‘Social Suicide’ Reunites Franco Zeffirelli’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’ Stars Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey
The stars of filmmaker Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 Shakespeare film classic Romeo & Juliet (you know, the one we all watched in high school) are reuniting to play the tragic heroine’s parents in a modern take on the romantic tragedy.
“Social Suicide is a thriller inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, centering on a police investigation of the murder-suicides of social-media-savvy teenagers. The police investigate the romance and tragedy through videos, vlogs and snapchats, but soon discover nothing is as it seems,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey haven’t acted together since they played the star-crossed lovers, and now they’re reteaming to play Lord and Lady Capulet in Bruce Webb’s new film Social Suicide.
The film will be all the more special for Hussey as her real-life daughter, actress India Eisley, best known for her roles as Ashley Juergens in The Secret Life of the American Teenager and Eve in Underworld: Awakening, will portray Julia, the latest incarnation of Juliet.
Production on the new film began in London on Tuesday.
