Last Breath  (2025)

Release Date:  In theaters nationwide on Friday, February 28, 2025.

Summary: Last Breath is about a group of seasoned deep-sea divers who battle a rough sea and the odds to try to save a diver stuck hundreds of feet below the ocean’s surface with only 5 minutes of oxygen left. 

What to Watch For: The film is based on a true story. The director of the film, Alex Parkinson, made the documentary Last Breath in 2019, which was about this very rescue mission.

Word on the Street: The cast includes Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu, MyAnna Buring, Finn Cole, Djimon Hounsou, and Cliff Curtis.

My Take: I was on the edge of my seat when I saw the documentary, so I can’t wait to see this film.

Riff Raff  (2024)

Rating:  R

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, February 28, 2025. 

Summary: In Riff Raff, Vincent (Ed Harris) is an ex-con who just wants to spend the holidays in his secluded getaway home with his wife Sandy (Gabrielle Union) and her son DJ (Miles J. Harvey). Instead, everyone is coming to the home with a grudge to bear, including two hitmen (Bill Murray and Pete Davidson) who are on a killing spree that won’t stop until they get what they want.

What to Watch For: The film premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. 

Word on the Street: The film is directed by Dito Montiel, known for his award-winning films, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (2006) and Boulevard (2015).

My Take: I can’t wait to see what Jennifer Coolidge does in the role as the ex-wife of Vincent in the film.

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX: Beginning  (2025)

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, February 28, 2025.

Summary: Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX: Beginning starts during a war between Zeon and Earth Federation, when a stolen prototype Gundam vanishes. Years later, a Newtype girl with mysterious abilities finds herself piloting a new Gundam in underground mech battles while searching for answers about her powers, all while trying to find her place in the world of war.

What to Watch For: The film has been a big hit in Japan, holding the top spot at the box office for several weeks.

Word on the Street: The film is the latest anime set in the “Universal Century” Gundam storyline.

My Take: The film will also be in IMAX theaters.

My Dead Friend Zoe  (2024)

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, February 28, 2025.

Summary: In My Dead Friend Zoe, Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green) is a former U.S. Army Afghanistan veteran whose best friend is fellow vet Zoe (Natalie Morales). The only problem is Zoe is dead, and only Merit can see and hear her. Now Merit has to help her estranged grandfather, Dale (Ed Harris), who is holed up in the family lake house. Dale has begun to lose his way and needs the one thing Merit has a hard time giving: help. 

What to Watch For: The film has been a hit on the film festival circuit, winning seven awards, including the Audience Award at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival.

Word on the Street: Sonequa Martin-Green is best known for her role as Sasha Williams on The Walking Dead TV series.

My Take: Besides the amazing Ed Harris, the cast includes Gloria Reuben, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and Morgan Freeman.

Cold Wallet  (2024)

Rating:  R

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, February 28, 2025.

Summary: Cold Wallet is about three Redditors (Tony Cavalero, Raúl Castillo, and Melonie Diaz) who lose a bunch of money in a crypto scam and decide to get their money back from the person who scammed them by breaking into his home. Things don’t exactly go as planned. 

What to Watch For: The film won an award at Screamfest 2024 and played at the SXSW Film Festival.

Word on the Street: Melonie Diaz is best known for her role as Mel Vera on the CW TV series Charmed.

My Take: Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh is one of the film’s producers.

Ex-Husbands  (2024)

Rating:  N/A

Release Date:  In select theaters on Friday, February 28, 2025.

Summary: Ex-Husbands is about Peter (Griffin Dunne), who has just filed for divorce and is trying to get over his father’s death. Peter heads for a resort in Mexico, not knowing that his son, Nick (James Norton), is at the same resort with his brother Mickey (Miles Heizer) to have a big bachelor party before Nick gets married. It might not be the get together that anyone wants.

What to Watch For: Ex-Husbands premiered at the 71st San Sebastian International Film Festival, where it vied for the Best Film Award.

Word on the Street: The film is directed by Noah Pritzker, known for his films Quitters (2015) and Little Dad (2012).

My Take: A favorite actor of mine, Rosanna Arquette (Desperately Seeking Susan, After Hours, Pulp Fiction), plays Peter’s soon-to-be ex-wife. 

No Address  (2025)

Rating: N/A

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, February 28, 2025.

Summary: No Address is about a group of seven individuals, all living on the streets, who form a family in order to survive gangs, a community that looks down on them, and authorities that want them just to go away.

What to Watch For: The cast includes Ashanti, Beverly D’Angelo, Isabella Ferreira, William Baldwin, Xander Berkeley, Ty Pennington, Kristanna Loken, Patricia Velásquez, and Lucas Jade Zumann.

Word on the Street: The film has won awards at the CineMagic Film Fest and the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival.

My Take: The film is doing some fundraising screenings around the country for organizations involved with homelessness.
