Dragon Con 2010: The Costumes, Celebrities, And The Good Times

Dragon Con is a annual convention held in our hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. The convention focuses on many different genres – From comic books to the world of entertainment, Labor Day weekend is something that thousands of people look forward to and plan for each year.

I attended Comic Con in July, and was convinced that I had seen it all in terms of the cons, however, I was wrong. Dragon Con may not have as many panels or celebrities to offer, but what it does have is the most detailed costumes you’ve ever seen. Attendees pour tons of time and sometimes thousands of dollars in costumes that are truly authentic, down to the smallest details. Which brings me to the best part of the convention – simply people watching at 1 of the 4 hotels taking part in the convention.

My friends and I attended 3 nights of the con, visited a couple panels (including one that was completely mislabeled as a Dr. Horrible panel – which ended up being about gay Supernatural fanfic. Didn’t see that one coming! As a fan of Jensen and Jared myself (though not in that way) I found the panel hilarious. However, the other people with me insisted on finding another event that was properly advertising itself. We dropped in on a Firefly party, and a concert put on by Black Tape For A Blue Girl… all equally entertaining. And we of course staked our claim on a corner in a loft bar overlooking the main floor of the Marriott just so we could people watch. You don’t need a badge for the convention to do this, and it’s known as what you do on the Friday and Saturday nights of the convention when you live in Atlanta. Because you’ll never see a sight like this anywhere else.

We also ran into a number of celebrities who were enjoying the costumes just as much as we were. Scott Adsit for one! We also ran into Aaron Douglas from Battlestar Galactica.

And while we didn’t run into him, Mythbusters‘ Adam Savage was walking around in a V For Venedetta costume.

Other celebrities in attendance include: Sean Astin (Lord Of The Rings), Kristin Bauer (True Blood, Daniel Cudmore (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse), John DiMaggio (Futurama), Nelsan Ellis (True Blood), Michelle Forbes (True Blood), Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Summer Glau (Firefly), Doc Hammer (Venture Brothers), Luke Perry (90210), Sendhil Ramamurthy (Heroes, Covert Affairs), Brandon Routh (Superman Returns, Scott Pilgrim), Kevin Sorbo (Hercules), Chaske Spencer (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse), Jewel Staite (Firefly), Sam Trammell (True Blood), Laura Vandervoort (Smallville, V), and Billy West (Futurama) just to name a few.

It may not have as much Hollywood power as Comic Con, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Living in Atlanta all my life, it’s kinda embarrassing that I hadn’t checked out this event until now. But now that I have, I’m hooked… and can’t wait for Labor Day Weekend 2011.

  1. Wow! You look like you had an awesome time! The costumes are so hilarious! Cross your fingers I’ll be there next year – maybe even in costume – hmmmm…

  2. I love the difference in the photos. Thats funny. He also did that thing male celebrities do where when they take a picture with a guy they are a little further back (whereas yours is side by side) and they look far away. I have one with Bill Hader where he was far back and it was close up of me and it looks like I have a huge head and he has a tiny little head.

  3. It was a great convention! I wish they did this every weekend in Atlanta. It’d be amazing 🙂

    Thanks for the comments!! 🙂
