Interview: Jessica Louise Origliasso & Lisa Marie Origliasso from The Veronicas

We had the pleasure of interviewing the talented Jessica Louise Origliasso and Lisa Marie Origliasso of The Veronicas. Here’s what they had to say:

Can you tell me a little bit about how you guys became The Veronicas and what drew you to the music industry?

We started performing at a very young age. Our dad was in a band, and we always grew up around music.. So it was already a big influence in our lives. By the time we were 16 we started songwriting together, and signed a publishing deal by the time we were 18. We traveled the world writing in different countries, and learning a lot from different songwriters. It was kind of like songwriting boot camp.. And we learnt a lot about different ways of finding inspiration for, in and around music.. That reaches further than just “that boy who pissed me off” haha. But we love those songs too 😉

You have the new album coming out this fall. Can you talk a little bit about your musical growth with this new album and your previous work?

The Secret Life Of was a reflection of where we were in our lives personally and musically at the time. It’s been 3 years since we released that, and with this recent record, Hook Me Up took form naturally for us in an electro rock feel. It’s something we were/are influenced by in life right now. We loved experimenting with different synth sounds.. And samples.. As well as Sting and orchestral sounds that we didn’t get a chance to do on TSLO to make this album a dramatic piece of art.

What is the song writing process like for you? Does it start with lyrics or a melody?

Writing for us is about evoking passion and emotion good or bad in yourself, or someone else. There is no formula. It can come in any form at anytime, anywhere. That’s the beauty in song writing.. And sure, there are people who sit in there rooms trying to figure out a formula to a hit song.. But honestly… What’s the fun in that?

What’s your favorite song on the new album?

Haha, that’s like asking what family member you love the most. It’s hard to choose, it can vary depending on the day. Right now Lisa loves “Untouched” and “Revenge Is Sweeter”.. And Jess likes “Take Me on the Floor” and “All I Have.”

What’s craziest fan experience you all have had?

There are so many! It’s kind of crazy when people get our names tattooed on them. I mean, we are all up for body ink… But that’s insane [laughs]!!

What bands/singers are you guys listening to right now?

A lot of different stuff. Old school N’Sync, The Vines, Carney, The Dandy Warhols, Dallas Green, The Cure and meditation music.

When you’re on the road, what do you do to pass the time between gigs?

Shop [laughs]! And we hang out with our band.. We take photos, and we are always busy doing design stuff for our clothing line.

Do you have any backstage traditions before you go on?

A chant.. And Lis and I have a big cuddle.

You guys have a very original style when it comes to clothing. Can you talk about some of your favorite places to shop and your favorite designers?

We both have different styles.. But we both swear by going through vintage stores.. the ones with sooo much stuff that it takes a whole day just to sort through. That’s where you find the real gems.. Then once you’ve found your special pieces.. You can pair it with some designer things for a more glam look. For example.. I just bought these amazing little red “pin-up inspired” shorts for $10 from Aardvarks on Melrose in Los Angeles.. And this cool white long sleeved shirt for $6.. And paired it with my awesome D&G designer high heels. It’s all about contrast and dressing fun for us. We love themes, and experimenting. It’s boring to play it safe. Life is too short!

Can you talk a little bit about the inspirations behind the clothing line that you guys have? And can we expect to see that in the States any time soon?

We would love to bring it to the States! It’s a mix of our style in the form of cute t-shirts.. Gorgeous skirts, dresses and shorts! A lot of nautical styles, and cool tattoo art inspired designs.

We love attention to detail, so all the buttons are either themed.. With love hearts, or skulls.. Or there are glitter studs that run down the seams. We like to think it’s glam rock and roll, for the casual life style!

Do you all have any favorite TV shows that you can’t miss?

The L Word!

What does the rest of this year hold for you all?

So much! Our album will be out on September 16! Which is soo exciting for us. We are going to be touring a lot till then.
