‘Divergent’ Overtakes ‘The Muppets’ at the U.S. Box Office

Sci-fi blockbuster Divergent took the number one spot at the North American box office with a strong $56 million opening.

The movie adaptation of Veronica Roth’s dystopian novel, which stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James, scored the second biggest opening of the year, behind The Lego Movie‘s $69 million in February.

Shailene Woodley recently chatted with FanBolt about what she hoped that young audiences would take away from Divergent opening weekend, “I think that there’s a lot. One of them is that you don’t need to be co-dependent. Think of the difference between, one is that you don’t have to be co-dependent in a relationship. You don’t need somebody to need you, you can be an empowered, strong individual and you can have another empowered strong individual and you guys can be partners. Then you can base your relationship on fundamentals of trust and pride and respect, which I think is really beautiful and a neat thing to have in a young adult franchise.”

Disney family movie The Muppets Most Wanted debuted in second place with $16.5 million and Mr. Peabody & Sherman fell to third with $11.7 million.

Rounding out the top five were 300: Rise of an Empire with $8.7 million and faith-based movie God’s Not Dead earning $8.6 million.
