Dreamgirls Review: Best Vocals In A Play… Quite Possibly Ever.

I hadn’t seen the movie, but I knew that the story and roles had to be nothing short of amazing to have garnered Jennifer Hudson an Oscar for her portrayal of Effie White. And while there were no large names attached to this Dreamgirls tour, it still has the reputation of a show with big voices. And oh did it deliver.

I was thoroughly entertained from the incredible vocals to the astonishing dancing skills of one Chester Gregory (who plays James “Thunder” Early). In all seriousness, this guy could tour as a solo act. His depiction of James is hilarious, lovable and unforgettable. Effie White’s shoes are filled by Moya Angela, who has the most amazing voice I’ve ever heard in a theatrical production. Her emotional songs and amazing vocal range brought the audience to their feet at numerous times throughout the production – something I’ve never witnessed before – at least not until the end of a play.

But to the play itself, Dreamgirls originally hit Broadway in 1981 winning 6 Tony awards and running more than 3 and half years. The play tells the story of the dark side of the music industry. From lying and betrayal to love and ultimately heartache, Dreamgirls is illuminating a story of 3 women which started at the Apollo Theater in 1962. And while the play does paint a dark side to the world of fame and fortune, it also leaves viewers with an important message that will resonate long after you leave the theater…. The strong will survive, no matter the situation.
