Ballerina

Release Date:  In theaters nationwide on Friday, June 6, 2025.

Summary: In Ballerina, Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas) was lost and alone when her father was cut down by an assassin’s hand. She is found by a man who sees she is in trouble and takes her to a ballet school. However, the school is a facade, and Eve is beginning her training in the assassin traditions of the Ruska Roma.

What to Watch For:  The film takes place between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019) and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023).

Word on the Street:  Keanu Reeves returns as our favorite kick-ass, dog-loving action hero, John Wick. Also returning is Ian McShane as Continental manager Winston, and Anjelica Huston as the ballerina assassin instructor, The Director.

My Take: Eve’s back tattoo, seen in the movie poster, says “Lux In Tenebris,” meaning “Light in Darkness.”

The Phoenician Scheme

The Phoenician Scheme  (2025)

Rating:  PG-13

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, June 6, 2025. 

Summary: The Phoenician Scheme is about wealthy businessman Zsa-Zsa Korda (Benicio Del Toro), who has survived plane crashes and attempts on his life by rivals, so he knows his days are numbered. He appoints his only daughter (Mia Threapleton), a nun, as the sole heir to his vast estate. As Korda embarks on one last venture, he and his daughter will have to deal with scheming tycoons, foreign terrorists, assassins, and a few distraught family members.

What to Watch For:  The film is directed by Wes Anderson (Isle of Dogs, The Grand Budapest Hotel) and co-written with Roman Coppola.

Word on the Street: The outstanding cast includes Michael Cera, Willem Dafoe, Stephen Park, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Scarlett Johansson, Bill Murray, Hope Davis, Benedict Cumberbatch, Riz Ahmed, and Murray F. Abraham.

My Take: This is the sixth feature film co-written by Anderson and Coppola.

The Life of Chuck

The Life of Chuck  (2024)

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, June 6, 2025. 

Summary: The Life of Chuck explores the life and adventures of Charles Krantz (Tom Hiddleston), a man who is experiencing the end of his life while being celebrated by his friends and family.  

What to Watch For:  This is a film from the mind of Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Doctor Sleep) and is based on a Stephen King short story. 

Word on the Street: The cast includes Mia Sara, Karen Gillan, Nick Offerman, Carla Gugino, Molly C. Quinn, Jacob Tremblay, and Mark Hamill. 

My Take: The film is told in reverse chronological order, beginning with his death and progressing through the key moments of his life.

Dangerous Animals

Dangerous Animals  (2025)

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, June 6, 2025. 

Summary: Dangerous Animals takes place off the coast of Australia, where surfer Zephyr (Hassie Harrison) has traveled to ride the waves. She encounters Moses (Josh Heuston), who persuades her to join him on a boat excursion to swim with sharks. Little do the two know that the captain of the tour boat (Jai Courtney) plans to feed the sharks with more than just chum.

What to Watch For: The film was shot on location on the Gold Coast, Queensland. 

Word on the Street: Unusual for a horror film, the movie had its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. 

My Take: Hassie Harrison is best known for her role as Laramie on the hit TV series Yellowstone.

Straw

Straw  (2025)

Release Date:  Premieres on Netflix on Friday, June 6, 2025. 

Summary: Straw is about a single mother (Taraji P. Henson) with a sick child who is being pushed to the brink. Her path is filled with obstacles in a system that offers no support. Now, she makes a stand that could have drastic consequences.

What to Watch For: The film is written and directed by Tyler Perry.

Word on the Street: The cast includes Teyana Taylor, Sherri Shepherd, Sinbad, Glynn Turman, Ashley Versher and Rockmond Dunbar.

My Take:  The film was shot in Atlanta, Georgia, at the Tyler Perry Studios. 

Predator: Killer of Killers

Release Date:  Premieres on Hulu on Friday, June 6, 2025.

Summary: Predator: Killer of Killers is the story of three warriors throughout history, a Viking, a Samurai, and a World War II pilot, who take on Predators who have hunted humans for sport.

What to Watch For: This animated anthology film is from Dan Trachtenberg, who directed the 2022 Predator prequel Prey.

Word on the Street:  This is the 8th film in the Predator franchise.

My Take:  I am a huge fan of both Prey (2022) and the original 1987 film Predator.

White with Fear

Release Date:  Streaming on VOD starting Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

Summary: The documentary White with Fear explores the quest of America’s conservative political machine by exploiting racial fault lines and fueling the flames of white victimization.

What to Watch For: The film interviews Stephen Bannon, Hillary Clinton, Rick Gates, Aasif Mandvi, Brian Stelter, and Eddie S. Glaude Jr.

Word on the Street: The film is directed by Andrew Goldberg, known for his documentaries Armenia, My Home (2024), The Jewish Journey; America (2015), and A Yiddish World Remembered (2004).

My Take: The film is currently at over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. 

The Ritual

Release Date:   In theaters on Friday, June 6, 2025. 

Summary: The Ritual is about two priests, Theophilus (Al Pacino) and Joseph (Dan Stevens), as they attempt to put aside their differences and their past to save a possessed young woman (Abigail Cowen).

What to Watch For: The film is based on a true event, the most documented exorcism in American history. 

Word on the Street: The film is based on the 1935 book, Begone Satan!.

My Take: The film is from filmmaker David Midell, known for his award-winning 2019 film The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain.

Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye

Release Date:   In theaters on Friday, June 6, 2025. 

Summary: Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye follows Momo, a high school girl from a family of spirit mediums, and her classmate Okarun, an occult fanatic. One believes in ghosts, the other in UFOs. Together, they will acquire the ability to fight against paranormal forces.

What to Watch For:  The film is based on the popular manga by Yukinobu Tatsu.

Word on the Street: The film is a follow-up to Dan Da Dan: First Encounter.

My Take: The Japanese singer Aina the End performs the title song.

I Don't Understand You

I Don’t Understand You  (2024)

Release Date:   In theaters on Friday, June 6, 2025. 

Summary: In I Don’t Understand You, Dom (Nick Kroll) and Cole (Andrew Rannells) are married and about to adopt a baby. To celebrate their 10th anniversary, they travel to Italy. Their biggest problem isn’t that they don’t know where they are going or that they don’t speak Italian; it’s what happens when things go very badly in a small family restaurant in the country.

What to Watch For: The film was a big hit on the film festival circuit, premiering at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film is directed by a married couple, David Joseph Craig and Brian Crano.

My Take: Brian Crano is known for directing the TV series Simply Plimpton, which David Joseph Craig starred in.
