Benedict Cumberbatch Joining ‘Doctor Who’

Benedict Cumberbatch is rumored to be in talks to bring The Master back to Doctor Who. Cumberbatch, best known for BBC’s Sherlock and roles in last year’s War Horse and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, is said to be preparing to bring the character onto the show’s upcoming season.

Doctor Who and Sherlock are both the work of Steven Moffat, who is the lead writer/executive producer on Who and the co-creator of Sherlock.

The Master is one of the Doctor’s greatest enemies, a fellow Time Lord from Gallifrey who can regenerate into different forms and has been played by several actors. The character first appeared in 1971 and has been played by the likes of Roger Delgado, Anthony Ainley, Eric Roberts, Derek Jacobi and John Simm. The show’s returns later this year with Matt Smith reprising his role as the Doctor in his eleventh incarnation.
