Oscars & Golden Globes Hit By Writers Strikes

LATEST: Hollywood’s most celebrated annual awards ceremonies, the Oscars and Golden Globes, are the latest high-profile shows to fall victim to the ongoing writers’ strikes.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has rejected a request for striking members to be allowed to write scripts for the glittering ceremonies, both to be scheduled to take place early next year (08).

Sources at the writers union say a waiver request from the producers of the two big awards shows was turned down late on Monday (17Dec07).

If granted, WGA members would have been free to write scripts for the gala red carpet events.

Instead, they are expected to picket the Golden Globes, which take place on
13 January (08), as well as the Academy Awards, scheduled for 24 February (08), if their dispute over royalties has not been reached by next month (Jan08).

Several A-list stars, including Tom Wilkinson and James McAvoy, are also boycotting the ceremonies in solidarity with the WGA.

The waiver rejection is thought to be part of the writers’ strategy to force studios back to the negotiating table after new talks broke down earlier this month (07Dec07).

Hollywood screenwriters have been on strike since 5 November (07) after the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) failed to agree terms for a new contract that expired in October (07).
