Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Takes #1 Spot at Box Office

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has rocketed to the #1 spot at the box office, earning a stellar $94 million in its opening weekend.

The superhero film, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Vin Diesel, easily beat last week’s top film Lucy, which falls to number two with $18.2 million.

Coming in at number three is James Brown biopic Get On Up, starring Chadwick Boseman as the late Godfather of Soul, earning $14 million.

Rounding out the top five are Hercules with $10.7 million and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, grossing $8.7 million.

It was announced last week at Comic-Con that the sequel is scheduled for release on July 28, 2017.

Pratt, who had to bulk up for the role, recently told the New York Post he would jump at the chance to reprise his part as Peter Quill, a mercenary who has to team up with a group of misfits to secure his freedom and save the world after stealing a mysterious orb.

He said, “I’d be thrilled to do (a sequel). I’m just going to sit back and eat chicken and do bench presses and wait by the phone.”

Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy is FanBolt’s pick for best film of summer 2014. It’s the perfect blend of comedy and action.
