New Movies Coming Out This Week: April 21 – 27, 2025
The Accountant 2 (2025)

Release Date: In theaters nationwide on Friday, April 25, 2025.
Summary: Our favorite math wizard is back in The Accountant 2. Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) is a math savant who gets along better with numbers than people. He works as a freelance accountant for some of the world’s most dangerous criminal organizations. This time, Christian is using his unique mind and a few illegal methods to find out who killed an old acquaintance. It’s going to get messy, so Christian has called in someone he hasn’t worked with in a long time, his brother Brax (Jon Bernthal). That’s if Brax takes his phone call.
What to Watch For: This is a sequel to the 2016 film The Accountant.
Word on the Street: The film won the Headliner Audience Award at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival.
My Take: The same writing/directing team from The Accountant, Bill Dubuque and Gavin O’Connor, are back for this film.
Until Dawn (2025)
Rating: R
Release Date: In theaters on Friday, April 25, 2025.
Summary: In Until Dawn, a group of friends visit an old visitor center, looking for clues why a relative vanished a year ago. Instead of discovering the mystery, they get trapped inside a time loop. They are chased and killed by mysterious foes, only to come back to life over and over. In order to escape their fates, the group must survive until dawn.
What to Watch For: The film is an original story based on the video game of the same name.
Word on the Street: Ella Rubin, who plays Clover, is hot off her role as Vera in Sean Baker’s film Anora.
My Take: I love that the director, David F. Sandberg, appears in the film in a picture of missing persons from the area.
Havoc (2025)
Rating: TV-MA
Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, April 25, 2025.
Summary: Havoc is about Walker (Tom Hardy), a hard-nosed detective who investigates a drug deal that went bad. Walker must fight his way through the criminal underworld to rescue a politician’s estranged son. Walker may have to take on the entire city, as the busted drug deal is part of a dark web of conspiracy and corruption.
What to Watch For: The film is from Gareth Evans, the award-winning director of The Raid: Redemption (2012) and The Raid 2 (2014).
Word on the Street: Evans and Hardy produced the film.
My Take: With a cast that includes Jessie Mei Li, Timothy Olyphant, Luis Guzman, Justin Cornwell, and Forest Whitaker, this should be a fun film to watch.
The Legend of Ochi (2025)
Rating: PG
Release Date: In theaters on Friday, April 25, 2025.
Summary: The Legend of Ochi takes place on the island of Carpathia, where children are taught to not go outside after dark because of the dangerous and reclusive creatures known as the Ochi. When a girl named Yuri (Helena Zengel) finds a lost and injured baby Ochi, she sets off on a journey to return the baby to its family.
What to Watch For: Isaiah Saxon, directing his first feature film, is known for directing music videos for artists such as Grizzly Bear, Panda Bear, and Björk.
Word on the Street: The film made its World Premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.
My Take: The film used a mix of puppetry, animatronics, computer animation, and matte painting to bring the Ochi to life.
Neighborhood Watch (2025)
Rating: R
Release Date: In theaters on Friday, April 25, 2025.
Summary: In Neighborhood Watch, Simon (Jack Quaid) witnesses the abduction of a young woman and reports it to the police. The only problem is Simon has a history of mental illness, and no one will believe him. Simon turns to his next-door neighbor, Ed (Jeffery Dean Morgan), a former security guard, and this unlikely pair are on the case.
What to Watch For: Quaid and Morgan worked together on the TV series The Boys and looked for a film they could be paired up for.
Word on the Street: Director Duncan Skiles drew inspiration from two 80s films, Midnight Run and Something Wild.
My Take: I am looking forward to this film, as I am a big fan of the horror film that Skiles directed, The Clovehitch Killer (2018).
Cheech and Chong’s Last Movie (2024)
Rating: R
Release Date: In theaters on Friday, April 25, 2025.
Summary: Cheech and Chong’s Last Movie is a documentary examining the five-decade career of the comedy duo Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong. The duo transitioned from performing stand-up to creating best-selling comedy albums and then massive Hollywood films, influencing the culture all along the way.
What to Watch For: David Bushell, who produced the films Eternal Sunshine Of the Spotless Mind (2004), Deception (2008), and the Dallas Buyers Club (2013) directs the film.
Word on the Street: The film features never-before-seen footage of their concert shows and interviews.
My Take: The film has a great tagline: Bring a bud.
On Swift Horses (2024)

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, April 25, 2025.
Summary: On Swift Horses begins when Muriel’s (Daisy Edgar-Jones) fiancé, Lee (Will Poulter) comes back from the Korean War, and are starting a new life in California. Their lives are uprooted when Lee’s brother, Julius (Jacob Elordi), shows up and starts causing problems. Julius is always in trouble, which will cause Muriel and Lee to have more problems than they can handle.
What to Watch For: The film is based on the Shannon Pufahl novel of the same title.
Word on the Street: The film made its World Premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival and was soon bought by Sony Pictures.
My Take: The film was nominated for the First Feature Award at the 2025 Miami Film Festival.
The Trouble with Jessica (2023)

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, April 25, 2025.
Summary: The Trouble with Jessica begins when Richard (Rufus Sewell) and Beth (Olivia Williams) are invited for dinner at the London home of Tom (Alan Tudyk) and Sarah (Shirley Henderson). They bring along a third uninvited guest, Jessica (Indira Varma), a friend from their university days whose memoir has become the talk of the town because of its scandalous nature. The night falls apart when Jessica is found in the backyard, having committed suicide. There goes their property value.
What to Watch For: The film was the winner of the Special Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2023 Dinard Festival of British Cinema.
Word on the Street: Director Matt Winn is known for his award-winning 2015 horror film The Hoarder.
My Take: I am a huge fan of Alan Tudyk, especially for his role as Hoban “Wash” Washburne on the cult TV series Firefly.
Magic Farm (2025)

Summary: In Magic Farm, an American documentary crew is on its way to interview a musician in rural Argentina but ends up in the wrong town. With the locals’ help, they decide to fake a new music trend. They had no idea what they were getting into.
What to Watch For: The cast includes Joe Apollonio, Chloë Sevigny, Camila Del Campo, Alex Wolff, and Simon Rex.
Word on the Street: The movie is from Amalia Ulman, the award-winning director of El Planeta (2021).
My Take: The film was nominated for Best Feature Film at the 2025 Berlin International Film Festival.
