New Movies Coming Out This Week: March 24 – 30, 2025

A Working Man

A Working Man  (2025)

Release Date:  In theaters nationwide on Friday, March 28, 2025.

Summary: A Working Man is about Levon Cade (Jason Statham), who left his former profession to work a simple construction job and care for his daughter. Levon uses his skills as a former legendary figure in the world of black ops when his boss’s teenage daughter disappears. Levon discovers that his search for the missing college student will lead him to a sinister criminal conspiracy.

What to Watch For:  David Ayer, who also directed Statham in the fun and bold 2024 film The Beekeeper directed the film.

Word on the Street:  The film was co-written by director David Ayer and Sylvester Stallone.

My Take: This is the second film written by Sylvester Stallone that stars Jason Statham. The first was the 2013 film Homefront.

The Woman in the Yard

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, March 28, 2025.

Summary: In The Woman in the Yard, a mysterious woman dressed in black repeatedly appears in Ramona’s (Danielle Deadwyler) yard. No one knows who she is, but when confronted, she has a chilling message for the inhabitants of the house.

What to Watch For: Filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra is known for his horror films, including Orphan (2009) and The Shallows (2016).

Word on the Street: This is the first feature film for screenwriter Sam Stefanak. He is best known for being a staff writer for the TV series F is for Family.

My Take:  The tagline for the film is:  “Don’t Let Her In.”

Death of a Unicorn

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, March 28, 2025.

Summary: Death of a Unicorn is about a father, along with his daughter, who visit his billionaire boss on a retreat which is on a wildlife preserve. During their stay, they come across a sight they never imagined was alive: a unicorn. Some at the retreat want to kill it, while others want to save it. No one knows how much danger each one of them is in.

What to Watch For: The film stars Jenna Ortega, Paul Rudd, Will Poulter, Téa Leoni, and Richard E. Grant.

Word on the Street:  Jenna Ortega is an executive producer on the film. 

My Take:  This is Téa Leoni’s first feature film role in fourteen years. Her last film role was in the 2011 film Tower Heist.

Holland

Release Date:  Premiering on Amazon Prime on Thursday, March 27, 2025.

Summary: In Holland, Nancy Vandergroot (Nicole Kidman) is living a perfect life in Holland, Michigan, with her husband (Matthew Macfadyen) and son (Jude Hill). However, Nancy suspects something is wrong in Holland and that it might be her husband. 

What to Watch For:  The film premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Audience Award. 

Word on the Street: The film is from filmmaker Mimi Cave, who directed the award-winning 2022 film Fresh.

My Take: The cast includes Gael Garcia Bernal, Rachel Sennott, Lennon Parham, and Jeff Pope.

Number One on the Call Sheet

Release Date:  Premiering on Apple TV+ on Friday, March 28, 2025.

Summary: Number One on the Call Sheet is a two-part documentary on the experiences of Black actors in Hollywood.

What to Watch For: Part One is directed by Reginald Hudlin and is about Black leading men in Hollywood. Shola Lynch directs Part Two, which is about Black leading women in Hollywood.

Word on the Street: The film is produced by Jamie Foxx and Kevin Hart.

My Take:  Executive producers of the film include Halle Berry, Viola Davis, Whoopi Goldberg, and Angela Bassett. They are also interviewed about their experiences as actors in Hollywood in Part Two.

Bad Shabbos

Bad Shabbos  (2024)

Release Date:  In select theaters on Friday, March 28, 2025.

Summary: Bad Shabbos is about an engaged interfaith couple who are about to have their parents meet for the first time over a Shabbat dinner. The only problem is that there is a dead body in their apartment, and the parents are due any minute.

What to Watch For: The film won the Audience Award at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival and was the opening night film for the 2025 Atlanta Jewish Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The cast includes Jon Bass, Milana Vayntrub, Meghan Leathers,  Kyra Sedgwick, Method Man, Ashley Zukerman, David Paymer, Catherine Curtin, Josh Mostel, Theo Taplitz, and John Bedford.

My Take: Milana Vayntrub is best known for her role as Lily in the AT&T television commercials. 

The Penguin Lessons

Summary: The Penguin Lessons is about Tom (Steve Coogan), a British man teaching English to privileged teen boys in 1976 Buenos Aires while a military coup is happening. Tom reluctantly rescues a Magellanic penguin stranded on a beach because of an oil slick. Little does Tom know that the penguin is going to change his life.

What to Watch For: The film is based on a memoir by Tom Michell.

Word on the Street: The film premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. 

My Take: Filmmaker Peter Cattaneo is best known for his films, The Full Monty (1997) and Military Wives (2019).

The Ballad of Wallis Island

Summary: In The Ballad of Wallis Island, Charles (Tim Key) is an eccentric millionaire who won the lottery twice and bought an island where he lives alone. He has invited his favorite performer, folk musician Herb McGwyer (Tim Key), to play a gig for a few hundred fans on his island. What Herb doesn’t know is that the concert is just for Charles, and he has also invited Herb’s old singing partner and former girlfriend, Nell (Carey Mulligan), to perform. It was a partnership that did not end well.

What to Watch For: The film is based on an award-winning short film by James Griffiths, who has turned the story into a feature film.

Word on the Street: The Ballad of Wallis Island premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.

My Take: The film is currently at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, with over 25 film critic reviews. 

Audrey's Children

Audrey’s Children  (2024)

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, March 28, 2025.

Summary: Audrey’s Children takes place in 1969 Philadelphia when British physician Dr. Audrey Evans (Natalie Dormer) has just joined the staff at a children’s hospital. Audrey will battle sexism, medical conventions, and the interference of the staff to develop a treatment for a deadly cancer that was killing 90% of children treated.

What to Watch For: Not only did Dr. Evans develop a successful treatment for Neuroblastoma, but she also co-founded the Ronald McDonald House charity.

Word on the Street: The film’s Screenwriter, Julia Fisher Farbman, co-created and hosted the Amazon series Modern Hero, where she profiled Dr. Evans.

My Take: Natalie Dormer is best known for her role as Margaery Tyrell on the TV series Game of Thrones.

The Life List

Release Date:  Premiering on Netflix on Friday, March 28, 2025.

Summary: The Life List is about Alex (Sofia Carson), whose mother (Connie Britton) has just died and, in a last wish on a DVD, has given Alex a list that Alex made of life goals when she was a teenager. Whenever Alex completes a task on her list, she is given another DVD with a message from her mother. It’s a journey where lifelong dreams take Alex to unexpected places.

What to Watch For: The film is based on the novel of the same name by Lori Nelson Spielman.

Word on the Street: The cast includes Kyle Allen, who plays the lawyer who guides her through her mother’s wishes; Sebastian de Souza, who plays a colleague and potential boyfriend on the quest, and José Zúñiga, who plays Alex’s estranged father.

My Take: Sofia Carons is best known for her role as Evie in the Descendants TV movie series.

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad, Road Trip

Summary: Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Road Trip begins when 11-year-old Alexander (Thom Nemer) and his family go on an epic road trip to Mexico City that almost immediately goes wrong when they find a cursed idol. No matter what they do, they can’t get rid of the idol or the bad luck until they return the idol to its rightful place. It’s going to be a long trip.

What to Watch For: The cast includes Eva Longoria, Paulina Chávez, Harvey Guillén, Cristo Fernández, Alexander Alayon Jr., and Cheech Marin.

Word on the Street: This is a remake of the 2014 film Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, starring Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner.

My Take: Director Marvin Lemus is best known for his award-winning TV series Gentefied.
