Summary: How to Train Your Dragon is a tale about Vikings and dragons, who are mortal enemies on the isle of Berk. That is until Hiccup (Mason Thames) meets a hurt Night Fury dragon that he names Toothless. Little do the two know that their future together means that they will save the lives of both species.

What to Watch For: This is a live-action adaptation of the 2-time Academy Award-nominated 2010 animated film.

Word on the Street: Gerard Butler reprises his role as Stoick from the 2010 film.

My Take: The animated film was one of my favorite films of the past 15 years, so I look forward to seeing this live-action remake.

Materialists

Materialists (2025)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, June 13, 2025.

Summary: In Materialists, Lucy (Dakota Johnson) is a famous New York City matchmaker who has always been lucky in making the perfect match for others but has been unlucky in love herself. Lucy may have met her perfect match in suave and rich Harry (Pedro Pascal), until her ex, John (Chris Evans), comes back into the picture. What’s a matchmaker to do?

What to Watch For: Celine Song, who was nominated for an Oscar for her 2024 movie, Past Lives, wrote and directed the film.

Word on the Street: Before she became a filmmaker, Celine Song was briefly a matchmaker in New York.

My Take: I always love it when I find out a film was shot on film instead of digitally.

Echo Valley

Echo Valley (2025)

Rating: R

Release Date: Premieres on Apple TV+ on Friday, June 13, 2025.

Summary: Echo Valley revolves around Kate (Julianne Moore), a horse ranch owner in the beautiful and isolated Echo Valley. Her world is shattered when her estranged, drug-addicted daughter, Claire (Sydney Sweeney), shows up at her doorstep in hysterics and covered in someone else’s blood.

What to Watch For: The film is directed by Michael Pearce, known for the award-winning movie Beast (2017).

Word on the Street: Sydney Sweeney watched hundreds of hours of YouTube videos of addicts interviewed on the streets of Los Angeles.

My Take: Sweeney had to learn how to ride a horse for the film.

Deep Cover

Deep Cover (2025)

Rating: R

Release Date: Premieres on Amazon Prime on Thursday, June 12, 2025.

Summary: Deep Cover is about three struggling London improv actors (Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, Nick Mohammed) who are hired by the police for a series of sting operations. Can they say their usual improv phrase “yes, and…” and still survive as they find their way into joining a criminal gang?

What to Watch For: The cast includes Paddy Considine, Sean Bean, Ian McShane, Sonoya Mizuno, and Ben Ashenden.

Word on the Street: Director Tom Kingsley is best known for directing the British TV series Ghosts and Stath Lets Flats.

My Take: The film played at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival.

Titan: The OceanGate Disaster

Release Date: Premieres on Netflix on Thursday, June 11, 2025.

Summary: Titan: The OceanGate Disaster is a documentary about Stockton Rush, whose quest to become the next billionaire inventor led to the development of the Titan, a doomed underwater deep-sea sub that he hoped would bring oceanic exploration to the masses.

What to Watch For: The film will feature audio recordings, footage from the company’s inception, testimonies from whistleblowers, and first-hand accounts of former employees.

Word on the Street: The film is directed by two-time Emmy winner Mark Monroe, known for his work on the documentaries Jim Henson: Idea Man (2024) and Lucy and Desi (2022).

My Take: The film had its world premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival.

The Holy Trinity

Summary: The Unholy Trinity takes place in an 1870s Montana town when Henry (Brandon Lessard) comes to find the gold that his father hid. Henry is caught between a sheriff (Pierce Brosnan), who hung Henry’s father, and a former partner (Samuel L. Jackson) of his father, who will do anything to find the gold that he feels is his.

What to Watch For: The film was shot on location in Montana.

Word on the Street: The cast includes David Arquette, Ethan Peck, Q’orianka Kilcher, Tim Daly, and Veronica Ferres.

My Take: I’m always ready to see a good Western.

Prime Minister

Prime Minister (2025)

Summary: The documentary Prime Minister chronicles Jacinda Ardern’s tenure as New Zealand’s Prime Minister, during which her terms she had to navigate a mass shooting, COVID-19, and giving birth to a first child.

What to Watch For: The film won the Audience Award for Best World Cinema Documentary at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.

Word on the Street: This is the first feature film documentary for co-director Lindsay Utz, who was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards for editing on Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry (2020) and American Factory (2020).

My Take: I am a big admirer of Jacinda Ardern, who, after leaving New Zealand, has been teaching at Harvard.
