Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 – Looking Into the Wii U Controllers for Multiplayer

For me, Call of Duty is all about the multiplayer experience. I’ve already spent hours upon hours playing Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 multiplayer on the Xbox 360, but now it’s time I give it a go on the Nintendo Wii U. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 multiplayer on the Wii U is exactly the same experience as the other consoles when it comes to gameplay, but the major difference and the question to be considered, is what controller works best to give me a proper Call of Duty multiplayer experience? Of course, it’s all about preference and my desire is for a similar feel in control that I get from the Xbox 360 controls. Automatically you would probably think that the Wii U Pro Controller would be the ideal fit for me, but I still took a quick look into the multiplayer using all four control options and this is what I found.

Wii U GamePad
The Wii U GamePad, with its size, is fairly difficult to handle the control of your shot. It’s just not a natural feel when it comes to aiming the weapon and it can be fairly difficult at times due to the size of the GamePad. My aim can still be pretty spot on, but if I have to make quick and little movements, I sometime end up all over the place and begin spraying and praying. One thing I did do was to adjust the sensitivity way down and that helped me out quite a bit. It kept me from being sporadic when dealing with a moving target and I started to play a lot better. Thankfully, I know the maps very well so I don’t need to make big and quick turns – turning down the sensitivity also keeps you from turning your player quickly. Still, almost every match ended fairly positive for me and I played well with the GamePad after changing the sensitivity. So, it is a fine option for the Call of Duty multiplayer experience, but it wasn’t the best. However, it is awesome to call in kill-streaks by use of the GamePad touchscreen.

Wiimote and Nunchuk
I know a lot of people will say otherwise, but I can’t stand using the Wiimote to shoot anything. I just can’t do it; it’s not my style as I have always been a complete dual analog player and always will be. I did give it a go and I probably could have given it a bit longer, but I just don’t respond well to how it feels. I’m not saying it’s bad, but when you are someone who’s played shooters with dual analog for over 10 years, you won’t deal with change too easily. I also didn’t care for the button set-up of the Wiimote controls. Still, the option is there for those who like it, but for me, no thank you. It seems to work well for those who like it and play better with it. I’ve seen numerous people use the Wiimote while viewing their screens and they seem to handle the controls just fine.

Wii Classic Controller Pro
Now, for the Wii Classic Controller Pro, not the Wii U Pro controller; The Wii Classic Controller Pro gives you your first taste of near perfection for those who prefer dual analog control. With it being a more standard controller, you are able to control your shot a lot easier and be less sporadic like it is with the GamePad. After switching over to this controller, I had some of my best matches yet and I wasn’t all over the place with my shot. If you have this controller and not the Wii U Pro Controller, then you should definitely give it a shot. So, if I like this controller, then surely I am going to love the Wii U Pro controller, right?

Wii U Pro Controller
Oh my! I, being an Xbox 360 Call of Duty fan, can have the perfect Call of Duty experience on the Wii U with the Wii U Pro Controller. I was wondering how the Call of Duty experience was going to be with the GamePad and if I was going to get the same feeling. I didn’t with the GamePad, but thankfully the Wii U Pro Controller is an excellent controller that gives you that usual gaming experience that some of us may need. I’m extremely happy with it and my performance has increased significantly with the use of the Wii U Pro Controller. If you are a Call of Duty fan and want the same experience on the Wii U that you are used to on the other consoles, the Wii U Pro Controller is the way to go!

As I said, I am a dual analog player all the way and don’t really care for the use of the Wiimote. It’s fun for me to use the wiimote every now and then, but not when it comes to online multiplayer. I am sure there are a lot of people who feel the same way as I do, but I also know there are a lot of Nintendo fans who say otherwise and prefer the Wiimote. It’s all a preference and that is simply what I am stating here. Also, I still don’t feel there is much of an advantage to go with one controller over the other. These games are all about knowledge of the maps and typical running routes and camping spots that players use. Once you have that down, you are normally ready for anything.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 multiplayer is just as fun on the Wii U as it is on any other console. You still have typical lag matches and it’s also a lot harder to find a room, especially for me who only plays hardcore. One other thing I’ve noticed is the campers. I can’t believe how many campers there are. I’m not saying that only Wii U owner’s camp, because there are campers everywhere, but it was just surprising to me that I had to deal with someone camping in a back corner in almost every match. I kind of like this because it seems as if most players play slower because of this which slows down the entire flow of the game. You’ll still need to be on your toes and have a quick shot, but the game and its maps almost feel larger because of this style of play that I have witnessed on the Wii U.

One final note I would like to make is that while playing with the Wii U Pro Controller you will still be able to make use of the GamePad controller. You will be able to see the full map that you’re currently playing on and where your team is located on the map. You will also be able to see your kill-streak options and call them in with the use of the GamePad. In addition to that, you will be able to see your classes and change it from the GamePad as well. While my eyes are focused on the main screen nearly 100% of the time, it is nice to place the Wii U GamePad on a stand in front of me so that I may view the map while playing. It’s even better when my team calls in a UAV because I can see the full map and exactly where the other team is located. This is something that makes the Wii U Call of Duty multiplayer experience even better than on the other consoles. It’s certainly a nice feature to have in front of you.

  1. You missed out a control method.

There are two wiimote and nunchuk configurations, one uses motion plus and one just uses the IR pointer/sensor bar. The motion plus configuration is the one that has drawn criticism from people who played the Wii ports of older CoD games and it has no way of adjusting turning speed whereas the non motion plus set up is just fine and would be better considerably better than dual analog if it were not for the huge amount of auto aim given to DA players.
