The Amateur

Release Date:  In theaters nationwide on Friday, April 11, 2025. 

Summary: The Amateur is about Charles (Rami Malek), a cryptographer who works for the CIA. When terrorists brutally kill his wife, Charles asks to be trained for field work so he can hunt down the people who killed her. When turned down, Charles goes rogue and begins a quest to find everyone responsible and exact vengeance and revenge.

What to Watch For: The outstanding cast includes Jon Bernthal, Julianne Nicholson, Rachel Brosnahan, and Laurence Fishburne. 

Word on the Street: This is a remake of the 1981 film The Amateur, which starred John Savage and Christopher Plummer.

My Take: The film’s director, James Hawes, is known for directing TV shows Penny Dreadful and Black Mirror. 

Drop

Drop  (2025)

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, April 11, 2025.

Summary: In Drop, Violet (Meghann Fahy) is a widowed mother who has finally found the courage to go on her first date in years. The date takes a terrifying turn when she receives messages on her phone, “drops,” threatening the death of her child if she doesn’t kill her date (Brandon Sklenar).

What to Watch For: The film is from Christopher Landon, known for his movies Happy Death Day (2017) and We Have a Ghost (2023).

Word on the Street:  The film premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival. 

My Take: Meghann Fahy is best known for her Emmy-nominated role as Daphne Sullivan in the TV series The White Lotus.

Warfare

Warfare  (2025)

Rating:  R 

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, April 11, 2025.

Summary: Warfare is a film that takes place in real-time as a Navy SEAL team goes on a mission through insurgent territory during the 2006 Iraq War. The team becomes under attack while occupying a house, and it looks like they have only a slight chance of escaping.

What to Watch For: The film is based on a true story and is co-written and directed by Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland (Civil War). Mendoza was one of the soldiers that day.

Word on the Street: The film stars an ensemble cast that includes D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Joseph Quinn, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Taylor John Smith, Michael Gandolfini, Adain Bradley, Noah Centineo, Evan Holtzman, Henry Zaga, and Charles Melton.

My Take: The film was shot in sequence, so that the actors could experience what the soldiers experienced that day in order of how it happened. 

Sacramento

Sacramento  (2024)

Rating:  R

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, April 11, 2025.

Summary: Sacramento is about Glenn (Michael Cera) who is married to Rosie (Kristen Stewart) and about to have their first child. Who shows up in their backyard one day, hanging from a tree? Glenn’s long-time free spirted friend, Rickey (Michael Angarano), who has shown up to spend time with Glenn. That hang turns into a road trip to Sacramento that will change their lives. We just don’t know if that change will be for the best.

What to Watch For: Besides co-starring in the film, Michael Angarano co-wrote the script and directed the film.

Word on the Street: The film was nominated for the Best U.S. Narrative Feature award at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival.

My Take: I find it interesting that Angarano and Stewart dated for a few years in the early 2000s. 

Secret Mall Apartment

Secret Mall Apartment  (2024)

Rating:  N/A

Release Date:  In select theaters on Friday, April 11, 2025.

Summary: Secret Mall Apartment is a documentary about eight friends who, in 2003, created a secret apartment inside a busy mall and lived there for almost four years. 

What to Watch For:  The apartment has electricity, furniture, and a secretly constructed a brick wall with a locked door. The crew smuggled in over 2 tons of cinder blocks to construct their apartment.

Word on the Street: The film has been a massive hit on the film festival circuit, winning the Audience Award at the 2024 Calgary International Film Festival.

My Take: I can’t wait to see how they did this, creating a living space of over 750 square feet and getting away with it for four years.

G20

G20  (2025)

Release Date:  Premiering on Amazon Prime on Thursday, April 10, 2025. 

Summary: In G20, 20 of the most powerful leaders gather in Cape Town, South Africa, for the G20 summit. U.S. When terrorists attack and take over the summit, President Danielle Sutton (Viola Davis) has no choice but to defend her family and rescue her fellow leaders.

What to Watch For:  The film was shot on location in South Africa.

Word on the Street: The cast includes Anthony Anderson as the First Gentleman, Marsai Martin as the President’s daughter, Ramón Rodríguez as a Secret Service agent, and Clark Gregg as the Vice President.

My Take: I love the poster for the film with Viola Davis in a red dress with weapons in each hand.

The King of Kings

The King of Kings  (2025)

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, April 11, 2025.

Summary: The King of Kings is an animated film about the famous author Charles Dickens telling his son the story of Jesus Christ.

What to Watch For: The voice cast includes Pierce Brosnan, Oscar Isaac, Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, Mark Hamill, Forest Whitaker, and Ben Kingsley.

Word on the Street: This is the first animated film from Angel Studios, known for their films Sound of Freedom (2023), Homestead (2024), and the TV show The Chosen.

My Take: I didn’t know that Charles Dickens wrote the book The Life of Our Lord, which the film is based on. He wrote the book for his children and read it to them every Christmas.

Pets

Pets  (2025)

Release Date:  Premiering on Disney+ on Friday, April 11, 2025. 

Summary: Pets is a documentary about the bond between humans and animals. The unique relationship is told in stories between pet owners and their beloved animals, whether they be dogs, cats, birds, pigs, horses, or goats.

What to Watch For:  The film is directed by Bryce Dallas Howard.

Word on the Street:  This is the twelfth project that Bryce Dallas Howard has directed, including the documentary Dads (2019).

My Take: The film has a fantastic tagline: A Different Breed of Love Story.

That They May Face the Rising Sun

Summary: That They May Face the Rising Sun is set in a 1980s rural community in Ireland where Joe (Barry Ward) and Kate (Anna Bederke) Rutledge have returned to live and work in the land where Joe grew up. The film chronicles the story of a year in their life and all the characters they encountered while there.

What to Watch For: The film is based on the award-winning novel of the same name by Irish writer John McGahern.

Word on the Street: The film won the Best Film award at the 2024 Irish Film and Television Awards.

My Take: Director Pat Collins is best known for the 2012 award-winning documentary Silence.

One to One: John & Yoko

One to One: John & Yoko  (2025)

Release Date:  Premiering exclusively in IMAX on Friday, April 11, 2025. 

Summary: One to One: John & Yoko is a documentary set in 1972 New York as John Lennon gets ready for his last full-length concert, a special-needs children fundraiser called the One to One Charity Concert. 

What to Watch For: The film uses never-before-seen home movies, recorded phone calls, as well as remastered footage from the concert itself.

Word on the Street: John & Yoko’s son, Sean Ono Lennon, remixed the concrete footage audio.

My Take:  The film is premiering at the Venice Film Festival and is being shown exclusively in IMAX theaters.
