Interview: Devon Sawa From ‘Nikita’

After making his first appearance in ‘The Guardian,’ Devon Sawa became an instant favorite of Nikita fans everywhere. Since then, he’s just kept coming back. This week’s ‘Into The Dark’ marks Sawa’s fourth appearance as rogue Division agent Owen, who was Nikita’s (Maggie Q) second ally in the fight against the spy organization. To mark the occasion, he sat down with me to talk about the experience of Nikita.

Let’s get the basic question out of the way first: what brought you to the role of Owen?

The action. I was all about that. When they said there’s this show called Nikita and there’s a lot of action, I said, “Sign me up. I’m in.” And that Maggie Q’s in it.

Was it always planned that you’d become a recurring character? Did you have any idea that you’d be this well received?

No. When I first heard about Nikita, Owen was planned to come in for two, maybe three episodes, and now here we are with four. Owen’s a cool character. When Craig [Silverstein] and the writers explained it to me, I said, “He’s cool.” I can see why people are into him.

It has to be kind of cool to be the first character, other than Alex, to join Nikita’s side. Now between Owen, Ryan and Michael, she’s got a whole team.

It is.

What’s in store for Owen in this upcoming episode?

I’ve been getting into a little trouble over in London. [Owen] needs Nikita’s help. He’s a little obsessed with making up for the trouble he got into with Division. He’s got this new element to him that is kind of clouding his judgment.

You mentioned your interest in action. You do a lot of your own stunt work. How have the stunt sequences on Nikita been for you?

They’re amazing. I come in early and we rehearse with a very great stunt team. At the end of the day, you’re a little sore but it’s worth it. It’s a lot of fun.

Is this your last episode?

I hope not. You never know. I’d like to do some scenes with Alex [Lyndsy Fonseca]. An Owen/Alex team-up would be pretty cool. Owen and Michael doing some stuff. There’s so many places that they could take Owen.

Who’s your favorite Nikita character other than your own?

Well, the show is called Nikita, but other than Nikita? Alex. Or maybe Percy. Or Birkhoff. The whole team. It’s really a strong cast, which is why it’s such a great show. There’s no weak link.

What TV shows are you watching?

So many shows. The Walking Dead is a big one for me right now. I’m a big UFC guy. A little bit of Dr. Phil. That’s my guilty pleasure.

Any other projects that we can look forward to?

I did a movie with Nick Stahl called 388 Arletta Avenue. It’s really a cool movie, coming out this fall.

My thanks to Devon Sawa for this interview! Check him out when Nikita returns tonight at 9 PM ET/PT on The CW.
