After 18 years of marriage, Spy Kids actor Antonio Banderas and Working Girl‘s Melanie Griffith have decided to divorce.
A statement from the couple’s representative reads:
“We have thoughtfully and consensually decided to finalize our almost twenty years marriage in a loving and friendly manner honoring and respecting each other, our family and friends and the beautiful time we have spent together.”
The pair first met on the set of 1995 flick Two Much, and there was instant attraction despite the fact that both performers were taken at the time. Over 10 years ago, Banderas recalled to ABC News:
“We tried as much as we could to be respectful. We just thought this may be one of those, you know, infatuation moments that we have when we shoot movies because we got to play together a couple, so let’s just go home.”
After the relationships in question dissolved, Griffith and Banderas wed in 1996. The former star even has Antonio’s name tattooed on her right arm.
Griffith’s divorce documents request child support and sole physical and joint legal custody – even though the couple’s only child, Stella, turns 18 in a few months.
This is Banderas’ second divorce and Griffith’s fourth. Sources close to the couple report that the split is amicable.
