‘The Leftovers’ Renewed for Second Season

The season finale of HBO’s new series The Leftovers hasn’t aired yet, but that didn’t stop the network from announcing that the show will return for a second season next year.

The series, based on a novel by Tom Perrotta and created by Perrotta and Damon Lindelof of Lost fame, portrays the lives of a group of people in a small town following an event that resulted in the unexplained disappearance of 2% of the world’s population.

In a statement, HBO programming chief Michael Lombardo said, “We are thrilled to bring back The Leftovers for a second season with the exceptional talents of Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta [on whose bestselling novel the series is based]. It has been truly exciting to see the overwhelming response to their provocative and original storytelling. We look forward to continuing the journey as the show delves deeper into the lives of those who remain.”

The season 1 finale of The Leftovers airs September 7 on HBO.
