympic gold medal. Claressa realizes that a gold medal doesn’t matter when you’re trying to support your family.

What to Watch For: The film is based on a true story.

Word on the Street: This is the directorial debut of Rachel Morrison, an award-winning cinematographer nominated for a Best Achievement in Cinematography Oscar for the 2018 film Mudbound.

My Take: I have seen the real T-Rex Shields box before, so I can’t wait to see this film based on her life.

ChiefsAholic

Chief$Aholic  (2024)

Rating:  N/A

Release Date:  Premiering on Prime on Tuesday, December 24, 2024. 

Summary: Chief$Aholic is a documentary about a Kansas City ‘superfan, Xaviar Babudar, who went by the name ChiefsAholic and seemed to be everywhere. People wondered how he paid for it all. It turns out he had a secret life as a serial bank robber.

What to Watch For: The film uses interviews with Babudar to give a firsthand perspective on how his obsession drove him to a life of crime.

Word on the Street: The film is directed by Dylan Sires, who also directed the documentary series on Max, Taken Together: Who Killed Lyric, and Elizabeth.

My Take: I am sure you have seen ChiefsAholic at Chiefs games in the past. He was hard to miss in a full wolf outfit decked out in Chiefs gear.

Vermiglio

Vermiglio  (2024)

Release Date:  In select theaters on Christmas Day, 2024.

Summary: Vermiglio tells the story of a remote mountain village in 1944 when a deserter from Sicily arrives and starts a romance with the eldest daughter of a local teacher. It’s a romance that will forever change all their lives.

What to Watch For:  The film is the official submission of Italy for the ‘Best International Feature Film’ category of the 97th Academy Awards in 2025.

Word on the Street: The film won four awards, including the Grand Jury Prize at the 2024 Venice Film Festival.

My Take: The film is from filmmaker Maura Delpero, known for her award-winning 2020 movie Maternal.
