George R. R. Martin Offers to Write Fans into New ‘Game of Thrones’ Book
Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin has set up a donation site for a wolf sanctuary near his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico – and he’s offering up some pretty crazy prizes for those who donate freely.
The grand prize, worth $20,000, gives a few lucky fans the opportunity to be written into the next installment of Martin’s series.
He or she will be able to choose their “character’s station in the world (lordling, knight, peasant, whore, lady, maester, septon, anything), and you will certainly meet a grisly death!”
All proceeds from donations go to Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary and the Food Depot of Santa Fe, both of which are very close to Martin’s heart. He even has his own wolf gang – the Westeros Pack – that roams the sanctuary.
In the short time that the donation site has been live, two people have already claimed the top prize. Other prizes include one of Martin’s trademark “old Greek sailor caps,” flying out to have breakfast with the author, and handwritten notes.
Jill Gentry, development director for the food bank towards which half of Martin’s proceeds will go, speaks highly of the A Song of Ice and Fire creator to ABC News:
“They’re very real. You can talk to them like absolutely normal people. You don’t have to roll out the red carpet, as though you’re talking to somebody well above you. His wife, Parris, is so passionate about feeding children. It’s just like talking to your neighbor.”
Martin’s campaign has a goal of reaching $200,000 by August 4.
