2012 MTV Video Music Awards Roundup: The Winners, The Performers, And More!

The big winners at the MTV Video Music Awards last night were One Direction. The bang scooped up three awards at the event.

Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Niall Horan won Most Share-Worthy Video, and Best Pop Video for their track ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ and Best New Artist.
The boys dedicated their Best Pop Video gong to their fans and joked about their clumsy ways after a mishap.

Niall told the audience: “This one’s for our fans, you’re amazing. This one’s for you.”

Other notable happenings at the event – Chris Brown and Rihanna had a onstage kiss.

The former couple – who split up in February 2009 after he assaulted her in a car – hugged when he won the Best Male Video prize at the event at the Staples Centre, and she appeared to peck him on the cheek to congratulate him.

Rihanna herself picked up the biggest award of the night, Video of the Year, for ‘We Found Love’.

She recently confessed to still having feelings for Chris and said she found it hard to act normally around him whenever they saw each other.

In other news, Taylor Swift dived into the crowd during her performance at the VMAs.

The 22-year-old singer closed the ceremony last night with a performance of her new single ‘We Are Never Getting Back Together’, for which she was joined by a troupe of dancers in brightly-coloured casual outfits and sunglasses.

Taylor – who arrived at the ceremony in a white tuxedo but switched to a red and white striped T-shirt, tiny denim shorts and red brogues for her performance – began by singing into a mock studio before stepping out onto the stage for a high energy routine, which she finished with her leap into the audience.

The ‘Love Story’ hitmaker had earlier admitted she was nervous about the performance.

She said: “You get really nervous. It’s a mixture of all these emotions of excitement of nerves of planning, of making sure that you have enough rehearsal time, know all your blocking … because the thing about the VMAs is, the people that help put together the performances are honestly some of the best people you have ever worked with and they put together these huge, vast, massively entertaining performances.”

Taylor wasn’t the only star to wow the crowd at Los Angeles’ Staples Center with a dazzling performance.

Pink took to a flying trapeze to sing ‘Blow Me (One Last Kiss)’, while triple-award winners One Direction ascended from beneath the stage to perform ‘One Thing’ on a raised platform.

In contrast, Frank Ocean gave a stripped-down rendition of ‘Thinking Of You’, accompanied only by a guitarist.

  1. This years’s show was so boring, for some reason everything felt just dull. Nicki Minaj didn’t deserve anything., i’ve seen youtubers make better music videos.
So nice to see Ezra Miller and Emma Watson though 🙂

  2. Yeah the VMAs aren’t nearly as good as they used to be. 10 years ago they were a must-see! Now it’s just something I read about afterwards 🙂
