A New Playstation 3 Owner’s Journey

A few months ago, I finally picked up a Playstation 3. It’s a little amusing to me that I now own a Playstation 3. Near the beginning of this generation, around 2006 or so, I didn’t have much interest in owning a Playstation 3. It wasn’t like I disliked Sony or anything, just things were different back then. Early on I bought both a Nintendo Wii and an Xbox 360. I decided on a Xbox 360 over a Playstation 3 for a few reasons. The main reasons for me included the fact all my college friends had one and it had most of the big exclusive 3rd party games. The Xbox 360 being less expensive also help sold the deal. The exclusive 3rd party games were the big selling parts for me… Dead Rising, Mass Effect, Gears of War, Blue Dragon to name a few. The Xbox 360 even started to get games that were normally Playstation 3 exclusive, such as Final Fantasy XIII. So for a long while, there was really no reason for me to consider buying a Playstation 3.

Over time things started to change of course. Some 3rd party games stayed exclusive like Gears of War. But most of the other games, like Dead Rising and Mass Effect, started seeing releases on the Playstation 3. Things also started to turn in favor of the Playstation 3 with it getting unique and great games, most of them being 1st party games, over the years. I would keep hearing how Journey or Uncharted were great games. So my interest slowly started to increase. Even future games like The Last of Us really made me want it. So more and more I started to become interested in a Playstation 3. Especially at this point, I was very much out of college and a lot of my online friends had a Playstation 3 instead of an Xbox 360. Earlier this year I finally decided that I would buy a Playstation 3 at some point when I saw a price drop. Another thing that really interested me was the Playstation Plus program… Being able to get free games and discounts really appealed to me.

Other than some new bundles, the Playstation 3 never really saw a price drop. But even before that announcement, I ended up buying a Playstation 3 around late August. I decided with the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 bundle, which not only included the game, but also a 320 GB HDD for around $260 on sale. I also already played the game, so I ended up selling it for about $32 to Best Buy. Thus I bought a Playstation 3 for around $230. Not bad, not bad at all. Of course, I also needed games. I ended up buying several, all of which were $20 or $30 max. The games I bought include: Grand Theft Auto IV Collection, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, Ico Collection, Journey Collection, Final Fantasy XIII, Demon Souls and Dark Souls. So I had a pretty decent PS3 library with me at the start. Once I had everything set up, I went ahead and got a subscription to Playstation Plus. I luckily signed up at the best time too, as I was able to download Borderlands and loads of other games. It’s funny to think I’ve already used more than 100 GB of space in just free games alone.

Other then the Playstation Plus program, I also enjoyed that Playstation 3 had free online. It may sound strange, but it wasn’t till earlier this year that I was even aware that the PS3 online was free. I likely got so used to Xbox Live that I must have just assumed the PS3 was the same way. I was glad to be wrong. Now a few months later, I’ve generally enjoyed the PS3 service. There are some things I’m not a fan of, such as PSN store being a bit of a mess and the network a little slow when it comes to downloading. But overall I’ve enjoyed the games on the system and some media apps it features.

So anyways, that’s my little experience of being a new Playstation 3 owner. I might just have an experience post for when I pick up a Nintendo Wii U as well. Anyone else have a similar story of only recently purchasing a Playstation 3 or any other system so late in the game?

  1. WOW, what a loser.

You have missed out on all the PS3 exclusives for the last 6 years. What planet have you been on?

Never played GT5? Never played Uncharted 1,2,3? Never played Resistance or Killzone?

Come on, call yourself a gamer?

  2. Well I don’t feel your a loser, though I do feel your doing yourself an injustice by not playing games such as inFamous, Heavy Rain, Uncharted, Killzone, Resistance, LittleBigPlanet, God of War, Twisted Metal, Starhawk or Warhawk and Gran Turismo 5. Obviously a large amount of variety there and at least one of those games I mentioned should suit your fancy.

But yea my story is similar to yours, I purchased a PS3 about 4 months ago after owning a 360 since 2006. Price was definitely a factor in my decision being that I was only 13 and planned on using birthday and holiday money. But I just kept hearing about all the great exclusives on ps3 and I really wanted to try heavy rain so I ended up buying one.

  3. I had i similar story i to was always a aydtation fan but i got a 360 because it was cheap….. And it was just that cheap ive had ps1 and ps2 and i can fix computers and i went through about 2 xbox’s and said to hell with it and gave into temptation and went back to playstation and ive been playen on the same system with the same controller and headset for 6years give or take

  4. Oh don’t worry. I have 2 to 3 times the library now then 2 months ago, including the first 2 Uncharted, Heavy Rain and more. Also have inFamous 2 on my HDD already.

One of the good things about being very late to the PS3 party is all the great games can be gotten both cheap and in bundles now.

  5. Welcome brother! PS3 did have some murky beginnings but they came back in a big way. There is a lot to cheer about if you are a PS3 owner. PSN is great. You should also give PlayStation Home a try. The fact that it is out there (and free) is pretty amazing. So much you can buy out there, but you are never forced to. Spread the word. Game on.

  6. I wanted the PS3 at lanch because my PS1 was my introduction to disc based consoles. And this continued with the PS2. So as soon as I saw an offer on eBay which was the PS3 – X3 Sixaxis controllers – 4 Games New & Sealed I snapped that up sold all the games & controllers & ended up only paying a quarter of the retail price for it. Heavenly Sword, Uncharted 1-3, Killzone 1-3, Resistance 1-3, Infamous 1&2+Festival Of Blood & Heavy Rain. And I noticed games looked and felt better than my Xbox 360 versions too. So now I’m slowly buying my favourite cross platform games too.
