‘Bad Teacher’ Is Being Adapted For TV – What Other Films Are Next?

There appears to be a new trend in Hollywood where popular films are being adapted for the small screen, by transitioning into primetime television. Back in March, Martin Scorsese announced he’d be teaming up with Miramax and GK Films to develop a TV series based off his Oscar-nominated feature, Gangs Of New York, concerning organized crime in New Orleans and Chicago at the turn of the 19th century, and now, CBS has just added Columbia Pictures’ Bad Teacher to that equation according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The new series, which will premiere as part of the network’s last minute 2013-14 fall programming, will be centered around Cameron Diaz’s role in the 2011 comedy, where Ari Graynor (Nick And Nora’s Infinite Playlist) stars as a “hot, confident, unapologetic former trophy wife Meredith Davis, who becomes a teacher to find a new man after her husband leaves her without a dime.”

With that in mind, I thought it’d be cool to compile a list of other popular flicks that should be made into weekly dramas and sit-coms, so here are 5 film adaptations that would make for interesting TV. Feel free to agree or disagree in the comments section below.

Dangerous Minds – In the 1995 drama, Michelle Pfeiffer applied for a teaching gig in an inner city school, where she dealt with underprivileged teens, which proved to be a compelling story. Actor/comedian Steve Harvey had a similar sit-com in ’96 on the WB but the plot would be different now that cyber-bullying is a growing issue in the new millenium. Besides, neither Dangerous Minds, or The Steve Harvey Show focused on life after grade school, so wouldn’t it be nice to see if any of Pfeiffer’s students in the movie attend college and find steady employment?

Legally Blonde – with law-inspired shows full of drama like TNT’s Franklin & Bash, and USA Network’s Suits, a playful comedy series from a female perspective detailing how Elle Woods overcomes obstacles as a woman trying to climb up the legal hierarchy, while dealing with the shenanigans of being an active member in her sorority would be nice. Think of it as a spin-off involving Casey Cartwright (Spencer Grammer) of ABC Family’s Greek continued.

Takers – a group of well-organized thieves of different ages make a living off of robbing art galleries; museums and safety deposit boxes, then launder the money into lucrative businesses, while trying to stay under the police. I know what you’re thinking: “we don’t need another crime thriller”, but this idea could be clever if it’s developed around USA Network’s White Collar and Paramount Pictures’ Pain & Gain.

This Is 40 – Paul Rudd & Leslie Mann could barely pay the mortgage and run their businesses while raising two children, dealing with their in-laws and trying to salvage their less-than-perfect marriage. Fast-forward to the ending and Mann announces she is pregnant with a third child. I don’t know about you, but I’d like to see what happens next.

Twilight – Ever wanted to know where vampires originated? Or how exactly does the werewolves imprint on someone? Programming like this could serve as a prelude to the book series, detailing other specifics such as how the treaty between the Cullens and The Blacks formed. If there’s an audience for Teen Wolfand Vampire Diaries, there can certainly be a demographic for Twilight fans.
