Summary: Mickey 17 is about Mickey (Robert Pattinson), who is unhappy with his life, and so he signs up to be an ‘expendable’, a disposable crew member on a space mission. As an expendable, Mickey is given dangerous tasks because he can be ‘renewed’ if he dies. Two problems: He renews with his memories intact, and something has gone wrong, and now there are two Mickeys.

What to Watch For:  The film is from Academy Award winner Bong Joon-ho (Parasite (2019)).

Word on the Street: The film is based on Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey 7.

My Take:  It’s amazing that Bong Joon-ho kept Robert Pattinson from knowing which Mickey he was playing until just before they shot many of the scenes.

In The Lost Lands

In the Lost Lands  (2025)

Rating:  R

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, March 7, 2025.

Summary: In The Lost Lands follows a powerful witch named Gray Alys (Milla Jovovich) and a hunter named Boyce (Dave Bautista), who journey into a dangerous landscape known as the “Lost Lands” to retrieve a magical artifact for a queen. Gray is the only one who knows that every spell she casts has unimaginable consequences.

What to Watch For:  The film is based on a short story by George R. R. Martin. The story was meant to be the start of a series of stories with Bray and Boyce, but he never completed any more stories.

Word on the Street: Director Paul W. S. Anderson directed his wife, Milla Jovovich, in the Resident Evil series.

My Take: The hope is that this movie will spawn a film series which George R.R. Martin will write more stories for.

Plankton: The Movie

Plankton: The Movie  (2025)

Release Date:  Premiering on Netflix on Friday, March 7, 2025.

Summary: In Plankton: The Movie, Karen the Computer is going to do what Plankton has failed to do over the past twenty-five years: Take over the world. Plankton now has to stop her with the help of a few friends, including one named SpongeBob.

What to Watch For: The voice cast is well-known by SpongeBob fans, including Mr. Lawrence (Plankton), Jill Talley (Karen the Computer), Tom Kenny(SpongeBob), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick), Mary Jo Catlett (Mrs. Puff), Lori Alan (Pearl), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy), and Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs).

Word on the Street: Director Dave Needham’s first film was the 2021 The Loud House Movie. 

My Take: The film is written by Kaz, Stephen Hillenburg, and Mr. Lawrence, and is based on a story by Mr. Lawrence.

Queen of the Ring

Queen of the Ring  (2024)

Release Date:   In theaters on Friday, March 7, 2025.

Summary: Queen of the Ring is about Mildred (Emily Bett Richards), a small-town single mother who, in the 1930s, when pro wrestling for women was illegal, defied the law and became a star, defeating almost every man she faced.

What to Watch For:  The film is based on a true story.

Word on the Street: Emily Bett Richards is best known for her role as Felicity Smoak on the TV series Arrow.

My Take: The movie did well on the film festival, winning the Best Feature Film at the 2024 Twin Cities Film Festival.

Seven Veils

Seven Veils  (2024)

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, March 7, 2025.

Summary: In Seven Veils, a theater director (Amanda Seyfried) has been tasked with mounting her former mentor and lover’s most famous work, the opera Salome. The past will haunt her as she delves into disturbing memories that may lead to madness.

What to Watch For: The director of the film, Atom Egoyan, put on a production of Salome in a theater, and the film was shot using the same sets as the stage production.

Word on the Street: Amanda Seyfried previously worked with Egoyan on the 2009 film Chloe.

My Take: Seven Veils was nominated for three 2024 Vancouver Film Critics Circle awards.

Night of the Zoopocalypse

Night of the Zoopocalypse  (2024)

Summary: Night of the Zoopocalypse takes place when a meteor unleashes a virus that turns zoo animals into zombies, a wolf and a mountain lion team up to rescue the zoo and stop a deranged mutant leader from spreading the virus.

Summary: In Picture This, Pia (Simone Ashley) is a struggling photographer who receives a prediction: true love and career success await her on her next five dates. The only problem is her ex (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) has reappeared, throwing her love life and career into a big mess.

What to Watch For: Simone Ashley is best known for her role as Lady Kathani ‘Kate’ Bridgerton in the TV series Bridgerton.

Word on the Street:  The film is based on the 2024 Australian film Five Blind Dates.

My Take:  I am always up for a good rom-com.

CHAOS: The Manson Murders

Summary: The documentary CHAOS: The Manson Murders is a look into alternative theories surrounding one of the world’s most famous murder cases. Could there be unexpected connections to government agencies involving mind control experiments or a major coverup?

What to Watch For: The film is from Earl Morris, who won the 2004 Academy Award for his documentary The Fog of War.

Word on the Street: The film is based on ‘CHAOS: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties,’ a 2019 nonfiction book written by Tom O’Neill with Dan Piepenbring.

My Take: I can’t wait to see this film, as the Manson murders have always been a fascinating subject.

The Rule of Jenny Pen

The Rule of Jenny Pen  (2024)

Summary: In The Rule of Jenny Pen, a former judge (Geoffrey Rush) after having a stroke, is sent to a secluded rest home, confined to a wheelchair. He becomes the target of a fellow resident (John Lithgow), who torments the residents at night with a child’s puppet, abusing them with deadly consequences.

What to Watch For: The film premiered at Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX, in 2024.

Word on the Street: Lithgow and Rush shared the Best Actor award at the 2024 Sitges Film Festival.

My Take: The film has gotten great word of mouth from horror fans.

Rule Breakers

Summary: Rule Breakers takes place in Afghanistan, where educating girls is seen as an act of rebellion. One woman (Nikohl Boosheri) dares to teach young women to dream, and when their robotic team draws global attention, their success sparks hope and, unfortunately, opposition in their home country. 

What to Watch For: The film is directed by Bill Guttentag, a two-time Oscar winner (Twin Towers (2003) and You Don’t Have to Die (1989)).

Word on the Street: The film was shot in Morocco and Afghanistan.

My Take: This is the first film Angel Studios is releasinh with a PG rating.
