VVVVVV Review: Addictive Challenging Gameplay

VVVVVV Review

VVVVVV is a platformer of the most simple kind. The design is especially simple, but it still has a charm to it that you will enjoy. The gameplay is fairly easy to understand as well, and you will be able to pick it up and play it very quickly. However, the level design, while it may look simple at first, is where the game becomes oh so fun and oh so very frustrating. You are going to die in this game, so much that it keeps track of how many times that you do die – But It’s not so frustrating that you don’t want to play it. In ways it has just the right amount of difficulty that you still laugh it off and have fun with it, but at the same time you want to beat the “stupid area” already. It really is quite fun though and very likable with a good challenge.

In VVVVVV your goal is to find and rescue your missing crew after something has gone wrong with your ship. As you make your way around searching for your missing crew you will be going through obstacles. One of the main features is that you can switch gravity basically from walking on the bottom to being able to walk on the top sections of each area. You will have to do that frequently to get past barriers, as well as to avoid sharp objects of which are your main threat and what will kill you if you run into them. You would think it would be fairly easy to avoid and sometimes it is – However, it most certainly is not when you are jumping into an area you must go into but you can’t see what’s ahead of you before it’s too late. So you must time your jumps to the next part perfectly so that you don’t hit them, or you must make sure you don’t jump too soon as to avoid flying right into the top part that’s covered in sharp objects.

As you continue on in the game even more fun features appear that make the gameplay even more enjoyable. In fact, it is so stupidly challenging that you will still have a good time with it. It does a good job of introducing new features to the gameplay so that it remains fun and fresh. You can also look at it as new features to frustrate you even further, though I don’t want that to sound like a bad thing. Once you pick up the game and start having fun with it you will certainly understand. You will still enjoy almost every moment of it’s gameplay as well even once you understand the “fun” I speak of.

VVVVVV is easily a must own eShop title for those who are fans of platformers or are looking for a good challenge. There will be moments that this game will put a smile on your face, while other moments will drive you absolutely crazy. It has all kinds of different elements that it will eventually present you with as well. As you continue on in the game it will continue to make it well worth your time. This game even has that nice classic sound going for it that you will enjoy as you make your way through it. I would say that this platformer offering is well worth the $7.99 price tag in the eShop!

  1. I like when very hard games acknowledge how hard they are/the fact that you’re going to die many times. This one sounds good and I hope to see more indie titles coming out in the 3DS shop.
