Antonio Banderas is planning to quit Hollywood following his split from Melanie Griffith and return to his native country to work on more European movie projects.
The star, who announced his split from American actress Griffith in June , wants to appear in more Spanish films and has sparked rumors he is turning his back on his adopted U.S.
Speaking during an appearance at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain, he told reporters, “I’m looking to come home and make movies here. Hollywood has ceased to exist as such, and now it is just a brand. I might have that brand on me my whole life, but I want to do more films from my own country. I recognize the talent here and I really believe in my people.
“It’s true that in Hollywood, I’ve always had certain limitations because of my accent or ethnicity. I go straight into certain roles. I’ve been working in Hollywood for 23 years with a certain handicap.”
Banderas has been married to Griffith for 18 years and they are parents to a teenage daughter named Stella. Griffith filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences for the breakdown of the marriage.
