‘Outlander’ Inspiration Frazer Hines Joins Series

The beloved British TV star who inspired Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novels has landed a pivotal role in the new Starz adaptation.

Actor Frazer Hines will portray Sir Gordon Fletcher, the English warden of Wentworth Prison in Scotland in the time-traveling Highlands drama.

According to Starz, Outlander follows the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743, where she is immediately thrown into an unknown world where her life is threatened. When she is forced to marry Jamie Fraser, a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, a passionate relationship is ignited that tears Claire’s heart between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

Author Gabaldon has revealed Hines’ portrayal of Scottish Doctor Who companion Jamie McCrimmon in the 1960s gave her the spark to write her Outlander books, which recently launched as a TV series, starring Nell Hudson, John Heffernan and Caitriona Balfe.
