Gravity Wins Big at 2014 Oscars While Ellen DeGeneres Breaks Twitter

Gravity and Dallas Buyers Club were the big winners of the evening at the 2014 Oscars, but it was 12 Years a Slave which took home the biggest award of the night – Best Picture.

12 Years a Slave also picked up awards for Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o and Best Adapted Screenplay for John Ridley. Dallas Buyers Club picked  up both Best Actor for Matthew McConaughey and Best Supporting Actor for Jared Leto, while Cate Blanchett took home the Best Actress title for her star turn in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine.

However, it was Gravity which scored the most wins of the night – seven awards in total. The film picked up Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron along with a string of technical awards for sound, cinematography, visual effects and more.

Ellen DeGeneres hosted the event and during the show stated that she wanted to break the record for most “retweets” of a photo, prompting her to get Bradley Cooper to take a photo of her with Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Spacey, Angelina Jolie, and Brad Pitt. The tweet did disrupt Twitter for more than 20 minutes after 10 p.m. EST. The tweet has currently 2.7 million retweets.

  1. Wow! With the exception of Best Supporting Actress you pretty much nailed the major categories in your predictions in January. Good call!

  2. I know! 🙂 I was pretty pleased with my predictions. And overall, I feel like everyone that won – deserved to win. I still would have liked to see ‘Her’ get more nominations – but overall I’m a happy camper.

    I do find it amusing that Gravity – the least technically accurate movie (because apparently it’s meant to be taken literally) won the most technical awards. haha 🙂 It was a beautiful film though!
