A Look at the 6 New Movies Coming Out This Week: ‘Karate Kid: Legends,’ ‘Bring Her Back,’ and More!

Curious about the new films coming out this week? We’ve got a nostalgic franchise revival and a fresh horror flick!

First up, Karate Kid: Legends is bringing together Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, expanding the beloved martial arts universe with a new protégé story set after the Cobra Kai series finale.

Meanwhile, Danny and Michael Philippou follow up their breakout horror hit Talk to Me with Bring Her Back, a psychological thriller that’s already earning critical acclaim at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The week’s slate also features Jesse Armstrong’s directorial debut, Mountainhead, starring Steve Carell, Netflix’s first South Korean animated feature, Lost in Starlight, and a samurai revenge tale set in 18th-century Britain with Tornado.

New Movies Coming Out This Week:  May 26, 2025 – June 1, 2025

Karate Kid: Legends

Release Date:  In theaters nationwide on Friday, May 30, 2025

Summary: In Karate Kid: Legends, Li Fong (Ben Wang) has been studying Kung Fu under Mr. Han (Jackie Chan). Li and his mother are forced to move to New York after a family tragedy uproots them from their home in Beijing. Li tries to fit in but trouble keeps finding him and he enters a karate competition to change his path, and Mr. Han arrives to help but sees that Li needs the skill of a karate master. They ask for help from no other than Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio). 

What to Watch For:  This is the sixth film in The Karate Kid franchise and is set after the events of the Cobra Kai TV series.

Word on the Street: In a recent interview, Ralph Maccio says the film takes place three years after the Cobra Kai series.

My Take: Ben Wang was in the 2024 film Mean Girls and was the lead in the Disney+ series American Born Chinese. 

Bring Her Back

Bring Her Back  (2025)

Rating:  R

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, May 30, 2025.

Summary: Bring Her Back is about Andy (Billy Barratt), who has just lost his father and therefore, he and his younger disabled sister, Piper (Sora Wong), go to live with a foster mother, Laura (Sally Hawkins), and her foster son Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips). From the start, things begin to become strange, and Andy soon realizes that he and his sister are in danger.

What to Watch For:  The film is from the directing duo of Danny and Michael Philippou, who brought us the award-winning horror hit Talk to Me (2022).

Word on the Street: The film is currently at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, with over 55 film critic reviews.

My Take: I thought Talk to Me was the best horror film of 2022, so I am eager to see this one.

Mountainhead

Mountainhead

Rating:  TV-MA

Release Date:  Premieres on HBO Max on Saturday, May 31, 2025. 

Summary: In Mountainhead, four billionaires (Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Ramy Youssef, and Cory Michael Smith) are getting together in a remote mountain mansion to have a boy’s weekend with drinks, snowmobiles, poker, and fun. Their weekend is interrupted when they discover that an AI social media platform developed by one of the billionaires is responsible for the world coming apart at the seams. 

What to Watch For: This is the first feature film directed by Jesse Armstrong, known for his screenplays In the Loop (2009), Four Lions (2010), and TV series Fresh Meat, Veep, Black Mirror, and The Old Guys. 

Word on the Street: The film has had an incredible turnaround, having just been filmed in Park City, Utah, in March of this year.

My Take: Armstrong is best known as the creator of the incredibly popular TV series Succession, which has won 19 Primetime Emmy awards.

Bono: Stories of Surrender

Bono: Stories of Surrender  (2025)

Rating:  N/A

Release Date:  Premieres on Friday, May 30, 2025 on Apple TV+

Summary: Bono: Stories of Surrender traces rock star Bono’s life from his humble beginnings in Ireland to his international fame as the lead singer of U2.

What to Watch For:  The film features unseen footage from his Beacon Theater performance of ‘Stories of Surrender.’

Word on the Street: The singer gives insight into some of U2’s most famous songs, such as Vertigo, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, and Sunday, Bloody Sunday. 

My Take:  I love the tagline: “These are tall tales of a short rock star.”

Tornado

Tornado  (2025)

Rating:  R

Release Date:  In select theaters on Friday, May 30, 2025. 

Summary: Set in Britain in the 1790s, Tornado tells the story of a young Japanese woman named Tornado (Koki), who travels the country with her father’s (Takehiro Hira) traveling puppet show. When the two cross paths with a gang of ruthless criminals led by Sugarman (Tim Roth) and his son, Little Sugar (Jack Lowden), Tornado’s father is killed, and she escapes into the countryside. Little does the gang know that Tornado’s father was a Samurai who trained his daughter in the ways of the sword, and she has now vowed revenge.

What to Watch For: The movie is from filmmaker John Maclean, known for his award-winning 2015 Slow West.

Word on the Street:  The film had its world premiere at the 2025 Glasgow Film Festival,

My Take: I am a huge fan of Samurai films and can’t wait to see this one!

Lost in Starlight

Lost in Starlight  (2025)

Rating:  PG

Release Date:  Premieres on Netflix on Friday, May 30, 2025.

Summary: Lost in Starlight is set in Seoul in 2050, where Nan-young dreams of following in the footsteps of her late mother and becoming an astronaut. Her mother failed to return to Earth after a mission to Mars, and Nan-young longs to go to Mars, hoping to find a trace of her mother. Jay, a musician, comes into her life just as her dreams are beginning to come true. Will someone who has always dreamed of the stars stay on Earth to be with the one she loves?

What to Watch For: This is Netflix’s first animated film from South Korea.

Word on the Street: Critics compare the film to the beloved Japanese 2016 animated film Your Name. 

My Take:  Academy Award-winning director Bong Joon Ho (Parasite) has described the movie as a ‘visual masterpiece.’
