And if you’re in the mood for something uniquely entertaining, Novocaine follows Jack Quaid as a literally unstoppable hero who can’t feel pain, racing to save his crush from bank robbers.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: March 10 – 16, 2025

The Electric State

Release Date:  Premiering on Netflix on Friday, March 14, 2025. 

Summary: The Electric State takes place after a robot uprising. Following their defeat, robots were sent to a fenced-in area known as The Electric State in the American West. Michelle (Millie Bobby Brown) is determined to find her long-lost brother in The Electric State and is helped by a low-rent smuggler (Chris Pratt) and a wisecracking robot named Herman (Anthony Mackie). The duo are about to discover that maybe the world was mistaken about the robots.

What to Watch For:  The film is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, known for  Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. 

Word on the Street:  The film’s cast includes Ke Huy Quan, Jason Alexander, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, Giancarlo Esposito, and Stanley Tucci.

My Take:  The film is loosely based on the graphic novel by Simon Stålenhag.

Black Bag

Black Bag  (2025)

Rating:  R

Release Date:  In theaters nationwide on Friday, March 14, 2025.

Summary: In Black Bag, Kathryn (Cate Blanchett) and her husband, George (Michael Fassbender), have a perfect marriage. Except for the fact that they are both intelligence agents that can’t talk about their jobs. When Kathryn is suspected of betraying her nation, George faces the ultimate test: loyalty to his loving wife or his country.

What to Watch For: The film is directed by Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Erin Brockovich, Sex, Lies and Videotape).

Word on the Street: This is the second film to be released in 2025 that Steven Soderbergh has directed. The other is Presence (2025).

My Take: One of my favorite actors, Pierce Brosnan, plays the head of the intelligence agency that the husband and wife work for.

Novocaine

Novocaine  (2025)

Rating: R

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, March 14, 2025. 

Summary: Novocaine is about Nathan Caine (Jack Quaid), who has finally found the courage to ask Sherry (Amber Midthunder) out, and their date was incredible. Now, right in front of Nathan’s eyes, the bank that she works at is held up, and she is taken hostage. What’s a guy to do but go to her rescue? What her kidnappers don’t know is that Nathan has a condition where he is incapable of feeling pain. To bring her back, he will need it.

What to Watch For: Jack Quaid is best known for his role as vigilante Hughie Campbell in the TV series The Boys.

Word on the Street: This is the fifth film that co-directors Dan Berk and Robert Olsen have worked on. 

My Take: Jack Quaid does the voice of Ensign Brad Boimler on one of my favorite TV shows, Star Trek: Lower Decks.

The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie  (2024)

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, March 14, 2025.

Summary: In The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, who does Earth turn to when there is an alien invasion? Porky Pig and Daffy Duck, of course.

What to Watch For: The voice cast includes Eric Bauza (Daffy Duck/Porky Pig), Candi Milo (Petunia Pig), Peter MacNicol (The Alien Invader), along with Wayne Knight, Laraine Newman, and Fred Tatasciore.

Word on the Street: The film premiered at the 2024 Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

My Take: The film’s director, Peter Browngardt, has said that the movie’s premise was based on Sci-Fi films of the 50s. 

Opus

Opus  (2025)

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, March 14, 2025.

Summary: Opus is about Ariel (Ayo Edebiri), who has been picked to attend the first concert by iconic musician Alfred Moretti (John Malkovich), who is going to perform for the first time in thirty years. The only problem: Ariel may have to join Alfred’s cult before he will perform. 

What to Watch For: This is the film debut of director Mark Anthony Green, known for his award-winning work in the fashion industry.

Word on the Street: The film premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.

My Take: Ayo Edebiri won an Emmy for her performance as Sydney on the TV series The Bear.

Young Hearts

Young Hearts  (2024)

Release Date:  In select theaters on Friday, March 14, 2025. 

Summary: Young Hearts is about Elias (Lou Goossens), a 14-year-old from the Belgian countryside who forms a friendship with his new neighbor, Alexander (Marius De Saeger). Alexander is from the big city and has a lot to teach Elias. Elias starts to develop feelings for Alexander and has to decide how to handle them. 

What to Watch For: The film won two awards at the 2024 Out on Film Festival, including Best Narrative Feature.

Word on the Street: Before the success of Young Hearts at film festivals, director Anthony Schatteman was known for his award-winning short films.

My Take: I love the farm used in the film is the director’s stepmother’s farm.

Prisoners of Fire

Prisoners of Fire  (2025)

Release Date:  In select theaters on Friday, March 14, 2025.

Summary: Prisoners of Fire is a documentary about the Dude fire in Arizona, which killed 6 prisoner wildfire firefighters. The firefighters were on their first fire, and mistakes were made that could have been prevented.

What to Watch For:  This is the first feature film for writer/director Scott Briggs.

Word on the Street: The film played at the 2025 Zions Indie Film Festival and the 2025 Utah Film Festival.

My Take: The film uses interviews of survivors and firefighters to share their experiences as inmate firefighters.

Borderline

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, March 14, 2025.

Summary: Borderline is set in Los Angeles in the 1990s. Sofia (Samara Weaving) is a famous pop star whose home is broken into by Duerson (Ray Nicholson), an obsessive fan who believes they are getting married. It’s going to be a wedding that they both will never forget.

What to Watch For: The film is written and directed by Jimmy Warden, who wrote the cult hit Cocaine Bear (2023).

Word on the Street: Samara Weaving is married to Jimmy Warden.

My Take: I love the tagline for the movie: ‘You’re cordially invited to a violently romantic comedy.’

The Actor

Summary: The Actor is the story of Paul (André Holland), an actor from New York who experiences amnesia in 1950s Ohio. He becomes stranded in a strange small town where all he wants is to get back home and reclaim his memory and life.

What to Watch For: The cast includes Gemma Chan, Tracey Ullman, May Calamawy, Asim Chaudhry, Joe Cole, Fabien Frankel, Olwen Fouéré, Edward Hogg, Toby Jones, Youssef Kerkour, Simon McBurney, Tanya Reynolds, and Scott Alexander Young.

Word on the Street: The film is based on the 2010 novel Memory by Donald E. Westlake.

My Take: Ryan Gosling was originally slated to star in the film but stayed on in the role as executive producer.

The Parenting

Summary: In The Parenting, Rohan (Nik Dodani) and Josh (Brandon Flynn) are hosting their respective parents in a weekend country house rental. Things go downhill quickly when they discover the presence of a 400-year-old evil entity. 

What to Watch For: The outstanding cast includes Parker Posey, Vivian Bang, Lisa Kudrow, Dean Norris, Brian Cox, and Edie Falco.

Word on the Street: The film is written by Ken Sublette, who since 2007 has been a writer for Saturday Night Live.

My Take: I have been a fan of Parker Posey since her breakout role in the 1995 cult classic Party Girl.

Control Freak

Control Freak  (2025)

Release Date:  Premiering on Hulu on Thursday, March 13, 2025. 

Summary:  Control Freak revolves around Val (Kelly Marie Tran), a motivational speaker whose TED talks have become legendary for inspiring thousands to take control of their lives. Val’s fans are unaware that she is a tangled mess of anxiety that has caused her scalp to itch constantly. What Val at first chalks up to stress, the constant itching becomes something evil, an evil that will take Val onto the edge of madness.

What to Watch For: Kelly Marie Tran is best known for her role as Rose Tico in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

Word on the Street: Writer/director Shal Ngo won the Best Director Award at the 2022 Newport Beach Film Festival for his movie, The Park.

My Take: Kelly Marie Tran voiced the lead role of Raya in the 2021 animated film Raya and the Last Dragon.
